View Full Version : Teachers, Owler Brook & Whiteways 1980-1989, where are you now?
Owler Brook 1980 - 84 Does anyone remember:
Mrs Pearson,
Mrs Duff.
Mrs Gillard.
Whitways Middle School 1985 - 1989:
Mrs Johnson, Mr Bond, Miss Gabriel, Mr Summerhayes
Mr Dyson, Mr Carter, Mrs Kitchen, Miss Fowl/er ?
Mr Sinclair ( Deputy Head ), Mr Wilkins ( Headteacher ).
Where are you now!! if you're reading this please post and let me know how you all are!!
Gleighton 28-01-2005, 21:03 I remember Mr. Dyson. Was he still there as late as that? I left Whiteways about 1973 ish and he was there then. Yeah what ever happened to Him.
Mr Dyson was one of the favourite teachers at the school, like Mr Summerhayes and Miss Gabriel. Always up for a laugh.
When I was there he had the classroom you had to get to through the main hall.
Is there anyone else on the forum who went to Whiteways Middle School?
Remember the talent shows, the quad gardens, sledging down the big hill at the side in the snow, the big mural on the hall wall and most famousley the 'Sheffield Flood' play which even went to the Crucible!.
Gleighton 03-03-2005, 14:54 I went to Whiteways school.Early 70's I think. It all seems ages ago. I remember Mr. Bently, Mr Dyson. I was in the school rounders team that won the sheffield knock out cup[still got the photo's!] was the 1st year to go to Whiteways when it opened.
I left Whiteways around 1978.
My teachers were :
1st year - Mrs. Hairsighn
2nd year - Mr. Dyson
3rd year - Mrs. Finbow
4th year - Mr. Gingaly
Do all teachers have strange names?
What about the 'Cycling proficiency week'!! when we were all allowed to take our bikes to school - how cool was that, we all used to race down Whiteways hill onto Earl Marshal sports field to get home . . . just in time for 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold' or 'He-man'.
Come on . . theres got to be more people on this forum that went to Whiteways or Owler Brook - where are you all!!:P
Gleighton 18-05-2005, 14:27 I was in the Whiteways School rounders team that won the Sheffield rounders knockout cup. I was very proud. We had to play all the junior school in Sheffield in heats over one day and we knocked them all out and got the cup. Can't remember what year though. I still have the picture of the team and can just about remember everybody's names. I was in the Badminton team as well. Mrs. Glenndenning was in charge of the rounders and Mr. Sandiland was in charge of the badminton.
Ahhh such great memories. 76 to 80.
Mr Carter,, Miss Fowl/er ? I'm sure they got married.
Mr Sinclair ( Deputy Head ), Mr Wilkins ( Headteacher ).
Started off on the jubilee year 76-77 in Mrs. Hairsighn class. Standard old fashioned teacher that got the job done, I say. I was still missing the golden days at Owler Brook Nursery. Some kids I made friends with, I never got to see again, so Whiteways although it was a new beginning; it was also sad as I missed some of my old friends from nursery.
Loved the 2nd years, in Dysons class. What a teacher and character. Very cool. The school discos at dinner times were the business. I was in love with all the girls in the 4th years just for there pans people impersonations.
3rd years, was good and bad. The best thing was being selected in Mrs Finbows class. Every guy wanted to be in her class, she was hotttttttttttt. When she shouted at you, it was discipline at an all new level. Brilliant. Sad thing was I got banned from the school football team by that scummy Mr Patterson. Got caught on the school roof for the 100 hundreth time. He did allow me in the rounders team, which we run the finals with my excellent fielding, on 2 nd base.
4th years, Damn we all started gettin adolescent and wot not. I was in Mrs Jacksons class. That mysterious woman was a very good teacher, some say strange.
Also the inter school sports day against Limpsfield. We used to kick there arses so much, it begun to be embarrassing.
I was in Loxley (green) team. The athletically gifted crew.
All n all, at that time I loved the area, the friends, the school. everything. One thing money can not buy is memories inside your mind. Growing up in the area was brilliant. We could play football on the school property after school because we respected the area, unlike the kids of today. Although the area has gone down hill I still visit there each weekend.
Gleighton 21-12-2006, 15:18 hate to tell you but I used to dance at the disco.Mum made me & my friends blue halter tops with glitter on & skirts.Yeah we did used to think we were mini pans people.

Hey Gleighton and dj4321, I'm sure our paths must have crossed. I did the Owler Lane/Brook - Grimesthorpe - Whiteways - Earl Marshal trip. I was in Mrs Harsigns class at Grimesthorpe as a 2nd year before being a 2nd year again at Whiteways as part of the 1st intake to the school.
I think it was as 3rd years at Whiteways when being part of the lads team we did the rounders double (20 ball and league).. dj, Loxley rocked as a house team. Got into sport especially athletics big time (no chance of that now :-) ) while at Whiteways and playing music (still having a go now) ... Always remember the embarrassment of playing in the Brass Band at assemblies (however, the visiting Music Teacher who taught me Miss Chamberlain was lovely - Many thanks wherever you are...).
I remember Mrs Jackson. She was a very good teacher. Never managed to get in her class though - shame.

I am still based in Sheffield, however I work in Leeds, sometimes I have played in Newcastle. what years were you at Whiteways. I remember being in the music class playing guitar for a period of time. I was not that good at it though.

Working it out I left Whiteways to go to Earl Marshal around 1975 so I may have been a few years above. You probably know one of my brothers though as they were in the years below.
Gleighton 23-12-2006, 12:07 hi biscuit.I played recorder when I wnt to White ways & my maiden name was Burford.I don't know what age you are as I'm 45 but I had a younger sister called sarah who also went to the same schools although she missed out on the glories of Mrs Jackson .I was in the 1st lot to go to whiteways & played at the opening ceremony[still got the invite they sent my mum!!]

Hi Gleighton. I'm 44 so was probably in the year below you as I was in the first lot to go to Whiteways as a 2nd year. Who did you hang around with at school? I might recognise the names...
Gleighton 24-12-2006, 19:10 I hung about with Susan Flynn, Michelle Seal[ she's my cousin] Kay Toulson, Angela Roddis, John Green, Cheryl Cooper, Denise Bacon, Brenda Mc Kenzie. While we were at Whiteways I was in the winning girls rounders team.We won the knockout cup for the school out of all the schools in Sheffield & i was in the badminton team with Richard Ackers, Wayne Wilson & Alan Beresford.Anybody sound familiar?
I used to hang round with Jimmy Flynn, god knows how he never became professional footballer. He got addidas kicks every week. He was also a good player. It was funny that i did meet him after we left Whiteways. I went to Earl Marshall and he went to Hurlfield. We met in the big city finals of the league cup. He was playing for Hurlfield and I was playing for Earl Marshall. They won 3-1 but it was very close. They did have big Andy Morris who went on to play for Chesterfield (Bruno). I had to mark him. It was like hell and I am only 5'5. He's 6'5. I was just rolling in mud from what I can remember. Got man of the match though.
I am sure Jimmy Flynn was the younger brother of Susan Flynn and Mick Flynn. Lived on Whiteways Road.

Yep, I recognise the names. Susan Flynn's younger brother (Thomas I think) was in my year. John Green's mum lives a few doors down from my mum and I definitely played football in the yard with Wayne and Alan. Other names include Derek Stewart, Kenroy Chalmers and Paul Cross
We used to watch you girls play rounders.. There were some big hitters in the team. I think we did the double the same year you guys did.
Did you know anyone from the lower years?
Gleighton 25-12-2006, 11:39 Don't know really.Everybody used to all mix together.Recognise The other names you said.My cousin Michelle went out with Paul Cross for a while.Got any names from the lower years I might recognise.Shall I throw one at you.A lad lived opposite me at Grimesthorpe, I wonder if you knew him- Carl Brittain.Had a sister called Karen
Yep, I knew Carl and Karen. Carl was in the year below me. A whole group of us used to go up town clubbing when we were in the 6th form at Earl Marshal including Carl.
Here's a few names. Dean Walker, Joanne Huntingdon (parents owned the paper shop at the bottom of Wesley Street across from Upwell Lane), Devon Morris, Suffian Abdullah (his brother Ahmed was in the year above you I think), Neil Barker, Julie Hyman, Darren Mckenna. Recognise any?
Gleighton 25-12-2006, 21:23 Definately knew Joanne, used to shop there since I could remember & yes i remember Ahmed. My husband does bathroom design & installation & he came back after seeing a couple at dore- guess what it was Carl.I've know him since forever & we're supposed to be going out for a meal in the new year
Send my regards when you see Carl. He may remember me by my name used here as it was my nickname at school...

Were you in the same team as Jamie Poole and Andrew Holmeshaw at Earl Marshal? I have a newspaper clipping somewhere going on about Earl Marshal's sporting achievements (the school did get good press sometimes :-) ).
Hey Dj, forgot to ask? What sort of music are you playing out? Do you know one of my younger brothers who also went to Owler Lane/Whiteways/Earl Marshal and now goes by the name "Dean of Disco"?
It's great that you guy's are having a re-union on here...but is there anyone reading this from the original years??... any of you teachers out there reading this?
Mr Summerhayes, if you're reading this, let me just say - 'You Da Man!!' The best teacher ever mate, really enjoyed school because of you.

Do you remember the sports day we used to have every year, just before we broke up for the 6 weeks hols?? The older kids from Earl Marshal would come up and join in too and we'd be watching them dreaming how we'd be running that fast one day!:P
There was also sledging down that huge hill at the side of Whiteways in the snow! Cycling proficiency week - when we all got to ride to school and back on our bikes and got certificates from the police at the end of the week for passing!!
Then there were those stories from Mr Wilkins about his son and daughter who must have had every adventure under the sun! sitting in the quads! the tuck shop, chucking stuff at 1st, 2nd & 3rd years in assembly cos we got chairs in the 4th year! ha ha!
OMG yeah its all coming back to me now i also remember playing marbles in the dirt patch at he bottom of the hill and running to the park at the back of the field at dinner time hehehe:hihi:

Ninjamagic 01-04-2008, 22:42 i went there too, remember all the stuff u say, from 1984 - 1988. Remember the juice shop in the dinner hall? i think 2p or 3p a cup to have orange juice with your dinner. except my mates tried giving it all for free so we got thrown out of it!
Baking class...climbing up the roof near the bins. Mr Wilkins always had something to say about road accidents and real life stories. Used to scare the crap out of a 9yr old :)
I will never forget the 3rd year in Mrs Kitcheners class, during one lazy afternoon as she was telling a story to all the class, chairs huddled round and guess what? My mate in the midst of silence threw a banger at her feet :
All i heard next was "Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Oooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuut" you naughty boy! :D :D
Ahh man those where the days. my teachers were:
1984/5 - Mr Dyson
1985/6 - Mrs Kitchener
1986/7 - Mrs Kitchener (she moved up a yr,we were lucky or so we was told!)
1987/8 - Mr Carter
I am a governor at Whiteways. Marcia Carter is the head. Tony Carter is now at Byron Wood. Brian Summerhays is still there, but may be retiring in the not too distant future. He will be a great loss to the school as he is just fantastic.
Yep, I knew Carl and Karen. Carl was in the year below me. A whole group of us used to go up town clubbing when we were in the 6th form at Earl Marshal including Carl.

I didn't go to Witeways as I was on the wrong side of the border, but went to Earl Marshall as I was classed as inside the area (strange).
