I worked as an Environmental Health Officer on the Games Village and my husband worked security there. I was also involved in the Closing Ceremony as well as being a Cultural Ataché for the Sheffield Festival which was running at the same time. My job was to look after and escort a group of Israeli dancers around various venues to perform. They were due to perform at the Games Village one day but refused as the crowd wasn't big enough (!) and the only way I could persuade them was to tell them that the camera crew there were from the BBC! I wasn't going to burst their drama bubble by telling them it was Look North filming but either way, it worked :hihi:

I worked as a security guard during the construction phase of Don Valley Stadium for alocal firm Constant Security. At the time the city was on its knees with the closing of the steelworks and the mines. My boss brought potential from all over the north and midalnds to the site to show them how sheffield was rebuilding itself, he went on about how the organisers of the worls Student games were committed to using local firms to run the games and how good it would be for the local economy.

The stadium got built, with no losses due to theft or vandalism and we were looking forward to providing our services to the games themselves, what happened? we got the sack and they brought a firm in from Manchester to do it.

Sheffield Council how wonderful you are. I for one will never forgive those who made the games such an emabarrasment. They know who they are.

Oh yes, the turquoise uniforms and the pagers beeping in the middle of night for us to go and meet our delegations. I am sure, our driver, Paul will remember the lack of sleep.:|
I worked as Chef de Mission attaché and had a wonderful time. Any one here worked as team attaché or chef de mission attaché?

I was a Cultural Attaché which was in the main fun - and I had to put up with an armed bodyguard too!! He was lovely though, looked a bit like an Israeli Saddam Hussein and didn't speak that much English but I'm sure he went home knowing more than he arrived with - especially after the lecture I gave them all for doing a runner through Sheffield when we were trying to get them to Albion House to be accredited  They wanted to go and see their team play basketball at Ponds Forge so legged it out of the emergency door of the coach we had them on........ in rush-hour traffic!!!

I was a 'buffer girl' in the display at the start of the games, worked as a runner (collating scores etc) during the games and then took part in the closing ceremony. Wonderful time (despite the debt!)

What were the exact dates of the World Student Games? My son was born around the time they were on.

I took part too! I handed out medals to the mens hockey, and volleyball winners I think. I remember wearing a very fetching scarf which I think I still have somewhere. I can't believe it was that long ago!

Hi there,

I have tried everywhere but it seems that the one place to get hold of the recording of both the opening and closing ceremony is Sheffield Library where they kept a copy of the video tape that was sold at the time.

You have to physically go there and borrow it, being in France, I did not get a chance yet to go to Sheffield but just in case you are closer, let us know :)

Have you tried the Sheffield Star or the BBC ? - they archive photos and video footage of local events.
