I have been lookign and knicked a link from another thread (thank you). Isn;t it a shame. The below picture shows park square roundabout. look at all the green. Now look at it now. I bet you wont see much green if it was took from the same place (oop - htere will be abuilding tere now!).

I think it is sad that we have to have all these new high-rise flats etc.

Whats it going to be like in 40 years time. Will there be any Green?

I know what you're saying, but equally look at the derelict buildings and crap piles in that shot!

One thing Sheffield is not short of is trees and green. We just need some decent roads, buses, hospitals, police and a council that gives a toss!

that pic was taken from the block of park hill flats, nearest the market. it would be relatively easy to recreate the same shot, simply by going up to the top level, Norwich row.

a lot of the green has been lost, agreed, but that's because the supertram track has been lain on the land there.

If you go back to my thread, Mark, you'll find that some nice kind person has already included a photobucket shot of what it looks like now. You're right. It looks nothing like it did!

I think that picture - the old one - looks terrible to be honest. This is supposed to be the heart of one of our great cities - the reason there's so much green and open space is that the buildings are decaying and delapidated and waste land hasn't been developed.

That was taken in the heart of the eighties recession - a pretty bleak time in very many ways. The more high rise development, the better as far as I can see. Then maybe Sheffield will have the vibrant metropolitan buzz that its size promises.

That place used to be muggers alley. I prefer it now.

The other thing that's not visible on that picture is the air quality...:)

I remember coming in to Sheffield in the late 1970s / early 1980s and seeing a yellow cloud stretched over the city....

Sheffield still has, I believe, the highest percentage of greenery within it's boundaries of any British city.

Park Square was just a patch of grass really. Now it looks much better with the little pine forrest at the top and the flowering shrubs etc, there are more trees now than there were before I bet. Once the ivy and other climbers cover more of the concrete it will look great. The trees round Ponds Forge look cool too.

Here is a current picture:

Most of the greenery is gone because of the tramway being built. but some does still exist.

It does look a remarkably flat scene, but that's because all round the edges of the roundabout there appears to be rubble and scrap land used for car parking.

This picture from a different angle shows there is still a green side to Park Square!

I think there were more ugly high rise flats about the city of sheffield then than today mate. Norfolk Park anyone?

I see your points that you are making but i really don't like seeing all these flats they are building. I say stick to houses!

Seeing the modern picture i still say the older picture looks alot better.

sheffield is a dump now, i used to be so proud of it and tell people from other cities who thought it was a dump how wrong they were and actually be able to prove them wrong. its just a big disgrace now and needs cleaning up, i for one would volunteer in a mass organised clean up, scrubbing buildings, clearing gutters etc.

Are you looking at a different sheffield to me? Sheffield looks and feels better than it ever has. Although i agree some buildings could do with a clean eg the town hall.

I've got a really good picture taken from the top of Meersbrook Park. I'll dig it out and scan it in later.

Afraid it's still there Joe, plainly visible on a cold calm winter's morning. We sometimes use the top road from High Bradfield to avoid the chaos at Malin Bridge/Hillsboro' and I have often thought to myself...when we get down there we'll be breathing that !!! :(

Makes for some spectacular sunrises though at this time of year :)
