Morning All,

Just found this sick story on Digital Spy

A New York radio station has suspended the entire staff of its breakfast show after it broadcast a sick song ridiculing victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.

Hot 97's Miss Jones in the Morning show, hosted by DJ Tarsha Nicole Jones, aired the segment multiple times last week. The song, sampling the melody of the 1985 famine relief single 'We Are The World', featured lyrics such as: "Go find your mommy / I just saw her float by / a tree went through her head / and now the children will be sold to child slavery."

How sick is that?  How did an entire group of people decide to go along with something like that, and not one of them think 'Hang on, this might cause us a few problems'? :loopy:

The rest of the story is here (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds18746.html) if you are interested.

But everything outside of the US is just fiction to them. The rest of the world doesn't exist.

I despair.

Add that to the persecution of Iraqui prisoners and the damage to Babylon..... Well!

Either that, or it's a dirty tricks campaign, designed to alienate the rest of the world against America (some more).

One of the reasons I joined this forum (even though I'm an American) was that I'd been lurking, reading everyone's comments for about a year. And I happened upon a thread someone started, I believe it was called something like "Hatred of the American people", or something like that, after our presidential election, that had a few right on observations, but was mostly, well, absolutely untrue.

In American radio, (and I certainly wouldn't expect someone from another country to realize this) the name of the game is ratings. DO NOT believe for one second, that the management of this particular station didn't know what was going on. Yeah, their staff is 'suspended'. Probably with pay, until this dies down. Then they'll all be back on the air again. If they were truly in trouble, the FCC would have yanked their license, fired everyone, and closed them down. FOREVER.

In other words, it's a sick joke. I personally don't find anything about it very funny. But then, I'd rather have my toes cut off than listen to someone like Howard Stern. Who's been getting away with one sick, nasty, sexist stunt after another for years.

http://www.howardstern.com/

I also don't agree with persecuting Iraqi prisoners. But as far as I know, all of them still have their heads.

I also don't like the war in Iraq. My cousin is over there, right now. And we are worried sick about him! I think we should get the hell out of there. The sooner the better.

Yeah, we've got our faults. God knows. But everything outside the US is just fiction to us? The rest of the world doesn't exist?

If that's the case, maybe Amazon.com

http://s1.amazon.com/paypage/PX3BEL97U9A4I/102-4508392-1144107

can get it's more than 15 million dollars back. (Including the money my husband and I donated) And that's just one American company, folks. It doesn't count what numerous other private US charities, other US companies, and the US Government itself has donated.

I've enjoyed this forum very much. And I hope to continue to enjoy it. I've found most people to be very pleasant, and I would love nothing more than to someday have the time and money to travel. And England would be one of the countries at the top of my list. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the British people. English roots run very deep in America. Deeper than I think any of you realize. We are a very young country, and we share much more with you than language.

Please know that some Americans DO care about the rest of the world. We really do.

:) Sierra Sorry if my generalisation upset you Sierra, but you're obviously less self-obsessed than the majority of your fellow countrymen parading across our (and your) TV screens. I have relatives over there, and our holiday in New England was an eye opener.

Hope your cousin gets home okay.

Sick jokes are a way of dealing with the bad stuff in life. The debate is about when is it too soon to start telling them. I've heard many jokes about 9/11, and all of them came out of British mouths. I have to say though, most of them were straight-up, traditional punchline jokes, one-liners and puns, not cruel parody.

Hi Sierra (I always wanted to say that..sorry)

You seem to have hit the nail on the head with your feelings. I know that not all Americans are the same as the gung ho Red Necks that the media would have us all believe is the norm over there, in fact most of the Americans I have met have had a good grasp on what is happening outside of your country and have often supplied me with a lot of food for though when listening to their thoughts from that side of the Atlantic, especially about the happenings in Northern Ireland.

The two things I like most about Americans are that they are open and make great friends, and that above all else you always play to win.

The down side of it is summed up in two words and a letter.

George W Bush. Hey everyone makes mistakes though we had Margaret Hilda Thatcher for years :(

Well,

thank you all for your kind words. And Strix, you didn't upset me. I could never be angry with someone who loves dogs as much as you do! And thanks for your good thoughts about my cousin. We're all hoping he makes it home safely. He's only 22.

As an American, I've always been puzzled about something. I've always wondered WHY, oh why is our culture so popular the world over? What's so great about it? Sure, there's things about it I like. Some TV shows. HBO. Disneyland. The Simpsons. Jazz. Chunky peanut butter. Dairy Queen chocolate dip ice cream cones. Being able to get a cheeseburger and fries at 3 am without getting out of my car. Heh. (and I don't mean McDonalds, I mean a place like this:

http://www.melsdrive-in.com/index.html

And this place, is rather cool as well:

http://www.costco.com/ There is literally something for every member of our family. Even my furry child. (the dog)

And this place:

http://www.ktvu.com/restaurants/1898543/detail.html makes the very best hot dogs on the planet!

My mother traveled to China last year, and was disgusted to see a McDonalds/Starbucks and KFC. In Beijing!

She was still incredulous when she arrived in Shanghai. And was confronted by a Pizza Hut, baskin-robbins ice cream, and Taco Bell. Thousands of years worth of culture, and they want to eat Taco Bell?! Whatthehellever.

Maybe someone can explain it to me. I am truly baffled about this.

I don't mean to be thin skinned and hyper sensitive, or prevent people from saying what they want to about America and Americans. Please, speak your minds. I'm interested in hearing from you how we are regarded in the rest of the world. I guess not too good right now, huh?

And I'm not saying were perfect, and never make mistakes. Hah! Ha ha hahahaha!!! Or that all Americans have impeccable manners. There's plenty of Americans who go somewhere and behave like a horse's patoot. And a whole lot more who don't need to leave home at all.

And I liked your little joke about my name owldad. It's actually a very common name here in California for girls.

I agree Chillicat. Some years ago (at a family funeral no less. God, I'm so ashamed!), some of us younger family members (out of earshot of everyone else of course) laughed ourselves silly at the jokes in these books.

There's a whole series of them. But be warned. They are EXTREMELY politically incorrect, and some people might find the jokes VERY offensive. And I guess, yeah. It's sort of "sick" humor.
