Its because its Adaware. The Monopoly freaks, Mircosoft bought them out! PAH!

Doesn't feel like Adaware and their website www.lavasoft.com doesn't mention this. However, I'll carry on using Adaware and Spybot as you can't be over-protected can you.

Doesn't work with Win '98 though....

Though AdAware does (work with Win 98, that is)!

Strange that an official MS product won't work on a MS OS, but a third party one does:loopy:

Thats like saying everything that is developed in the future should still be able to work on Win 3.1. Win 98 is 7 years old now, how long should it be supported for?

Besides Win98 is so old, there is no need to worry about security as no-one is interested in attacking such an antiquated operating system.

It's not AdAware, it was a company called Giant they bought. See this link:

http://www.giantcompany.com/

If you look at the installed software, half of the file names begin with "giant".

I stand corrected. I did read somewhere that they bought them.

Just did another search and the buy out of giant is everywhere...

Sound interesting. I'm going to download and install this.

I was hit by spyware last week. Surprisingly, Adaware didn't detect it (so much for being my anti-spyware package of choice  ) and it required the combination of at least two other anti-spyware programs to completely clean my system.

Didn't think 98 was supported anymore by Microsoft

It got a reprieve till this, year a couple of years ago (due to the then slow uptake of HexPee)!

I'll just stick Linux or a BSD derivative on the Server/GW pc. Then I can carry on using the SW I've already paid for without the need to pay for it again!

Apparently it works quite well. Unfortunately this will probably mean Microsoft will start charging for it in six months time :( .

I haven't tried it because i have had no spyware of any kind for at least 3 months. A combination of Firefox/Opera, Spywareblaster and Spywareguard have kept my system clean (Now I've done it!:hihi: ).

It's certainly better than many of the spyware removers I've been using - just downloaded it and after only doing a scan with my old one yesterday it's found boatloads more.

The BBspot spoof article is very good, but even funnier is that the guys on the CBTechs forum seem to take it as serious!

First of all nationally has nothing to do with this. And that is a mockery of our country. Just always keep in mind what has happened between your country and the Good Ol' US. Remember? Becauase I quite frankly do. You tried to run our country and failed.

But back on the real topic. This was no scam; the anti-spyware was pulled from Microsoft's site for over 3 days. They updated this so it would be fixed. And why would you bring nationally into this? Same way race has nothing to do with this. That is just wrong. But that is why you coudn't download it for over 3 days because they was fixing it.

Just to note... There were recent reports that the beta does highlight valid applications on your PC as spyware and has resulted in at least one of my clients wiping the software I'd installed to help him when his PC went foobar...

So, be careful when you use it...

This is now the victim of a trojan that attempts to disable MS AntiSpyWare.

Details @ The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/09/banking_trojan/).

Ran windows update on my XPSP2 box last night.
It downloaded some updates, then failed to install them as MS Antispyware blocked the registry write.

DOH!

Just wondering.
Is Microsofts Anti-Spyware better than Ad-Aware?

Cheers all.

I don't think there is a definitive best spyware removal program. None of them (that i am aware of) remove all spyware so IMO you are better running a few together. I tend to stick to the old favourites Ad-Aware and Spybot s&d. Even these don't pick anything up any more thanks to a combination of Firefox, Spyware Blaster and SpywareGuard ;).

I would say Microsoft Anti-Spyware is better, as it detected several spyware programs on my machine that Ad-Aware did not.

If you tested them the other way around you'd probably find that adaware removes a few that MS misses too.

Maybe, maybe not. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I had a specific spyware threat that several well-known spyware removers did not detect.

As MS Anti-Spyware was the only one to detect and remove the threat, I would rate it higher than its competitors.

I really don't fancy prostituting my machine just to test which Spyware package is the best...

I've just checked my spyware prog and the latest Microsoft update was Feb 8th. Hopefully this one will plug the hole.
