Could someone please tell me why my Bramley apples have brown spots inside some of them. They look perfectly healthy on the outside but when you cut into them there are brown spots in the flesh.

Its called bitter pit I think, and its some sort of disease caused by a calcium deficiency. The tree is short of lime, so dress under the tree with lime or calcified seaweed and take it in. The effects will take a year or more to show. The apples will probably taste awful with bitter pit, hence the name.

Just looked in one of my books, and it seems Bramley Seedling are prone to this. Apparently you can spray the fruits with calcium nitrate when they are developing if it happens regularly. But its obviously too late for this. Youre also supposed to make sure the trees dont over crop.

Thank you & I will do as you say.I think it could be the over cropping because every year we have a very good harvest of them.
