View Full Version : Wednesday fans playing loyal fans card, bigger crowds etc...

I found myself gripped in a deep conversation today with a fan from the dark side of football which started really pleasantly until it got a bit deeper as it usually does with rival hearts and all that, We started with both teams form over the last couple of years and we both managed to get positives and negatives out of it all which was fair until stats got mention and actual positions and stuff, at this point the wednesday fan turned the conversation towards how wednesday have this amazing lotal crowd that happens to be better than outr as more turn out than ours weekin week out etc, which to be honest has been the normal reaction of a wednesday for some time with us playing the better football and things!!!!
So just to bring this seasons attendances into the lime-light, we have a better following than you at the minute even though we have been relegated and are in a league that has been all soooo familiar to us over the last decade, the stats are as following.

BLADES V OWLS

Highest Attendance this season

26,202 compared to wednesdays 22,131

Average Attendance This Seaon

25,055 compared to wednesdays 19,977

Total Attendances at home, both played 8

200,443 compared to wednesdays 159,814

Which I don't know about you, but it seems like we beat you hands down this season???, ok lets be fair for the sheffield derby i'm sure you will have loads of fans creep out of the woodwork and drag a 30,000+ attendance but one game does'nt make your fans better if thats the only game that they will go to all season!
And now we have a 32,600 capacity, I'm more than certain that we will pull 30,000+ to our derby match at BDTBL, but to be fair that would only be about 5 thousand more than what we are averaging anyway compared to yours which will be 10,000 more than this seasons average crowd!

Interesting point, Matt. Although you did fail to mention that United are INFINITELY scummier than Wedensday and as such, all the above is questionable.

Whilst what you have pointed out is true, you don't take in to account is the situation we both find ourselves in.

Wednesday have troubles on and off the pitch, whereas we just have troubles on the pitch.

Wednesday have had no hope of achieving anything for the last 8 years, whereas the Blades have had a few good cup runs and a brief stint in PL (yes I know the Owls where there 6 seasons since, but at this point their attendances were dwindling, and only improved once relegated)

But on a much more serious note, the Owls are ****. The Blades are fantastic ;)

And this time put some real money in. That IOU from last time wasn't worth much. You lot are considerably richer in money terms, but like the song says, "money can't buy you love", and nobody loves you. The Prem think you dragged the league through the mud, and are still doing so. The Championship couldn't stand the way you were going to have won the league by Christmas. Divisions 1 & 2 don't know you but would dislike you if they did. You'll soon be about as popular as Leeds and Millwall. But never mind, keep :)

I know several people who bought United season tickets after being promised half price tickets for the Premier League next season, the assumption being that their superb squad couldn't possibly fail to deliver automatic promotion.

Let's see how many they sell for another Championship season next year.

it's amazing how they so quickly forget life before the premiership - and the long long long long stuggle in lower divisions with smaller attendaces than the local rivals.

You take crap times on the chin and live with it... Im not hard core but i am proud.
United fans love the fact that they Were in the prem and rubbed it in our face, cos at the same time we were in the "crap'ole"..... but football is a funny old game aint it? like we never rubbed them up, when we went to the rumberlows cup final, had players like waddle, 40,000 at cardiff.... etc.... its called banta and for me its what makes SHEFFIELD FOOTBALL SPECIAL!

i was mistaken and said so - i didnt realise that gaining promotion earned anything to go in the Trophy cabinet. But you didn't actually WIN anything - you came second.

I honestly, don't think Laws is that bad, and he is a good manager for you, but he is there to steady the ship and won't be able to take you to that next mile.

It's necessarily a bad thing, if you can steady the ship for a few years and clip a few million off the debt it would help a hell of a lot. The interest must be the only thing crippling Wednesday. Rumour has it that Wednesday have to sell 9,000 season tickets just to cover interest payments for the year.

To be fair both teams have these woodwork fans, uniteds attendences were bolsted in the premier league because of the wednesday fans wanting to see premierleague football for once. U had fans going to see United's matches and now were both in same league they have come back to the Wednesday, not that its made any difference to our disappointing attendences lol ;)

could have saved me time from proving my point by putting that up earlier mate.

so its true you hav'nt averaged over 30,000 since 1968 and never done it in the premier.

and we had several crowds near and over 40,000 in the 70's whilst you were rattling your tins and asking us to dig deep like i said.

also did'nt the fa help to pay for your ground in 66 to get it up to scratch for the world cup.

in reality it's stupid to even consider the attendances in the '70', the crowds were just crammed in and left to get crushed.
it's not our fault that the club won't allow people to push in when the offical capacity isn't there.
talk about fleecing the public.

i've just checked the attendances and rightly so we never exceeded 30k int he premiership. although we did have several more years and not 1.
perhaps our fans knew they it wasn't going to be once only experience to see decent football.

Sounds like we are much of a muchness regarding our respective clubs as i started watching wednesday in 1974! The golden age of crapness!!! I still have a season ticket and travel to 3/4 of away games but you will also appreciate that you're in the same boat as the "praise or grumble" crowd, as in as much that you get a caller ringing in to voice their opinions on the days game until the DJ asks the killer question "Have you been to the game today?" to which the caller usually stumbles and says in a squawky voice "No, i've listened to it on't radio!" WTF!!! The point i'm making is that as much as you've been and still are an avid blade and to be congratulated for following your club through thick and thin, and i'm sure knowing what you know about football, you know you can't make an honest judgement about a game unless you've actually been there and seen it.

No offence like Billy but i was following them all over England when we were absolute ****e in the mid 70's.
I went the length and breadth of England when Jimmy Sirrell and Ken Furphy were managers and there was some right awful matches but CB was there week in and week out.
Remember Burnley away on a horrible tuesday night and we lost 3-1 and we got ran all over after the match.West ham same thing in the league cup when we lost 5-0.

Shame that you can't make this event CB
Blades 1982 Glory Dinner (http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Blades39-1982-glory-dinner.3503349.jp)

Particularly like this quote
"The class of 1981-82 will relive the glory moments of that season, which included a 19-game unbeaten run against those leviathans of modern football Hereford, Bury, Rochdale and Aldershot" (alright might have added that last bit :))

Sounds like it's right up your street celebrating 25 years since United's last piece of 'major' silverware the Division 4 Championship :D

Well least you can brag that it's one thing SWFC will never win!

could have saved me time from proving my point by putting that up earlier mate.

so its true you hav'nt averaged over 30,000 since 1968 and never done it in the premier.

I think 29,560 is not too far short! The fact is, the overall average attendances are in favour of the Owls from day one. As for 40k crowds, I've stood in over 40,000 several times in the 80's and 90's while the piggies looked on enviously in their deck chair shirts. Now the big anomaly....there seems to be 10,000+ gone missing from your concrete bunker since May ;)

So if you have always had the bigger crowds from day 1 and we are now getting 29,000 and missing 10,000 + as you say then that means there are more than 21,000 + missing from the needs a lick o paint sty because you seems to be drawing about 19,000 or so this season mate ;)

24,917 actually Canada Bloke :) (29,000!!!! over 25,000!) nuff said. My 10,000 deficit is because I've been a bit misled with the figures I've been supplied with from the rose tinted spectacle wearing people, who, probably know who they are but can't help themselves;) Plus, Canada, did you have look at this (http://www.btinternet.com/~a.drake/owls/misc/wedutdframe.htm) That says Wednesday have in general, been the better supported club. It maybe not in the last couple of years, or in your head and I know it must be difficult for you to understand , but that is how it is. Come back in 30 or so years with some new figures:love:

2006-07: 23,638
2005-06: 24,853
2004-05: 23,100
2003-04: 22,336

Now if some blades finds out what their average attendances have been then this can get laid to rest!

I think that if on average you take off the away support of say... 1500... we av 21000 as the Home support average!
still not bad for the crap we have had to put up with over the years...

so using my mathematical calculator...using these estimated calculations....

owls v blades... because of the season in the prem... the blades are the better supported side in sheffield....by an av of 3-4000 per match...without the prem wednesday are the better supported.... by an av 1500-2000 per game....

to sum things up id say this... sheffield is 50/50!
& The blades only come out when things are on the up!:P

if the blades ad 30,684 in the prem take the 5000 away support... av = 25000.

ah but a find a little flaw in your theory. united only had 2,800 seats for visitors in the bottom tier. you wendy lads give 8,000 visitors seats for all the away end. that puts our average home gates at 28,000 home fans.

If i remember rightly....you all bought your season tickets before you got relegated so come off it mate!! I've spoken to a lot of blades about this (even my old man and my uncles are blades) and majority agree that if united were in exactly the same position wednesday are in now you wouldn't be getting anywhere near 20 thou at home!

Let's be honest here. You have achieved a lot in recent years both off and on the pitch for a club your size, but i personally don't think to can touch the loyalty we have down at s6. It is something often commented on by both sets of fans. After all the lies, the let-downs, the turmoil and increased ticket prices on top of that, to still average 20k after our worst start in history is something to be proud of. rant over piglet

The Leppings Lane end total capacity is about 7,000. The West stand is the only section open because as a rule the away support very, very rarely exceeds the 3,500 it holds. Do you honestly think Colchester and the likes bring 8,000. Just goes to prove your inability to evaluate reason, methinks

was on about premier league attendances. when did you play colchester in the premiership.
i'm sure man utd, man city, newcastle, liverpool etc etc etc brought more to the sty than 3,500 in your premier days. but only brought 2,800 to the lane as tickets allocated. if we had room for 7,000 visitors then our average last season would have been around 35,000.

please try to keep up bud.

so for once in the Blunts history - they can actually show themselves in a positive light.
it's amazing how they so quickly forget life before the premiership - and the long long long long stuggle in lower divisions with smaller attendaces than the local rivals. You would do well to look at united and see how we turned the financial negatives into positives

Absolute numpty!

Wednesday have been at their lowest for YEARS!! The whole Dave Allen fiasco stopped thousands coming back to Hillsborough this season.
United on the other hand have JUST had a season in the prem, many of there season tickets were purchased BEFORE they knew they were going down and youre STILL only getting 4 thou more than us this season lol.
Look at the last time we were both in Championship mate. You got promoted, we nearly went down again and we still got more at home. Imagine if that had been the other way round. We went up and u finished 10points off relegation. I think the difference would be as much as 10 thousand pal.

I'd love blades to go through the decade we've just had...see where u are then! you wouldnt even be touching 15k matey.
