Heading out of Sheffield on the A625 Hathersage Rd. Pass the HSBC sports ground on your left. About 200 yards on, opposite the right turn for Long Line, there's an overgrown field with a single storey building in it. On the roof is an odd looking box shaped construction. The building has no windows and no distinguishing features.
What on earth is it ?

Spot on Saxon.
It's a disused set of changing rooms etc.
You used to be able to see the remains of a high jump pit in the overgrown grass.
I used to cycle up that way and beyond around six years ago and that field, plus its contents, was up for auction. I think this was about June, 1999.
I've no idea if it reached its reserve or, if it was sold, who bought it.
I agree, it looks a bit of a blot now, but what is the mysterious box on the roof? Does that mean its still in use? By whom and for what?
An old sports field would make sense because there's an old criicket screen on its side next to the building. The field is well overgrown though so it must be a few years since it was used. The funny thing is that I always thought the building was unused and being left to ruin but last summer I saw people painting the woodwork so someone is looking after it.
Thanks for the replies, by the way.
Just when ladylove was rubbing her hands in glee! :hihi:

It was bought - a property developer is sitting on it, I assume waiting to see if the green belt moves.
I guess the box on the roof will contain water tanks for the showers.

I played rugby on it 8 years ago - that was the last time I know of it being used. It had 2 pitches on it back then.
There was some work done on it a few months ago as well, but it looks like it was just to keep vandals out of the building as much as anything else.
At one stage this belonged to Sheffield Polytechnic (Before it became Hallam University) My Dad used to play cricket for the Poly team and I spent many a summer evening in the pavilion and long jumping with mates.
When I started at the Poly in 1976 the football trials were held there. The land, although green belt, was bought by a developer for an outrageous sum - who will be sitting on it waiting for the city to run out of building land. The land opposite Fenella Walker's farm & riding stables is up for auction soon, 40 acres - might see the same thing happen.
