Coldplay, without a doubt. They've taken blandness to a new level. Chris Martin always comes across as a humourless git too, who takes himself far too seriously. Then again, he named his child 'Apple' so he must at least have a rudimentary sense of humour.

Though I must admit that there are a couple of good covers of 'The Scientist' in existence. It's quite a good song without the irritation factor of his whiny voice.

Snow Patrol did a fairly amusing version of Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love', so I'll let them off the boring accusation for that. 'Set the Fire to the Third Bar' with Martha Wainwright is also excellent. I like 'Chasing Cars' and 'Spitting Games' too. In fact, you're wrong about Snow Patrol :D .

Mm Travis are very similar to the bands you mention but I really like them a lot - one of the best gigs ever was their reunion tour at the leadmill about four years ago.

I really don't like Keane - they just really annoy me. It's music by numbers.

Bands I sort of like but don't - I'm not a big Snore patrol fan either - I managed to evade most of their set at V although i like the odd song and again have the album. Also i find the killers pretty boring... they have a few really excellent songs but the last album was dire and live they were uninspiring. Coldplay I have both albums but i never play more than a couple of tracks

also Coldplay are very drab [...]
It isn't that it's bad music, just they don't vary their sound from one song to the next. It'll be one piano ballad after the next, with the same guitar sound and the same bass part as all the other songs. I've seen Coldplay live a few times and have always enjoyed it, just musically its about as varied as eating cheese every meal for 6 weeks.

Guns n Roses
Stereophonics
Beautiful South
Coldplay
The Streets
Travis
Bryan Adams
Meat Loaf

...to name a few. It's music for people who aren't really into music, if you know what i mean - they've got an iPod and feel they ought to put something on it.

That's very harsh on Guns n Roses and The Streets - otherwise, good list.

I'll add Queen and any AOR American group

Most bands. Same old bobbins. Arctics are good at what they do, but pretty derivative. The drummer is the best thing about that group, the guy's a powerhouse.

Cosyne Project, now you're talking:)

people often equate success with boring only ever hearing perhaps overplayed singles. The bands mentions most on here coldplay, Travis, snowpatrol are anything but boring - you look at their earlier albums and there are some really inventive music on them.

I remember when I first heard shiver off parachute the energy and passion of the song or perhaps the melody on the thoroughly gorgeous Driftwood and almost anything off final straw - anyone in the business of writing music will tell you how good this music is. Lest we forget the Robbie Williams hit 'she's the one' written by the brilliant Karl Wallinger of World Party and the waterboys.

it is true though that it is not fashionable to say you like anything popular as it goes against the very nature of our politicized cultural identity. The individual balks at the mere suggestion it May in fact be a social and herd animal.

My musical tastes are extremely eclectic - if it moves me I'll buy or steal it.

But what i believe are the emperors new clothes of the music industry are not the easy target above but those who masquerade as fashionable, kitch or even cute. Lounge acts such as Air can go take a flying **** back to Franceland and i don't care if you do get Jarvis and Neil hannon to appear - it;s appalling. Other albums i have listened to and deleted for showing a distinct lack of imagination, Mylo, anything by the Kaiser Chief, Mark (what have you done with my favorite songs) Ronson, Radioheads' latest offering (half-hearted and direction-less), PJ harvey - White Chalk, and that's just the good bands that have made dull records and there is a lot of music that is hideously **** - but that goes without saying.

Having seen two of the above acts in the last week and as someone who is out and about watching live bands a couple of times each week I'd really have to disagree with you.

Paul Heaton will go down as one of the best songwriters of this century. It's always been deeply unfashionable to like him yet their music is owned by 1 in 6 households. He's just done a mainly sold out tour with yet unreleased songs - Sheffield was the only place that wasn't, although i believe it sold out on the night. People who aren't really into music would not go and see an artist that they'd never seen his songs believe me. The new stuff really shows off his voice and is not twee in the slightest which i conceed some TBS stuff can come across as.

'Phonics are one of the best live acts out there - I've seen them at least ten times (lost count now) and they are brilliant. It means nothing i don't really rate as a song, it is a bit looping and plodding and I don't think it was a wise choice as a single but the rest of the album is infinitely better. Kelly could sing the alphabet song to me and I'd be entranced his voice is amazing. He is rated by Plant, McCartney, the Gallaghers, Weller, the Chemical brothers and has done lots of session work with the above. The phonics also have Javier's side project, kelly's side project. They are certainly not for people who don't like music. They are again reviled by the media until recently as they never forgave kelly for mister writer.

I fell asleep at Moby gig at the City Hall a few years ago; I think it was the music. I can't listen to him now; very odd, as I used to really like him.

Oh well, no great loss.

A lot of the modern 'indie' music is really disappointing nowadays - I find bands might do one or to good singles but the rest is just awful. So I stick to buying those compilation albums where I find a band is a bit of a 'Curate's egg'.

Travis though were good, they wrote some decent songs, as did Coldplay at first. But then they went quite dull, as though they were trying to fill the gap Radiohead left by not doing 'another OK Computer' and choosing to go weird instead. Then loads of other bands rushed in to help fill that gap - Snow Patrol (only have one good song), Keane etc. It's all very dull.

Then you get the bands who try and copy the Arctic Monkeys and these are also rubbish, or the Pete Doherty wannabes - who'd want to be Doherty? ;)

Most of all though, far worse than any of the above is this corporate Emo rubbish - watch Kerrang channel and it's full of play-by-numbers wet rag 'rock' that's about as rock as a hummus salad. :(

I'm not going to bother with the boy/girl bands. Read it as taken that I find them boring. As well as:
Keane
Coldplay
My Chemical Romance
Razorlight (the most boring live band. Ever.)
The Streets (Poetry or garbage? Garbage.)
U2
The Killers (****ing abysmal)

Just imagine if Celine Dion became a member of Travis, her and the Travis lead singer would together probably be responsible for around 50 suicides in the Sheffield area alone, per day!
