This St Bartholomews? (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/hpac.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=7992)
smiths565 28-01-2005, 16:05 Could be - but I was expecting it to be either a hospital or an area.
any ideas.

Hospital births were unusual then (but possible). Is it a chinese wispers thing, and their birth was registered at St Barts? (I'm not sure when the registry office took over from the church as the register holders)
smiths565 28-01-2005, 16:44 Could be I suppose. I don't know when the registry office started. I'd assumed earlier than 1895.
Anyway, thanks for the idea's.
The BMD site shows he was born in the Ecclesall Bierlow area.
which doesn't include Attercliffe.
it does include Bramhall; Dore; Ecclesall Bierlow; Ecclesall Central; Ecclesall North; Ecclesall South; Ecclesall West; Nether Hallam; Norton; Sharrow; Upper Hallam.

Thanks for the help everybody. I think 'retep' is probably right. He was probably born in a hospital at Ecclesall Bierlow and lived in a parish connected to St Bart's.
'Dollypeg' - thanks also - I didn't know there was church there. this could be the St Bartholomews I'm looking for.
'Strix' - thanks for the info.
Cheers
Robert.

Greybeard 01-02-2005, 19:46 Here's an interesting web page about the Nether Edge Hospital/Ecclesall Union Workhouse
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/EcclesallBierlow/EcclesallBierlow.shtml
I was born there and also went to school there in the building that used to be the Ecclesall Bierlow Union offices...and my great grandfather was also born there, - when it was the workhouse ! :D

st barts on primrose view is STILL there-rebuilt
stevie1957 01-02-2005, 23:48 I too was christened at the old St Bartholomews on Primrose Hill. It was pulled down and rebuilt. My parents lived with my grand parents for a short while on Penistone Road. We always used the back door/yard which lead out to West Don Street In fact all my ants and uncles went to West Don Street School during and just after the war. I can just remember the old Kelvin before they built the flats.
