I am researching Halloween traditions and beliefs amongst young people in South Yorkshire for a dissertation. If you know of any new or unusual customs that you have seen in your district I would be very interested. Or I have a questionnaire that children can fill in at
http://shef.ac.uk/natcect/surveys/index.html
This is entirely anonymous and if you have family members in the 5-15 age group would you ask them to fill it in (or help them fill it in yourself).
If you can help in any way - thank you.

You'll get a better response if you take part in the rest of this forum, Berinda. We get lots of students who ask us questions then 'forget' to read the answers. It's wearing a bit thin. Members seem to be more forthcoming if you stick around.

Agreed there!

In fact is you try searches on the forum you will probably also find a thread that would be appropriate to tag onto and already has some thoughts!

Much better to have open discussion that a restricted questionnaire template don't you think?

Anyway, your link doesn't work :heyhey:

Thanks for the suggestions. I have searched through past discussions and have found many to which I shall contribute, but nothing on this subject.
Perhaps the link below re the questionnaire will work. I have just used my search engine and reached it easily at

http://shef.ac.uk/natcect/surveys/halloween/

I was brought up in Shire Green, which I understand is the true spelling - see Bryan Woodriff's book 'Shire Green, Wincobank and Ecclesfield', in the 1940s/1950s, but cannot recall any celebrating of this old Calendar Custom. It seems to have become re-popularised in this country in the late 1970s, early 1980s, and is now very popular.

I have read a lot about the 'Caking Neet' tradition that is still practised in Stannington, but any information is appreciated.

Actually, http://shef.ac.uk/ doesn't work either. Nor any path in between :suspect: Perhaps external access to the server is blocked at the moment? Are you at home, or using a shef.ac.uk computer?

I am working from my home computer. I rarely use the University ones.
This is puzzling as to test it I have sent it to family members via e-mail and they have filled it in and submitted it. The replies go to my shef.ac.uk webmail address.
A google search via AOL for 'Halloween Questionnaire' brings it up on a list, but where the problem is I don't know.
