I'm going on a stag do (not mine) to Amsterdam later this year. Yeah, yeah... I hear all the tut's and groan's... :P

Still, would appreciate any advice/recomendations for a place to stay, close to the centre.

There are a couple of Ibis hotels in Amsterdam. If you've ever stayed in one here you will probably know what to expect. Except they have Amstel in vending machines outside the rooms :)

Its quite a while since I've been but I'm pretty sure this is the one I stayed at (there are 4 and I'm not entirely sure):

If it is the same one it was pretty good. Probably around 4 star standard. Clean, has bar, serves snacky type food and coffee, has internet access, etc.

Thanks for that Punk. The Ibis looks like the sort of thing we are after.

Amsterdam is a great city, much better than that other stag do favourite - Blackpool.

I would recommend getting something cheap like an Ibis, as you probably won't even see your hotel room, you are allowed to stay out all night in Amsterdam, like adults should be.

In 1999, we stayed in Amsteram in a hotel on a boat called..........The Botel!!

Can't remember a thing about except it was cheap, and it was a hotel on a boat.

Just remebered (the fog lifts......) it was near the train station.

We usually find a place when we get there - although if you are going sometime around summer you'll have a problem at the weekend finding space unless you're out for 7am looking. Otherwise it's just a case of walking down the Damrak (main road outside station) for 10-15 minutes until you get away from the tiny hotels to the decent ones further away - around Leidseplein. Get a map when you get there and you'll know what I'm on about :) It's also within stumbling distance of the areas you'll be visiting :D

I went to Amsterdam in August last year, stayed at the Bulldog hotel, they have a website - www.bulldog.nl - if you want to check it out! It's in the red light district but don't let that put you off just turn right not left when leaving the hotel and you'll be alright.

I have been loads and never had a problem with hotels. Just make sure you get one close to the City Centre or else you have to travel in and out (happened to me once). Good company can be found by following this link - they claim to be cheap too. http://www.newcastleairportfan.co.uk/worldwidehotels.html
