View Full Version : Did anyone see dispatches last night? - Road pricing was on
mr_busdriver 13-11-2007, 21:18 OK
we had 4 numptys, and they were each asked to drive around for a while. Near the end of the programme they were given their anual road pricing bills.
Mr van driver who drives 73,000 miles per year, would only pay £600 per annum.
Mrs drop the kids off at school, followed by a drive to work.... only pays £113 per annum.
Where do they get these figures from? £600 per annum for a van driver, do the experts think we are thick?

So what, according to your superior calculations, should be the correct figures using the criteria that were used on the programme? (You obviously have them, otherwise this thread is meaningless.)
jl-heating 13-11-2007, 22:02 i think the op is just stating how they try and make out a van driver sitting in his van all day will pay 600 per annum .. when we all know it will be 3 times that and when brought in will double every year spiralling out of control .. and once in we can do nothing. . :(
mr_busdriver 13-11-2007, 22:04 There talking about travelling on a Motorway costing up to £1 plus per mile, down to 2p a mile if you travel on a country road at 3am in the morning.
Now unless Mr Van Driver is only planning to drive 600 miles per annun, theres no way he will be paying only £600 per year....
Unless of course, the gullible public will fall for road pricing....
They won't, will they?

Only 3 times that amount? thats putting it lightly
Lets say, for argument that the average road will cost 20p per mile (and thats being very lenient) and an someone drives 8000 miles per annun (which isn't many miles)
8000 devide by 20p = £1600 per annun
Mr Van driver at 73,000 miles per annum will pay £14,600 (provide the cost of road pricing is an average of 20p per mile)
Even if the cost was a mere 1p per mile he'd pay £730.
jl-heating 13-11-2007, 22:16 gulp... does this mean mr brown can have a bigger car ?? and more living allowances ?

How do you know? That's a pretty impressive string of *facts* happening in the future you have there. Unless you can prove what you claim to be facts even though none of it's happened yet (that's some skill, by the way) you cannot claim to 'know' anything.
Do you know how many years the London congestion charge (for instance) has been running? Now tell me how many times the price has 'doubled'?
In fact, can you link to anything that has doubled in price every year? It's the sort of thing that needs discussing, but with your (and the OP's) calibre of reasoning and 'knowledge' no-one is going to pay any attention to any point you might be trying to make.
mr_busdriver 13-11-2007, 22:27 He will have more of our taxes if people fall for these figures.
But that will never happen will it? the general public has never been more intelligent?
They won't believe that 20p per mile (1.34 per mile if going on a motorway in rush hour) comes up with £600 per annum will they?

It has for 4x4 drivers, up to £25 per day.
At least it gets the low paid off the roads, so it can't be that bad.

obviously i know nothing .. ?? surley the point of a forum is to start a discussion and aire your personal views .. just because some one starts a topic does not mean he knows the full story he is just starting a fresh thread. i personally think it has content and will get lots of views and comments.i dont profess to know everything but i like to think i am above average in intelligence, as to your reply i wonder which side of the bed you got out of today .. and can i recommend the other side tomorrow.

This is the problem with Government Spin Machines. Threaten £1 a mile then be grateful when it 'only' comes in at 15p. Of course, Stage 2/3/4 is to increase it up to 50p but shhhh!
Just watch what Livingstone's trying to do in London, and use it as the model for everywhere else. That's all that central and local government will do and if he can get away with it in London then the rest of the country will follow suit soon enough.
Presumably the van drivers bill was supposed to be lower than you'd expect because he's doing a lot of miles out of the rush hour and/or out of town.
Whereas the mother is driving twice a day in rush hour and that's it.
KJ_VENOM 14-11-2007, 06:57 If road pricing will put an end to road tax and lower the duty on fuel then it maybe worth while, but lets face it those in power will just make it a new tax on drivers more money for the coffers of the exchequer
