View Full Version : My tap water tastes funny
There is a slight chemical/battery taste to my tap water :gag:
Have told the landlord but I'm not overly confident that he will investigate anytime soon (earlier this year my shower kept blocking up and he actually suggested it was because I was standing on the plug hole [obviously the tile grout in the drains was just coincidence]).
I live between Millhouses and Nether Edge. Is anyone else in this area having the same problem? Any idea what the cause could be?
Are you certain it's mains and not tanked water? Can you investigate?
Saying that the water in the toilets in Moorfoot was a rather odd orangy brown colour!

Our tapwater here in Walkley was brown the other evening, but that seems to happen every now and again...:)
Have you tried running teh water for a while?
If the metallic taste goes after running the water then it may be you have metal pipes and the water 'standing' in tehm overnight is picking up metal.
If the taste persists, your water may be tanked - are you in a flat?
Joe
Perhaps a quick phonecall to your water supplier would answer the question? They should know if there's been any work in the area, or offer advice about investigating further.
dishwasher 29-01-2005, 21:07 It could be the chlorine they put in to purify it.
One option is to run some off into a suitable container and put it in the fridge for a couple of hours. The chlorine goes and the water becomes nice and cool.
We used to get discoloured water quite often, brown bits etc, and when we complained to Yorkshire Water - who I have found are more than willing to listen to all opinions and have a great customer services department - almost always seemed to give us the same expalnation (excuse).
Believe it or not, they said it was something to do with fire engines using mains water!
It's an explanation you can't really argue with, but I've no idea if it's correct or not.

Not enough whiskey!
XxGemmaxX 29-01-2005, 21:35 Hi! My mum has noticed something funny about the water from the tap, she says it smells a bit like bleach!! i dunno whether it's just her mind or whether it really does! Maybe we're all drinking bleach and we dont even realise it. My advice is to buy bottled water from now on and drink that instead if you're in any doubt about that tap water
The bleach smell is the chlorine its pretty common. I notice it particularly when I go to my parents' down south as the water where I am here doesn't smell too strongly of it.
Phanerothyme 29-01-2005, 22:39 chlorine in tap water, if it worries you, evaporates quite quickly. Leave a jug of water to stand for an hour and most of hit will have gone.
Sometimes work on waterpipes causes sediment in the pipes to dislodge which can cause discolouration and a funny taste.
If this happens, call the water co in question, and tell them you will be billing them for bottled mineral water until the problem clears up. They will readily agree, providing you inform them before the fact.
I got this once in a previous house, and it turned out that the main stop tap (where the water first comes into the house) was not fully switched on. Apparently this causes sediment to build up which occasionally comes loose and turns the water brown. Turning it fully on cured the problem.

Speaking of which, they're digging up Hucklow Road on the approach to Firth Park roundabout.
Again
sheffgrow 10-01-2011, 21:50 i know this thread is 5/6 years old but today have noticed the same ie: the water tastes funny and smells bleachy, has anybody else had the same?
Rupert_Baehr 10-01-2011, 21:54 Perhaps your tapwater is 5 years old?
Do you really think there's a connection?
When I run a bath I can always smell the chlorine in it. I never drink tap water. We have one of those water purifyer thingyme-wotsits and I buy bottled water to keep in the fridge. We live in S14.

Yeah I have sheffgrow. I mentioned it to a friend of mine who is a plumber. He said that due to the huge amount of bursts that we have had during the cold snap, an unusual amount of chemical has been added to the water supply during repair and cleansing. His words not mine.

I found this ad whilst googling cos my water has also developed an unusual bleachy taste the last week or so. It's also incredibly cloudy (to the extent that you can't see through it) unless I run the tap for 10-15 seconds before I pour a glass.
Makes sense about the chemicals been added. I might email Yorkshire Water to see if there's any truth in this, or any other explanation they can offer.

empirical 11-01-2011, 08:42 You can always request a water quality report from yorkshire water if you are in any doubts to the safety of your drinking water but.... i doubt their honesty because when i requested a quality report after having very strong chlorine smells in my water here in hunters bar they sent me a quality report for the manor which would have been great if i lived at that side of town!!!

I used to love that saying :hihi::hihi:
neeeeeeeeeek 11-01-2011, 09:03 They will have upped the chlorine levels a bit, they did it last year. You can also smell it when having a shower. Pour it into a jug and let it stand for a few hours and it should improve.
Just don't drink the stuff unless it has been boiled first, you never know what crap they are putting in it.
I drink 2Ltrs per day, bottled.
My water still comes through lead pipes so I'm not taking any chances.

The cloudiness is likely to be tiny oxygen bubbles. If you have a glass of cloudy water it will clear from the bottom up in a minute or less.

Must be something wrong with your supply! Mines tastes just as water should and always has :)
phatkontrola 16-01-2011, 16:52 No evidence bottled water is any better/cleaner than tap! A few impurities are alright anyway, what doesn't kill you etc...
