View Full Version : Jabu (Chinese dumplings & fondue)
Went out for a Chinese fondue meal (I have to admit that until yesterday I thought fondue meant cheese or possibly chocolate  ) yesterday with friends & had such a good meal I thought it was worth mentioning on here.
Jabu (formally Cafe Malibu) on London Road (just along from the noodle bar) has only been open about a month so it's not listed anywhere (that I could find) yet.
The food was excellent & the staff were very helpful (friendly too, speaking Chinese to one of our group who'd lived & worked in China) They took time to explain the menu (there's a fantastic selection of vegetables, meat & seafood) & cooking times.
Well worth a visit :)
Sandra Spice 30-01-2005, 16:55 You haven't got a phone no have you? I fancy taking a gang down to try this?
Yeah I have seent his place and though whats it like.
Can you let us know what you had and the prices etc etc
Thanks
I don't have a number ( I didn't book it ) but I'll do my best to find out.
Price depend on how many dishes you order - each dish varies in price from 1.50 (for veg etc) right through to £6 for fresh crab. I'd allow £20 per head if you want to eat yourself silly - less if your eyes aren't bigger than stomach :)
They don't have a license for alcohol so you'll need to bring your own.
theflyingfish 31-01-2005, 09:07 I read in exposed that there was a new chinese opening on London road owned by the people whoi own wasabisabi. Unforetunately I lost the magazine and I don't have anyomre details. Does anyone know if it is open yet, and what it is called, and better still, if it is any good?
I haven't noticed any new restaurants on London Road since the Thai place that used to be Wabowskis (or whatever it was called) opened.
mjlacey21 31-01-2005, 10:09 the newest one i know on london road is the fondue and dumpling house that I think is about opposite the Cremorne but i haven't tried it.

Ah, yes, that realy little place, that is new, I haven't been yet.
That's Jabu - I started a thread about this here :
Jabu (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27737)
Any chance of threads being merged?
OK - the phone number is 0114 258 3200
& to answer your question about what we had Mikey there was a huge selection. We started with dumplings (although sharing a dish of those is probably a good idea as the portions are quite large)
For the fondue we had a selection of different meats (can't vouch for those as I don't eat meat but they went down well with the friends I was with), vegetables (like chinese root, water chestnuts, chinese spinach, funghi etc) tofu, bean curd , tiger prawns, mussels, crab. There was a much wider selection than this though.
All the food tasted very fresh & the staff were really helpful when it came to choosing what to have.

Thanks. The article said that it was going to be quite upmarket and sort of contemporary modern - is this the same place then?
ive been to jagu the chinse and dumping house. is really goo fun and different type of food. Not bad for price either. I wouldnt say it was upmarket though, like a cafe syle more than a resturant.
hiya, ive been there too. Jagu is fab and fun for a meal. Its so different ive never had anything like it.
Ousetunes 31-01-2005, 15:21 They have a feature in this month's (February) Profile magazine which finds its way through our post every month.

I'll change the name on my posts - in my defence I was told it was Jabu I didn't look that closely

You have a point but according to a friend who lived & worked in China for a year it's very authentic chinese food :)
Moderator Note
London Road Chinese thread merged with this one.

msbehavin 31-01-2005, 16:01 are the dumplings similar to the ones traditionally served with stew in English cooking?? Love those - in fact mouth is watering as i speak (type!):P
No - as far as I know they aren't made with suet ;) They're traditional chinese ones ( boiled not fried) they have a filling (veg or meat)
They're a bit like the ones you get in wonton soup I'd say but bigger & not in the soup :P
v yummy (my mouth is watering too now!)

The article was talking about a new chinese restaurant which will be called Mao, and opens in March - see City magazine for more info (Jan and Feb issue), and yes, it's the guys behind WasabiSabi.
Think The Pin Up Club residents will be playing at the launch party........ ;)
Can't wait.

Yes, that's it! Not open yet then, damn. Well maybe I will try Jagu this week. is it best to make a reservation for a saturday night?
msbehavin 02-02-2005, 12:29 I went to Jabu yesterday for lunch with a friend of mine and it was superb.
The staff were friendly and the waitress absolutely superb. We had personal attention from start to finish - saying this the place was very quiet - however she took the time to explain everything to us, brought us complimentary chinese tea whilst we were deciding what to have and even suggested things that she thought we might enjoy without going to the expense (she said) of ordering things we may not like. The fondue thing was great fun (if a little messy with my poor attempts at using chopsticks!) and i enjoyed the whole event so much i am thinking of going there with a party of friends for my birthday at the end of this month.
They aren't licensed but you can take wine and they charge £1.50 corkage.
Complimentary mints were brought at the end of the meal, along with two lucky charm souvenirs to celebrate the Chinese New Year (the rooster if anyone is interested!)
Recommend this place thoroughly for good, fresh food, excellent friendly service and something that bit different to the usual. Go before it starts getting busy! ;)
I think it's great that this part of London Road seems to becoming Sheffield's own Chinatown... I think this should be encouraged! Mmmmm, Chinese food...
Wow, sounds good. I love chinese food and have exhausted every chinese restaurant in town. This is a must I feel, will have to get some people down sometime.

it's on the corner next to the cremone pub. should bring a much needed 'up-market/cool' edge to london road and with the backing from wasabisabi, it should be a place to look out for!
hmm ive yet to try this place, since i just live on one of the side roads from london road :)

the place is called Mao... its opening at the end of this month. its going to be a contemporary chinese restaurant where 'The Menu' used to be, next to the chinese supermarket.
Guest_225 20-05-2005, 18:35 Went to Jabu last night after reading the reviews here and it was fabulous. Great food and a fun way to eat since you cook it yourself in the boiling bowl of soup. The service was beyond the call of duty too, with the waitress explaining everything and even starting us off by showing us how once the food arrived.
The bill was a surprise too - only £44 for the three of us :)
I would recommend this place to anyone bored of the usual style of restaurants.
Just one other thing - they only have five tables so best book although I suppose there's no shortage of other places to eat on London Road.

I'm going there tonight, the landlady had closed for a while to go back to Malaysia but she's staying after all.
Friends I'm going with tonight have been going to Jabu for years and I can't wait! I've not looked at menus on-line to keep the surprise!

i dont think you can fail to like this place....enjoy! :D
last time me and my mates went we got told by the waitress (in true chinese style) that they thought we had ordered to much....well, we showed her.
the only problem was we had to be rolled out the front door a bit like violet beauregarde afterwards! :hihi:

jennie2102 19-02-2010, 19:58 can anyone point me in the direction of the menus online?

its not like a regular chinese where you order dishes.
first you order your dumplings, which are a bit like a starter.
for your main course you order the broth you want to cook your food in. there is spicy and non-spicy...in quite a few variations.
then you select what you would like to cook be it vegetables, meats, fish, noodles, tofu.
everything is brought to the table and you cook it as you want to eat it in the hotpot dish.
hope this helps.
