Please, someone, tell me this is a joke...

http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=4066011

"Conservatives today accused Labour of wasting more than £1 billion of taxpayers’ money on furnishing and decorating Government offices during their eight years in power.

The bill included £50,000 on plants and £82,000 for relocating a fitness suite at John Prescott’s Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as £40 million on furniture across nine departments, according to figures published in the Sunday Telegraph."

Makes me want to :gag:

£50000 on plants?? For one building? What kind of plants are they? For that price I'd want the entre contents of a greenhouse at Kew Gardens, or at least a forests worth of trees :D Someone must have seen him coming ;)

And your point is ? :suspect:

His personal property is not the issue.. Its our money he's wasting on flowers and office furniture :loopy: Jeez!

Makes you think about all these Civil Service job cuts ? Are they to make way for something useful ? Like a bunch of Carnations

:D Maybe he did his shopping here (http://www.homestore.com/HomeGarden/Gardening/Features/Plants/ExpensivePlants.asp?poe=homestore)
and had them shipped over :P

Or perhaps he got a job lot of these (http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/biologicalscience/story/0,9834,769934,00.html)

:P

This is fun :)

My point is that no wonder this Country is on a downward financial spiral when John "****** balls" Prescott forks out ridiculous amounts of money on stuff he doesn't really need.

I mean, 50 Grand on plants?! WTF?! :loopy:

Well at least he will have a nice forest to hide in when everyone comes looking for his guts for garters. Not sure he will camouflage very well though...

I take it he's relocated his fitness suite to the Pizza place just round the corner.

It was £50k for the whole department (6,500 people in offices around the country), not his private office.

That may be so, but that is still over £7.50 per person...

Remind me to get a job in one of his offices next time I am looking - I had to spend a whoping £1.50 buying my own plant from ikea to go on my desk.

Maybe he just doesn't have green fingers, so they need replacing often?

Most of the plants he's spent money on are working in those offices with him.

I would say that John is a Hydnophytum formicarium.

And Tony Blair is quite plainly - a weed.

If this story is true and it probably has some basis in fact then surely it would provide amazing television footage to haul the people responsible in front of a live audience and make them explain their actions and the reasoning behind their decision. It'll never happen because if it did we'd probably all discover what a bunch of money grabbing, my plant is bigger than your plant idiots we've got who profess to be serving our interests.

I don't see why they shouldn't spend some money on giving people a pleasant working environment, I bet the council spent more than 50K on plants and flowers for Sheffield city centre and council offices last year and I think it was money well spent.

I don't pay tax so that people in John Prescott's Office have a nice plant on their desk - they can bloomin' (sorry!) well buy their own like everyone else!!

As for the plants or Sheffield city centre - everyone who pays tax gets to enjoy these plants, whereas most of us are certainly never going to be invited to visit John's Chelsea Flower Show style office...
