When I arrived home tonight I heard from me neighbours that 2 Police Officers had been examining my cars parked road and driveway of my house. Tthere are 4 old MK I Fiestas undergoing various stages of restoration. They had apparently been checking the tax disks, all of which were current, but also looking through the windows and examining the interiors by torchlight.

I was not aware the Police went around on foot at night checking out tax disks with torches.....anyone else noticed this? I know the cars were on a public road but never seen them on foot before checking out cars. Apparently they ignored newer cars on the road but were carefully examining older vehicles.

I just wonder what the Police would have made of one of them as it had a set of number plates on the back seat from a car I registered as SORN last year and which is now in cardboard boxes as it turned out to be beyond restoration. Might have made them raise an eyebrow.........

Similar thing happen on my road a couple of months ago.

Four policemen (yes four!!) on foot were stood around looking at an oldish car (sorry don't know the make but it was red ((I'm a girl!!))) for about 15 minutes. They wrote something and put it under the wiper and then wondered off down the road.

The car is still there and as far as I'm aware they didn't come back.

Strange.

They were around the shops in Stanwood at lunchtime when I walked past them and then later as I walked home from college they were at the top of wood lane.

I have never seen a police officer in Stannington on foot....

older cars, particulary Fords, have been used increasingly as 'pool cars'. This usually involves either stealing a car, using it in crime for a few days or weeks (shoplifting, robbery, drug dealing), then torching or just abandoning it, or buying a cheap old car, failing to register a new owner and using it in crime.

Don't worry, if you haven't done anything wrong, you are fine.

If there has been a lot of car crime in the area recently then it could be pro active foot patrol, taking a note of any vehicles leaving valuables on show. A letter then gets sent to the owner telling them they're a theft waiting to happen!

Does anyone know what is going on in Stannington, the police presence there was unlike anything I have ever seen before, cops on horses, foot police, cars, vans, one police car had 4 cops in it, has something happened there or is there a famous person going to the college up there ?

Any info would be appreciated.

When we first moved up here from Walkley 7 years ago we used to see Police Officers all the time, especially in the Sportsman, usually following up enquiries about drunken brawling in the Tap room.

In Lincoln they actually remove any visible valuables from cars parked on roads and leave a penalty-style notice on the windscreen saying what they've done. I didn't believe it at first and checked a couple of times when I walked past these cars.

there are gangs of youths coming from across town to cause trouble with myers grove pupils the reason for police presence is because some are pupils who have been excluded and as i say many from across town, the police are saying it is racially motivated, information from my friend who lives at stannington.

The police are making their presence felt on patrol in all areas of the city In a new programme. They did crookes a few months ago. They're spending about a week? (can't remember the duration) in each district, talking to locals and being friendly to improve the image. I think the local shops will have leaflets about the scheme..
That's all, nowt sinister. Make sure you haven't got any dope plants on your back windowsill!

Tahnks for all that info. I was concerned the Police were taking undue attention to my collection of old Fords. As for using them (old Fords) as "pool" crime cars, this would be somewhat difficult. One has no starter motor or HT leads and one of the others is currently missing its engine. Ideal for that quick getaway for sure......

I know old Fords are used for crime, but this is usually mid to late 80s cars, mine are all pre 1982 and I doubt anyone would do a bank job in a MK I Ford Fiesta which was bright gold and highly recognizable and probably the only one on the road at any one time in Sheffield. Not a good move.......

I did hear from the neighbours they appeared interested in the set of number plates on the back seat and were seen to do some radio checks.....no doubt they got back the info that the plates belonged to a SORN car. Apparently they then were looking for the rest of the car as it was registered at being kept at my address. If they wish to see it I can let then view the 11 cardboard boxes most of it is now in.

STill i guess its good to know the Police are out looking for stolen, untaxed or "dodgy" cars in the area.
