View Full Version : The hanover - a good pub
dishwasher 28-01-2005, 21:07 does anybody remember when the hanover pub in broomhall was a really decent boozer, back in the early 1980s?
It used to get packed every night, with all different sorts of people.
It served Stones, the lonadlord was an oldish guy called Fred who had an alsatian dog.
I used to live close by and had some amazing nights in there.
What's it like now?
My best buddy used to serve behind the bar during the late 90's and very early 00's. I liked the place - and soon got used to the Yardie guys who hung about outside.
muddycoffee 29-01-2005, 19:11 I went in the hanover 18 months ago and it had a lot of disabled people, who live in the special housing nearby. The place looked a little run down. And the other side was almost empty. There was no trouble. The beer was ok. I haven't been in since, but only because I don't live near. It is a good stopping of point if you are heading from west street area to Classic Rock Bar, Vine or Ecclesall road area in general.
It has gone downhill in the past 3 years. The new landlord and his unfeasibly young wife have tacked a load of Elvis era car-boot tat onto the walls. The Karaoke is laughable and the clientele can be rough ("wanna buy a video?"). Beer prices have risen sharply too.
In its favour the drinking hours are "relaxed", it has a community feel and it looks after it's disabled customers well.
I was going twice a week, but have stopped until it gets a bit more culture: daily papers, games, quiz, open mic, decent jukebox not the landlord's 60s tapes, bands etc.
muddycoffee 17-02-2005, 11:07 Well funnily enough, I was in there for a quick pint this week after a meal in town and walking back down to the Classic Rock Bar. And I agree with every word you say Norbert. Wasn't aware the young girl was the Landlord's wife.
Was quite amused with the state of the old fellow though, middle aged chap who has let himself go completely and has an extremely rough voice like he smoked 200 fags every day. I suspect that he's not as old as he seems though. Maybe an extremely rough 30 year old
Kthebean 17-02-2005, 12:41 I live just round the corner from the hanover, and had never been there before 2 days ago, when I stopped in for a pint on the way to costcutters. Bar staff were friendly and had a nice pint of clarks (i think it was called that anyway). Food is cheap.
yeah the food is cheap and the portions generous. there's far worse boozers to live round the corner from for sure.
I was living in the area in the mid 80s.4 and it was a fairly lively place. Basically the Hanover never recovered from when it was under the tyrannical reign of some nut called Les, who barred all the regulars the OP will remember. There was even a 'Hanover Boycott' balloon on display at I think the '86 Broomhall Festival. Total headcase.
Highnote 23-02-2005, 10:42 To go really further back,up to 1964 I lived a few doors away from the "Hanover",the beer was from Hewitts a Grimsby Brewery I think, and for many years before and during the war it was only a six day licence,it did not open on Sundays, and was know as the six day house.
Does anybody remember Chris Baker the landlord late 80s big bloke shaved head
courtneychar 23-02-2005, 23:24 my dads bro used to be the landlord ther murphy it was a gd pub then not been bk me when murphey left
'Does anybody remember Chris Baker the landlord late 80s big bloke shaved head'
Fink so. In fact, he barred me for breaking too many glasses. Is it that guy that used to have the Mesters before...?
I heard he died...only 39.
That's right Solero, he did have the mesters before the Hanover and from there he went to a pub opposite the RSPCA think they called it Queens Hart or something similar, he was a real character, yes he died aged 39.
Wouldn't want to speak ill of the guy when he can't defend himself, but he hated me for some reason. First time I'd ever been barred from anywhere (though not the last).
I really wouldn't want to slag the present landlord off too much. I'm not kidding, the food is good, and good value. I think he's at least making a bit of an effort which no - one else has bothered to do for years.
art_blaze 12-06-2011, 12:51 I had my birthday party there after a recommendation re new landlord and his cooking. Trevor the landlord is new as is the decor, carpets etc. The pub is great as are the staff. Trevor cooks the most amazing curries and party food. I'm going to be a regular visitor as I work in town and can drop by after work. So thank you Trevor for a lovely party.
stewpot54 12-06-2011, 16:54 Is it mainly a gay bar now or has it a good mix.

jennydepp 10-07-2011, 17:05 y dad was a regular in there years ago when he lived in the area His name was Charlie Hutchinson and he was jamaican, he moved to the upperthorpe aIrea until his death in 2007 does anyone remember him I went in there a few times myself a few years ago when mandy had it stopped goin in though when some idiots off the estate put all the windows through because of some gang feud other than that i found it a very cosy little pub with some lovely people in
yeah heard its a gay curry house now
Bectorious 13-10-2011, 18:42 I love this pub - I am 30 years old and have been drinking in this pub for years - it is a great local pub and everyone is friendly and like to have a good laugh, the current owners are really great and put on the best buffet's in the world!! Don't knock it til you've tried it!!
Excellent pub.
Me and a friend went in last saturday and had a brill night.
The customers are welcoming and friendly, and yes the landlord put on a curry buffy which was out of this world.
The music was really good too. It made a change to walk into a pub which wasn't playing the top 40 or various dance tunes. Instead it was Northern Soul, Motown, and 60's. Very refreshing. Hope to go there again in a few weeks time.
