seems like they have been given a huge amount of money and there spending it on whatever they like, hardly suprising when there isn't checks on these kinds of things?

They should ask the community what they wanted and instead spend it on that.

if it really was only 11% that wouldn't be too bad. but the reality is that they are spending at least 50% more than that, but get away with it by classifying what are clearly internal activities as 'projects' - which mean they dont count toward the M&A budget. Total con.

Shame the report doesnt ask about who is going to own all the New Deal funded buildings once New deal is gone, will it be the New Deal board itself?

Very true....
There is some suspicious back handers going on in that local authority.
I blame the Sheffield Council for employing idiots looking after the community and making a mockery of a good neighbourhood

Jobs for the boys, same old story. BNDfC Chief Exec. John Clarke allegedly gets paid (I hesitate to say 'earns') in the region of £100k per year. They've employed people on tasty salaries who seemingly have no idea what they are doing. The business plan for Sorby House on Spital Hill is apparently based on full occupancy at city centre rents - yet it's not city centre office accommodation. It's meant to make a profit, which is to be used to subsidise Vestry Hall. Which in turn is meant to be a learning centre, with access to courses run by Sheffield College. Although they haven't got round to sorting that out. They have got Learndirect lined up, but it seems that New Deal didn't know that Learndirect is being wound up in a year or two.

People complain about councils, but quangos like New Deal make councils look really good on value for money and financial monitoring.

Get your facts straight. New Deal for Communities is not the Council http://www.neighbourhood.gov.uk/page.asp?id=617

The Council would probably have done a better job.

Read carefully does it mention anything about New Deal in my post. I was talking about overall funding in Burngreave, Recreation, Jobs etc..... They deal with some of it. Still they do a bad job just like the Sheffield Council.

Well, it is a thread about New Deal. If you've got evidence that Council money is spent less effectively in Burngreave than the rest of Sheffield, you could (should) start a thread on it. Without putting SF at risk of legal action, obviously.

I understand all of the points you are making but for progress to occur in any situation there needs to be people to administrate it. What do you expect to happen, that £55 million pounds is put in the middle of a room and people help themselves to it willy nilly? Of course there needs to be people who read through the applications for funding, set up the courses that give people life skills which make them employable and deal with all the accounts etc.
I am not from Burngreave but I have met people who have benefited vastly from New Deal, people who have lost a child and are able to run support groups because of the funding they've been given and people who have been funded through courses that have made them employable.
£6 million may seem like a massive amount to the person on the street but the admin work forms the base of the pyramid, without administration happening none of the New Deal programmes could run and I'm sure no-one would want to miss out on all that New Deal has brought to Burngreave.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead....but I'm just interested to find out more about what TeaFan said....concerning Learndirect being wound up? Anyone know more about this? I've tried googling up some info but found nothing.

Thanks,

Matt
