View Full Version : Best cover version
kittykat 07-09-2003, 19:34 I hate it when people copy songs its so annoying BUT when theyve written enough great songs of their own ill let them off. My vote therefore goes to Muse and Cant take my eyes off you for best (and strangest) cover version.
Are there any other cover versions out there that are possibly better than the originals? My kazaa list isnt big enough and im looking to expand on it.
DanDruff 07-09-2003, 22:29 Sanctuary did a cover of White Rabbit that blew what's left of my mind....
that muse track is definatly ace, but also the white stripes "i just dont know what to do with myself"
Phanerothyme 08-09-2003, 08:09 Camper Van Beethoven, covering 'Pictures of Matchstick Men' by
The Status Quo.
Or the Georgia Satellites covering 'Hippy Hippy Shake' by the Swinging Blue Jeans (I believe it was used in the Tom Cruise Vehicle, 'Cocktail'.

Sorry RPG, but The White Stripes should not have been let within 300 ft of such a classic song. Its like p*ssed up kareoke at its very worst!
...and I quite like the White Stripes!!!:o
I think the Lemonheads version of "Mrs Robinson" absolutly rocks!!!
Al :)
Faith no More - Easy.
I wouldn't say it is the best cover version but I do quite like it.

Good call! 8)
'I Fought The Law' by The Clash.......top cover version!!
'The Banana Splits theme' - The Dickies!!
DaBouncer 08-09-2003, 10:55 Natalie Enbruglia's: Torn was a good cover of the original which was utter bit sweaty brown and yellow stained pants.
What about Stairway to Heaven by Rolf Harris, how to ruin a classic of all time.
Did Motorhead once do My boy Lollipop??
tinajones 08-09-2003, 11:03 the worst cover version has to be jennifer ellisons rendition of the transvision vamp song 'baby i don't care'. leave it alone jenny! its fine as it is.
some guitar band has aggy's 'genie in a bottle' out at the mo. is that allowed?! surely there should be a timescale law as that song isn't old enough to be covered!
Jeff Buckley - Lilac Wine - amazing!
Not sure if it classes as a cover or not, but is certainly an interesting one!!
The Monkees theme was re-done by Rampage, a drum and base 'group'.
The Monkees wouldn't allow use of their song so they got some similar sounding singers, recorded it to vinal and used a brush to scratch the record for authenticity!!
They then added it to a D&B track, anyone heard it??
Al :)
alchresearch 08-09-2003, 11:52 Ben Folds has just done a cover of a "Cure" song and is only available for download from his site. This goes to prove that it was just Robert Smith that made The Cure's songs crap!
Also, Marc Almond's "Tainted Love" is a good cover.
DaBouncer 08-09-2003, 11:58 Marylin Mansons Tainted Love was a Good Cover.

sorry mate not heard that, I'm bit of a 'jack of all trades' when it comes to music and like a little bit of everything.

greennigel 08-09-2003, 14:14 Marylin Mansons Tainted Love was a Good Cover.
Quite agree but his version of "Sweet Dreams" is even better!
kittykat 08-09-2003, 21:02 who did the original of white stripes i just dont know what to do with myself? i love that song.
It was written by burt baccarach, but sung by dusty springfield :)
kittykat 08-09-2003, 22:07 Youre kidding! I would never have imagined! tried to download it but its not there.

alchresearch 09-09-2003, 20:14 "Wonderful World" by Joey Ramone.
Does anyone else think that today's cover versions are crap but the ones in the 80's were great?
Mosherchik 23-03-2004, 09:33 Okay I know cover versions are often sniffed at and looked down upon, but are there any cover versions out there that you think are far superior to the original? and of course which covers do you find to be shameful and should be put on a pyre?
My favourite would have to be -
Less Than Jake - I Think I Love You (Hiliarious :D eat that Mr Cassidy :headbang: )
The Ramones - Baby I Love You
Least favorite covers include -
the entire Robson and Jerome back catalogue
Uptown Girl - W*****fe (I dont even like the Billy Joel original!)
Teenage Kicks - B***ed (NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOO! How dare they!!!!)
Agent Orange 23-03-2004, 10:06 Erm,
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love
Sid Vicious - My Way
Fear Factory - Cars
evildrneil 23-03-2004, 10:12 The Echo And The Bunnymen cover of People Are Strange?

The Clash-I Fought The Law (Bobby Fuller Four)
Off the top of my head....
Good....
That one by John Jules??? - 'It's a mad world' - no.1 at Xmas (originally by 'Tears for Fears')
Most of the stuff by Eva Cassidy.
Mike Flowers and the Pops - Wonderwall (sorry - but that makes me smile)
Bad....
That cover of 'Comfortably Numb' (don't know the band and don't want to). They should be shot for that abomination.
Madonna - American Pie.
Will Young - 'Light My Fire'
Most of the stuff in the charts seems to be of crappy cover versions.
There are for too many bad ones. Good ones are rare.

Madonna - American Pie.
It was Gary Jules. Madonna's version of American Pie makes me feel physically sick.
I like Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning album, especially Mack the Knife.

Couldn't agree more. One of the worst 'covers' ever. I get sick of cover versions where they change nothing. I did like Public Enemy's version of the buffalo springfield "Hey. You. What's that sound?" track, and orgy's version of blue monday.
Not a big fan of marylin manson's covers, but I think his 'sweet dreams' cover of the eurythmics track is as good... Disturbed did a wicked version of "shout" (also tears for fears, i think) and Fear Factory did an excellent, better-than-the-original version of "cars" by Gary Numan (who approved it's live use on the tour too!).
And who could forget the best cover ever? Has to be Faith no More and "Easy" (Commodores/Lionel Richie)
evildrneil 23-03-2004, 10:49 Will Young - 'Light My Fire'
That wasn't a cover it was an abomination and an act of such hienous and despicable evil that even I would shy away from it!

Can't agree with you there DB! Gloria Jones' original version of Tainted Love is by far the best.

Best cover: Midnight Hour - the Jam

Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy (queen song originally)
Metallica - Am I Evil (Diamond Head)
Metallica - Tuesdays Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Actually, the whole of metallicas garage inc. album which is a cover album
Reel Big Fish - New York New York
it would be great if someone would cover sex machine by james brown
theres nothin wrong with covers in moderation, but when you are atomic kitten and every song is a cover...
The Best:
Placebo - Running Up That Hill (originally by Kate Bush)
William Orbit - Adagio For Strings (originally by Samuel Barber - not strictly a cover as such...)
Elbow - Independent Women (originally by Destiny's Child)
The Darkness - Street Spirit (originally by Radiohead)
The Ataris - Boys of Summer (originally by Don Hendley)
Lost Prophets - Cry Me A River (originally by Justin Timberlake)

Sheep On Drugs - Paradise City (originally by Guns n Roses)
The Worst:
Britney Spears - I Love Rock n Roll (The Arrows)

Worst cover versions?
Kevin the Gerbil - Summer Holiday (how DARE they bastardise a CLASSIC Cliff song like that?!)
Westlife - Mandy (The original was class, Westlife ruined it)
Will Young - Light my fire (Jim Morrisson would die if he heard it, if he wasn't already dead God rest him)
A slight aside to this topic. I heard a good idea recently. (Think it came from someone on Radio 6). Basically they suggested there should be 2 pop charts. One for all these crappy kareoke cover versions and one for new songs.
Carry on.

I did like Perfect Day done by all the different people for the BBC a few years ago.
A.B.Yaffle 23-03-2004, 13:57 How come nobody has mentioned Shakin Stevens "This Ole House" or any Bad Manners rubbish???
I don't normally like cover versions, but i do like the Charmed theme by "love spit love" and the Gary Jules song... but having said that.. i do prefer the originals by The Smiths and Tears For Fears respectively!
Oh, and i do like the Mike Flowers version of Wonderwall!
Why Madonna felt the need to do a pepostrous cover of American Pie when she can write good songs herself I do not know!!! Anyway enough rambling lol
A.B.Yaffle 23-03-2004, 14:04 oooops sorry... "prepostrous"

I've never seen the problem with bands doing cover versions. It doesn't take anything away from the original version so therefore its harmless i say. I do think recording cover versions and selling them as singles is a crime though. :)
Best cover ever:
The Cure - Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
Chris.
Mosherchik 23-03-2004, 16:41 What song would you like to see covered and by which artist .... Points go to the most amusing :D
Ive got a brand new combine harvester - The Darkness

I'd like to see Steph Scully and Max Hoyland out of Neighbours doing a cover of Kylie and Jason's "Especially for you".
Not some lame Karaoke job though, a proper cover.
Mosherchik 23-03-2004, 17:06 If it comes to that Id like to see Tony Blair and George Bush do a version of Sonny and Cher's I Got you Babe :D :D :D
second that emotion-japan.
Message In A Bottle by Machinehead
Brown Eyed Girl by Lagwagon
Take On Me by MxPx
Lake Of Fire by Nirvana
All decent covers, but I'm not a big fan per se.
Maralyn Manson doing that song by the Fast Food Rockers.
mojoworking 25-03-2004, 14:13 Metallica's version of Whiskey In The Jar makes you realise what a great arrangement Thin Lizzy gave to a traditional song
Jeff Buckley - Lilac Wine
Phanerothyme 25-03-2004, 14:22 Summer Lovin' - 14 Iced Bears - they killed that song stone dead, what a relief.

FairyNormal 25-03-2004, 19:54 Marylin Manson ......... Tainted Love

Lemonheads ........ Mrs Robinson
And anything and everything by the amazingly Fantastic Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine............
such as ..........
Crazy........Britney
Whats my age again (forget original artist)
She f***ing hates me .......... Puddle of mud
Love No Doubt's 'It's my life'. Although the original by Talk Talk is brill too so I couldn't pick which is the best version, but I think No doubt did a great version or a great song.
Marilyn Manson's 'Sweet dreams' is fab. Apparently Dave Stewart has said that he prefers it to the original.
Soundgarden did a good version of the Beatles 'Come together'
Alien Ant Farm's 'Smooth Criminal' and Gun's 'Word up' are fun rocked up versions of the original. And, can't remember who did them, but Britney's 'Baby one more time' and Tiffany's 'Think we're alone now' have been rocked up into songs you dance to when drunk!
Bad covers - well alot of these songs that the boybands cover basically.
Ned Ludd 26-03-2004, 14:06 Mr Tambourine Man - Byrds
Absolutely Sweet Marie - Jason and The Scorchers
versions of Dylan songs
Johnny B Goode - Johnny Winter
Roll Over Beethoven - ELO
versions of Chuck Berry classics
Just doing some thinking about covers as they seem to be ever on the increase. Why are some exceptional and some just dire? I'm thinking of the Scissor Sisters absolutely murdering Comfortably Numb, yet whenever I hear Cake doing "I will Survive" I can't stop singing it for the rest of the day.
Does anyone have any tales of odd or quirky covers done live. I have a copy of the Fraggle Rock theme (possibly by Green Day) which I guess would have gone down a treat when they first did it.
Jodn.
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2765&highlight=Cover+versions
The Clash - I faught the Law (Bobby Fuller 4)
Jimmi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Stereophonics - Hanbags & Gladrags (Rod Stewart, but originally by Chris Farlowe, I believe)
Vow Wow - Helter Skelter (Beatles)
Deff Leppard - Action (Sweet)
Worst covers :- Madonna's woeful interpretation of the best pure pop song of all time (anyone who was anyone in the 60's gets a cryptic mention in the lyrics), namely Don McLean's American Pie.
And why oh why did Sting allow Puff daddy to cover his greatest achievement 'Every Breathe You Take'? Woeful.
Dario G's Sunshine - this song is Dream Academy's brilliant 'Life In A Northern Town' with the lyrics all-but removed and the title changed.
Heaven by DJ Sammy. Bryan Adam's rock ballad subjected to the dreaded dance mix treatment.

I misled you slightly there. Mike D'Abo did record it, but only on an album. He never issued it as a single.
I agreed with RPG (sorry Pontious).
Farground Attraction did a great cover of Do You Want To Know A Secret a good few years ago.
I covered Hypnotize by The White Stripes about an hour ago in my living room but I don't think I'll be releasing it.
Just been listening to Talking Heads - Take Me To The River!
Original by the Rvd Al Green.
FAB
Albert Tross 29-03-2004, 14:30 Liitle Angels cover of "First Cut is the deepest" is the best version of the song.
I agree to about Leppards version of "Action"
Best cover.....
Johnny Cash's version of NiN's 'Hurt' - 'cos it makes me cry for all the RIGHT reasons.
Worst cover.....
Madonna's American Pie - 'cos it makes me cry for all the WRONG reasons.....
UB40 - Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis)
UB40 & Chrissie Hynd - I've Got You Baby (Sonny & Cher)
or any UB40 cover.
Nazareth - This Flight Tonight (Joni Mitchell)
Nazareth - Love Hurts (Jim Capaldi)
noseyrosie 06-04-2004, 22:33 Obviously it's a cheap way for record companies to make a lot of money, but regardless of that, these things seriously **** me off!
I've always said (see funeral songs thread), if you can't improve on the original or change it and make it completely different, don't bother!
There are some things you just shouldn't do, like 'Sam n Mark' from Popstars attempting a Beatles song, or the completely inappropriate 'War is over' single, completely tactless (although it was supposed to be ironic when first released i think). It's not right! It should be illegal! There are some things you just should not touch!
Phew...can anyone think of any covers that were better than the originals?
Yodameister 06-04-2004, 22:54 both Manic Street Preachers and Marilyn Manson version of "Suicide is Painless"
(bit contraversial this one) Nirvana version of "The Man Who Sold The World"
Travis version of "Hit me baby, one more time"
Frankie Goes To Hollywood version of "Born to Run", and their version of "do you now the way to san jose?" come to that
Russ Abbot's version of "Atmosphere"
Ok, kidding bout the last one!!
But there are literally hundreds of great covers.
I think the thing about a good cover is you have to bring out something about the song which the original didn't play on as strongly. That way you are not just doing an inferior copy, but a slightly new piece of art.

The bloke in the flat cap is called Marc Mann. I don't know his history, but I think he worked on some of George's solo albums.
Jim Capaldi was definitely there on drums, but on some songs he was doing harmony vocals and percussion.
Thanks for that MOJO.
It was also good to see Andy Fairweather-Lowe taking guitar leads and vocals.
Great concert.
mojoworking 08-04-2004, 23:21 I was surprised how good Andy Fairweather Low was. I knew he'd been playing guitar in Eric Clapton's band for years, but his slide playing really stood out at the concert for George.
The biggest surprise for me was Joe Brown. He's still sounding great after all these years. And there was hardly a dry eye to be found when he closed the show with I'll See You In My Dreams.
Joe Brown and Eric Clapton were both asked to play at Ronnie Lane's memorial concert at the Albert Hall last night.
Both on tour at the moment so had to decline but they sent goodwill messages to be read out.

I remember seeing him fronting Amen Corner at the City Hall in 1967 when they supported Hendrix.
He was one cool mod dude. Almost as cool as Steve Marriott.
Sam Miguel 10-04-2004, 11:29 I've been thinking about this and then the answer came to me on the radio this morning.
La Bamba by Los Lobos. It blinds the original. Great guitar riff as well.
Fantastic song.
StarSparkle 09-02-2005, 20:43 My usual position on cover versions is that the original artist inevitably creates the ultimate version of a song, and any/all covers are unnecessary. However, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that when I thought hard about it, I did come up with a few instances where the cover version actually improved on the original:-
- Nirvana's cover of Bowie's "The Man who Sold the World"
- Puff Daddy's version of the Police's "Every Breath You Take"
- Stiff Little Fingers' live version of Mud's "Tiger Feet"
- Sid Vicious' rendition of Frank Sinatra's "My Way"
Much as I love the Manics, I can't in all conscience add their cover of Guns 'n Roses "It's so Easy" to this list - unfortunately, their version doesn't touch the original! :o
StarSparkle
a couple of bands no one will of heard of i guess...
fm - i heard it thru the grapevine
jaded heart - larger than life (the backstreet boys original!!!!!)
also
elvis - my way
limp bizkit - faith (for comedy factor)
muddycoffee 09-02-2005, 21:11 Santana's Version of She's not there
is better than the zombies original.
Badlands did a version of
James Taylor's Fire and Rain
This is such a shockingly incredible interpretation of a great song that it makes you look anew and see what a great song it is. In my view it is better than Taylor.
David Lee Roth did a version of the Just a Gigolo/I ain't got nobody medley which is better than the Sinatra version.
The James taylor Quartet did a hammond organ driven version of the Motorhead song which is cooky and brilliant.
Thin Lizzy made Whisky in the Jar, into a song that the whole world can sing, what a superb version
Jimi Hendrix,
All along the watchtower. Bob has never been a great singer, but Jimi set this song alight and sent it into the stratosphere.
Stevie Ray Vaughan [SRV]
Came along in Jimi's footsteps and made a slightly improved version of Little wing.
Cake did a version of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps
which is better than the original version which I heard by Doris Day, [or was it Rosmary Cloonie?] Maybe someone who is older can argue with me about this.

I'd agree with the Santana version of 'She's Not There'.
Also would add Rod Stewart's version of Tom Waits' Downtown Train.
Stereophonics version of 'Handbags and Gladrags'
St Etienne's version of Neil Young's 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'.

Ousetunes 10-02-2005, 07:20 Dear Prudence by Siouxsie and the Banshees (1983), a Lennon song off the Beatles 1968 double album 'The Beatles';
I Don't Want To Talk About It by Everything But The Girl (1988), which I know Rod Stewart released in 1977 (double-a with The First Cut Is The Deepest, itself a cover!) but I don't think Rodders wrote it;
Without You - Nilson, 1975. Originally by Badfinger.
Can I also include Eric Carmen's 1976 All By Myself which is based on Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto, arguable THE finest piece of classical music ever. I've included this so that you can see how Mariah Carey took a chainsaw to it and splattered its blood all over the ceiling.
Thanks for that bastardisation, Mariah!!

I Don't Want To Talk About It was written by Danny Whitten and orginally recorded by his band Crazy Horse.
Rod's version is still the best for my money, though.
The First Cut Is The Deepest was written and originally recorded first by Cat Stevens. The first UK hit version was by P.P.Arnold.
Ousetunes 10-02-2005, 07:38 Cheers mojoworking. Y'know, maybe you're right, that Rodders' version IS the best. I like them both, each has its own identity. And The First Cut is The Deepest I recall being released by PP Arnold, but I didn't know it was Cat Stevens who wrote it. I can see that now.
Slightly away from this thread, my fave Rod Stewart track in The Killing of Georgie. Maybe I can include that as it, ahem, borrows strongly from another Beatles track, Don't Let Me Down, b-side to Get Back IIRC.

Cat Stevens wrote some great pop songs before he went all serious in the early 70s. Apart from his own hits such as Matthew & Son, he also wrote Here Comes My Baby which was a huge hit for the Tremeloes in 1967.
This in turn was covered by The Mavericks a few years ago.

Draggletail 11-09-2005, 00:35 David Gray singing 'Say hello, wave goodbye' originally by Soft Cell.
Far more 'depth' and 'feeling' in the cover version :)
40summat 11-09-2005, 01:25 The Cult version of SAHB's Faith Healer
Clawfingers version of Vienna originaly by ultravox
The Missions version of Like a hurricane by Neil young

The Phil collins treatment of True colours is bad and i'm not keen on Live and let die by G&R either.
Albatross 11-09-2005, 06:55 The best cover and better than the original by miles has to be Sheffields finest.
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

Turnsville 13-09-2005, 09:17 Supergrass - Condition (Cover of Kenny Rogers "Just Dropped In (to see what condition my condition was in") FAB!!
How about Saxon's cover of the Christopher Cross song "Ride like the wind".
For those of you who like a laid back number the Carpenters do a mean interpretation of "Ticket to Ride".
and finally for something more contemporary, Counting Crows with great support from Vanessa Carlton's voice doing a Rocking version of "Big yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell.
