View Full Version : Front facing speed cameras that flash

Are these illegal?

I don't want people responding with "You shouldn't be speeding then" - Just don't reply if you haven't got a constructive response.

I was flashed yesterday coming back from Rotherham towards M1 Jn35. It was a front facing speed camera.

I've been searching the net but all I can find is front facing speed cameras are called Truvelos and these don't flash, they use infrared. Gatso's which do flash are meant to be rear facing.

Anyone got any information on this?

EDIT: The speed camera there is apparently a Truvelo according to this website (http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/database/YSY/ysy058.htm), but if it is, then why did it flash (and temporarily blind!!!) me?

you probably crossed the white into the other lane.i've been flashed innumerable times head on in this situation and never got a ticket yet.
thats the only circumstance i can think of when it does happen.

I pray that I'll be as lucky. It's only 30 for about 300 yards and then all 40. I've been through it hundreds of times but for some reason yesterday I was a bit of an empty vessel (on auto-pilot if you like)... Probably because I was on my way back from losing a fair bit of blood during the 3.5 hour of tattoo time I had!

I think I was doing mid 30's but slammed on just before the line, but still got flashed.

Update - Got my NIP through as I suspected, doing 36 in a 30. I've heard about people that get offered to go on a speed awareness course/workshop instead of taking points, has anyone been offered to do this?

Not me personally but a mate of my dads just did one, he had to go to Newcastle for it and basically apologise and grovell for a few hours.

I wonder if there's a way I can hint at them to offer me the speed awareness thing.

I'd go to Newcastle (excuse for a night out) if it meant avoiding 3 points.

That's my second SP30 and it's sickening to know that both times were on roads I know like the back of my hand!!!

You clearly don't, if you think 36 is within the limit. If you know it's over the limit and don't care, then you deserve everything you get.

As for "constructive response" - there is only one possible constructive response, which is the one helping you to avoid such incidents in the future. Which is - don't break the law.

Me dad got caught and he did the course, but he was I think 33mph.

Don't think you can do the course with 36.

That's usually the case - they're roads you know and so you slip on to autopilot.

You tend to be much more careful on unknown roads - thsi is why a lot of accidents happen close to home - familiarity does indeed breed contempt.

Have you points already?

I'd rather get the points on my licence than grovel

But then I wouldn't be stupid enough to speed in the first place

May I add my tuppence to this conversation - Although I'm good, I don't consider myself to be superhuman, yet I can gauge what speed I am doing to within +/- 1 mph without looking at the speedo. This is called experience. It also helps that I have a professional PCV driving licence (clean).
Any good driver doesn't stare at anything, nor does he/she fix their eyes on the road ahead. He/she makes positive movements with their head and eyes to observe their surroundings, including the road ahead, the nearside, the offside, behind the vehicle and the dashboard to check for speed and warning symbols.
If you're not experienced enough to gauge your speed without looking at the speedo, heir on the side of caution and slow down.
All car drivers seem interested in these days is speed and getting there yesterday (that's when they aren't on the phone).Wow – some party trick – we’ll have to blank off your speedo some time so only the passenger can see it and go out for a drive – first time you’re out by more than 1mph, you pay up.

Back to reasonable claims. I didn’t say people should stare ahead, I said remain aware of dangers – and that strangely enough means that we need to be more aware of what’s ahead of us than what’s inside our vehicle – unless you care to disagree with that as well?

As it happens I’ve been driving for 25 years, have a clean licence, had a race licence for some years, and cover 30,000 miles a year safely. I, like you, can judge my speed relatively closely (though I’m not silly enough to claim within 1mph) from inputs like engine tone and road noise, but there are millions of less experienced drivers out there who cannot, and a whole lot of them struggle with the basics.

Keep to the point of the thread please chaps - and let's not resort to personal insults.

So everyone who speeds is stupid then? No exceptions? And when points mean prizes (ie bans) or at the very least a hike in your insurance payouts trust me you would swallow your pride and grovel. You dont have to mean it, just do the Shrek 2 puss in boots eyes

back on topic, I think Ive seen one of those forward facing ones flash a purpleish colour but I dont know if it was light reflecting off it or what, but it did look like a flash.

Say you did slip up and you got caught out, you would rather have the points that admit you were wrong, apologise and then look at the possible consequences of your actions.
Isn't that a little like cutting off your nose to spite your face?

If I was in the wrong, then of course I'd apologise - but I'm not grovelling for anyone. If I deserved the points on my licence, then I'd accept them gracefully - I wouldn't beg so as not to get them.

Perhaps automatic spiked that pop up in the road would be better for speeders.

Me too but as I posted above would they ever bother to try and track you? Like to see the approximate time then check cctv in the area and get your plate? Or am I just paranoid...

The authorities love bit of grovelling.
It costs you nothing AND gets you off the hook and makes them feel important that they've made you see the errror of your ways.
Another tick in their achievment box.
Well worth it.

If you are on a bike and you keep speeding at a certain location they will come and fined you.. as they have before

Grovelling costs nothing, but the course does. The same amount as the fine. :o

As mentioned, my Dad did it, (personally I was shocked at him getting 33 mph- I can only assume he was going downhill, and some kids were pushing it:hihi:) but there wasn't any grovelling. He said they just showed pictures of death and crashes etc. Gave them some statistics, and sent them on their way with a keyring (quite a nice one too:))

So can you say, hand on heart, that you have never exceeded a speed limit by so much as a fraction of one mile per hour at any time, ever, in any speed limit zone?

If not, what speed do you drive at in a 30 limit?

GazB. If you mean Wortley Road at Thorpe Hesley, it's a nightmare spot for speed traps. They also have unmarked vehicles at the side of the road, recording speeds of passing vehicles.

Of course I dont know you one Iota Starsparkle, there are only a couple of people on here who I actually 'know.' Im just saying if it comes to the crunch and you can go on one of these courses to avoid points and a fine, why wouldnt you? And another thing, these courses exist in order to inprove ones driving skills and make you a safer driver. Do you not think its a bit arrogant to be offered one and turn it down?

And since you clearly dont know me one iota as well, I'd like the respect of not having comments such as 'not everyone lives their lives by your standards' thrown at me. Thank you

Sorry if this is a bit late, but I did the spped awareness course. I was cought doing 33 in a 30 limit. I was told that that 31 & 32 would be ignored, that 33 & 34 would be offered the course and 35+ would automatically be prosecuted.

There was no grovelling or appologising involved! The course cost me the same as a fine but that was all. Those who led the course were great and were completely non-judgemental throughout. They started from the basis that we all do it but we were just unfortunate to get caught.

It was a three-hour session with 15 folk on it. They run these courses every morning and afternoon (except weekends) so you can imagine (a) how many are cought doing 32 or 33 mph and (b) how much money they raise at £75 per time

Overall, I do feel I benefited by doing the course and am now more aware of the dangers of speeding etc - and I still have my clean licence!

Hi Nigel.

Yes that's the one - Went back past it on Saturday, there was a mobile speed van next to the bowling alley. And the camera that flashed me was facing the opposite direction - typical!

Might be worth your while getting one of satellite gadgets that has every camera in the country stored on its data base and beeps when you get within 300 yards of one.
You still have to watch out for the mobile ones though.
