Is anybody going on this?

Lincoln Christmas Fayre
Sunday 9th December 2007
Steam Haulage throughout behind 71000 Duke of Gloucester

Our steam hauled train leaves York at 08.30 hauled by the popular BR Pacific Duke of Gloucester, number 71000. We will call at Leeds, Wakefield and Sheffield to pick up further customers. Our locomotive will have to work hard on the climb to Dronfield Tunnel and then on past Chesterfield with its crooked spire. Leaving the Erewash Valley we take the Midland Railway route through Nottingham, to Newark Castle station and Lincoln where there will be nearly four hours to explore.

Lincoln Market is a huge festive market that takes over the grounds of the Norman Castle and most of the streets, with black and white timber-framed buildings, surrounding the fine Norman Cathedral. Brightly coloured stalls, decorated with lights, sell every conceivable Christmas gift and traders are in Victorian costume. Enjoy the smell of chestnuts roasting, mince pies and hot mulled wine, and the sound of hand bell ringers or local choirs singing carols, street theatre and perhaps a beautiful service in the majestic Cathedral. These are just some of the reasons people flock to this beautiful City at this special time of the year.

Our train departs Lincoln at 16.30, steam hauled again with the Duke, and retraces its steps back to York setting down as outwards. Our own Santa Claus and his elves will be making visits to our train with mulled wine, mince pies and presents for the children despite his busy schedule at this time of the year.

The Lincoln Christmas Fayre (http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t07/t1209b.htm) excursion has been subject to some changes.

The Duke of Gloucester has been replaced by LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0 no 45407 & BR Class 4MT 2-6-0 no 76079.

By the way, does anyone know where the watering point is mentioned for "Heeley Up Line" on the itinerary shown at the above Link?

Many thanks

I'm not connected with steam trains in any way, other than being fascinated by them, but found this page: The Railway Touring Co - The Lincoln Christmas Fayre (http://www.railwaytouring.co.uk/thelincolnchrist.html). Down the bottom is a Link to click on if you want to book tickets.

I couldn't afford it, so I'll just be waiting along it's route in the hope of capturing it on film!

Here's the official itinerary for The Lincoln Christmas Fayre excursion (http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t07/t1209b.htm).

I've made a note of the following as I'll be hoping to video the double-header as it goes past:

10:57am - Arriving at Sheffield Station from Rotherham
10:59am - Departing Sheffield Station for Chesterfield
11:07am - Stopping on Heeley Up Line for water
11:47am - Starting again on Heeley Up Line
12:03pm - Arriving at Chesterfield Station (via Dronfield Tunnel by Twentywell Lane)

6:07pm - Departing from Chesterfield Station for Sheffield
6:19pm - Arriving at Dore Station Junction
6:34pm - Arriving at Sheffield Station and stopping for water
7:12pm - Departing Sheffield Station for Rotherham

My dad and his brothers were major train spotters in the steam era, and used to observe trains from Hutcliffe Woods, the Abbey Lane road bridge, certain areas of Millhouses Park where you can get between the River Sheaf and the embankment chain-link fencing, Dore Station.......

Some of those locations aren't really suitable for photography due to fencing, trees or vantage points, but I suppose it depends on what kind of view you want. Abbey Lane road bridge at Beauchief would be a good one as the track's uphill with good visibility. Both engines will be labouring quite hard as it's all uphill from Sheffield Station to the Dronfield Tunnel.

Personally, I can't decide on Archer Road or Abbey Lane as a vantage point.

I think it's too late to book for tomorrow's excursion, but I can recommend the day trips organised by the Railway Touring Co. My wife and I enjoyed the "Cheshireman" tour from Cleethorpes (also Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Hatfield) to Chester and back on 17 November behind 60009 Union of South Africa. The tours are not cheap - they start at £69-£79 for a standard class seat, and for £90+ you get a first class seat including a morning snack and afternoon tea. If you want the full works, £159-£169 will give you a first class seat plus a (huge) English breakfast, light lunch and four-course dinner, all served at your seat. Children's fares are between about 60% and 75% of the full fare. The quality of the food served for the full meals is excellent, but the 12-coach train also includes a buffet car for takeaways. The coaching stock is 1950s ex-B.R., and very nostalgic for those of us who can remember steam-hauled trains (comfortably upholstered seats, windows that you can open, steam heating that you can turn up or down in each coach etc.) Only a few of the trips pick up at Sheffield or points nearby, but it's worth keeping an eye on the website for tours in the New Year - see http://www.railwaytouring.co.uk/

what time will it be passing through dronfield?

According to the schedule it should pass through Dronfield at about 11-55 am and 6-15 pm, but in my experience, good timekeeping is not these tours' strong point (for example, last month the Cheshireman was about 20 minutes late arriving in Chester, and about an hour late getting back to Cleethorpes).

Was this the train that was making steam (or whatever the proper phrase is!) at Sheffield this morning?

It was an impressive looking thing, and was billowing steam up and out over the road infront of the station.

I'm kicking myself!!!!

This morning, The Yorkshireman excursion (from St Albans to York and back) travelled from Chesterfield to Sheffield for water, and was due to arrive at Sheffield Station at 10:57am and departing towards Rotherham at 11:30am.

Grrrrrrr!!!! I've got to look more closely at these itineraries!

On it's way back it went via Treeton, Whittington and Chesterfield, bypassing Sheffield.

So annoyed I missed it. Then again, the weather was pretty poor. I just hope tomorrow improves a little.

The excursion today was scheduled to be the same two engines due tomorrow.

You can catch the 76 First bus from Lowedges to the bottom of Woodseats Road (I know that much).

The two engines are due to arrive at the watering point at 11:07am, and due to leave there at 11:47am. I assume they've allocated 20 minutes per tender.

I saw the Lancashire fusilier (I thnk it's name was) steaming up on Sheffield Train Station, today, around lunchtime whilst waiting for my train. I really enjoyed watching the trains with the steam and the noise!

It looked magnificent.

it brought back some happy memories of when I was a child, and my grandma lived on the Park Hill Flats. Her flat directly overlooked the train station, and, in those days the trees that were planted on the hillside between the flats and the station were only saplings, (god! How that makes me feel old! ) So, whenever the beautiful old steam trains like the Flying Scotsman, the Dutchess of Hamilton, and the Mallard visited Sheffield Station, we had the most fabulous view straight into the rail station.

I was a bit puzzled about why there was a second steam engine attached to the front of the Lancashire, though.

Hiya PT!

Sometimes they double-header the engines due to the load they're hauling, or the inclines/gradients involved.

hmm, thanks for that, Djeli, I was wondering, and suspected that might be the case, there are some big inclines on the route, so it makes a lot of sense.

My dad and his brothers were avid train spotters in the era of steam, and he's told me the incline from Sheffield Station to Dronfield Tunnel is quite steep, even though it doesn't look to be, so the engines will be labouring quite hard to get up there.

Should make for an impressive spectacle!

But in the steam days, it was rare to see double-headers in service. Has the incline got steeper? Or have passengers got fatter? :hihi:

I suspect that the train might be longer. The "Cheshireman" on 17 November consisted of 12 coaches - even with 60009 Union of South Africa on the front, there was also a diesel at the back. No prizes for guessing which one the customers preferred!

Yeah, I thought it was probably the number of coaches, really ;) But we were on the N. York Moors Railway this summer, and 60007 was pulling a dozen coaches unassisted. I have no idea what the gradients are like there, though :)

I don't know if this is relevant (probably not) but 71000 Duke of Gloucester (who was supposed to be hauling this excursion) has a top speed listed as 75mph. Engines 45407 Lancashire Fusilier and 76079 have top speeds listed as 60mph.

Also (and again, I don't know if this is relevant) 71000 Duke of Gloucester has a wheel arrangement of 4-6-2, whereas 76079 has 2-6-0 and 45407 Lancashire Fusilier has 4-6-0. Maybe this has an effect on their hauling capabilities?

I'm only 38, but grew up visiting museums like York and restored railways like the Watercress Line in Hampshire. I've even got a photo of me hugging the Mallard, and I don't care who knows it!

Steam engines have a grace and air of mechanical engineering that electric and diesel trains just don't have. I don't remember many electric and diesel engines being portrayed in artwork, on greetings cards or on chocolate boxes!

Now THAT's a grubby job. To think there are people out there who feel so passionately about these old engines that they do these jobs voluntarily. Without these enthusiasts, part of history will die forever.

I wonder how long it'll be before the EU bans steamers even on private lines due to emissions concerns? I hope that day never comes, cos I'll be the FIRST in the queue to slap 'em upside the head!

Steam trains can run late

Steam trains can run early

On one occasion a scheduled water loop at heeley loop (It is called heeley loop because the cross over was thre for the old heeley carriage sidings) was cancelled I it just ran down the main line so be warned .

sickly sweet childhood remininscence #10074 ...

We used to say the the noise of the steam and the sound of the train wheels on a steep incline were saying:

"canIdoit? ... canIdoit? ... canIdoit? ... canIdoit? ... canIdoit? ... canIdoit? IthinkIcan .. IthinkIcan .. IthinkIcan IthinkIcan IthinkIcan, Icandoit Icandoit IcandoitIcandoitYesIdidit!YesIdidit!YesIdidit!YesI didit!

getting faster and faster as it gets to the top and down the other side!

I wish I'd known about this earlier ... I'd deffo have gone down to take a look at it go by in all its glory.

Steam working times are officialy classified and can not be divulged however , in recent times they have been available on some websites such as above , however , these will be stopped if we continue to get the appaling amount of treaspass that occurs in some parts of the country (In cluding sheffield) when steam appears I am sure that all SF members will ensure they keep the legal side of the fence.

I'm horrified at the thought that some people would consider trespassing in order to get decent photos of steamers. It's never even crossed my mind! What irresponsible people! They'll just give the Government and EU a valid excuse for stopping all steamers on mainline tracks!

To be honest, I had intended parking in Sainsbury's car park to see her go by earlier, but felt so guilty I wrote out a shopping list so I'd be buying something from them too. Even though I managed to park legally on Archer Road, I still ended up in Sainsbury's shopping! :hihi:

It will certainly be worthwhile keeping an eye on the website. The Railway Touring Co's "Yorkshireman" on 24 March will evidently pass through Chesterfield, and one or more of this firm's other tours should pass through or near Sheffield. Surprisingly, their own website doesn't yet have details of 2008 tours - see http://www.railwaytouring.co.uk/

The photo taken from Archer Road certainly took me back to my trainspotting days. In 1960-62 my pals and I would finish school (King Edward's) and take the No 8 Inner Circle bus to Millhouses, where we would "bunk" the shed. On Tuesdays Thursdays and Sundays the engine for the "night sleeper" would be stabled there; it was always a Glasgow (Polmadie) engine and usually a "Clan" - this was as far south as the Clans got. I copped "Clan Stewart" there and once was disappointed to find a "Jubilee" - it was "Achilles". Then we would walk through the shed yard to "Millhouses & Ecclesall" station and buy a threepenny ticket to Sheffield Midland. An ex-LMS tank engine would turn up on a train from Chinley, and we would get into one of the ex-LMS suburban (slamdoor) coaches. The train would stop at Heeley on the way. All this seems a world away now. Memories...

I finished trainspotting seriously in September 1959, just before I started my last term at King Edwards. Never saw a Clan in Sheffield. I dont think, in the 50's they came further south than Leeds but I may be wrong. The only Patriot I ever saw in Sheffield was Derbyshire Yeomanry.

I work on the railways and I've never seen anything like that in my short career. Im not a spotter or anything but I can appreciate a piece of fine engineering and that was magnificent as it rolled past, when you're at ground level you truly get a good view as to the scale of these beasts. Much better than the usual modern rubbish we get!

I take it that as a result of that trauma you have never been the same since. What would you give to beable to walk into millhouses shed and see that line up of locos now - a sore ear

It was certainly unusual to see a Clan this far south. As you say they worked over the Settle-Carlisle line as far as Leeds, and down the West Coast Main Line on Glasgow-Manchester trains. Over here on the Glasgow-St Pancras route it was unusual for a train such as the one we called the "night sleeper" to change locos at Sheffield, and this arrangement only lasted for a couple of years before new diagrams came into use. Patriots and Scots were a rarity in Sheffield until diesels began to replace them on the West Coast Main Line and other routes. After about 1961 we used to see them in Sheffield, and I think 45536 Private W. Wood V.C. was shedded at Millhouses for about a year before the shed closed. Another Patriot often seen in Sheffield in the early 1960s was 45506 The Royal Pioneer Corps. The last passenger steam working into Sheffield was a train from Leeds that arrived around 7 p.m. behind a Jubilee from Holbeck. The engine then hauled a local train back to Cudworth - one "regular" on this working was 45593 Kolhapur. This arrangement ended with the new summer timetable in 1966.

I take it that as a result of that trauma you have never been the same since. What would you give to beable to walk into millhouses shed and see that line up of locos now - a sore ear

It wasn't long after that incident that my mother finally relented and let me go to Doncaster for my Saturday entertainment. No comparison with Millhouses sheds :D

I suspect that the train might be longer. The "Cheshireman" on 17 November consisted of 12 coaches - even with 60009 Union of South Africa on the front, there was also a diesel at the back. No prizes for guessing which one the customers preferred!

Is the deisel for train heating purposes ?

As I dont think there is any steam heat stock with a mainline cert

The Diesels are for extra oomph up gradients and are used as rescue trains in case they fail on the main line

I did wonder about the diesel at the back. I suppose that 60009 could easily pull 12 coaches, but unaided it might have been a bit slow on gradients going through the Pennines (the train took the route from Huddersfield to Manchester via Standedge Tunnel). I don't know what sort of heating was used, but it was very warm in our First Class coach, with heat apparently coming from under the seats. The coach must have been c. 1950s - it had a knob at each end for turning the heating up and down, and buttons for the lights in the vestibule. The doors had windows whose opening was adjusted with notches - they were not the really old type that had a strap with holes that engaged on a prong. The kichen car was Pullman stock.

according to my sources the newly built tonado steam engine is due to visit sheffield today (24th march). from what i was told it should arrive on platform 1 at midland station some time mid morning and after detaching from it's coaching stock it will shunt into platform 7 where it will stay for a while. it will be a rare opportunity to see a steam engine in midland station.

Hi All

I note several transport enthusiasts keep the Sheffield public up to date with steam trains coming through South Yorkshire to events. However, I was wondering if there are still tours being arranged from our area as I want to get my folks a 50th wedding anniversary on a steam train trip with first class/silver service dinner thrown in. Have searched the internet but most tours start in Leeds or Manchester. This would ideally be required this summer July or August and first class dining is a must. Scarborough as a destination would be great too as this is where they had their honeymoon.

Would appreciate some advise and whats peoples experience of this type of trip.

There is nothing listed that fits your criteria, there are few if any dining trains that stop in sheffield .

You want this trip in august so there fore I sugest you book with the scarborough spa express this does york - harrogoate - leeds - york - scarborough - york - leeds harrogate - york . This is steam but without dinnning I sugest you go to leeds by train then steam to scarborough then choose somewhere for a meal

hope this helps

Not quite the same thing, but how about Peak Rail between Rowsley and Matlock. It's only a short line, but they do do dining cars. Infact, I'm going on one Sunday in July. The steamer will be travelling the line from Rowsley to Matlock and back - twice.

If you do choose Peak Rail, book ASAP as they get booked up very quickly.

It finally arrived in Sheffield a little after 3 o'clock. Not sure what caused the delay but it gave me an excuse to have a beer (or two) in the Sheffield Tap while I waited!

Bit of confusion at first andyrad ? Bittern was mentioned, but then of course looking at the pix it was Dominion of New Zealand. Great pictures by the way !

Some questions for you Anoracks

Where is Dominion of New Zealand usually stabled ?

Has Bittern been preserved, if so, where is that usually stabled ?

the Flying Scotsman stopped running in 2006 but I did see it when I used to work at Acorn Business Park on Woodseats Road, so to answer your question yes you may have seen it in the past.

For anyone who didn't get to see it you can go and visit it in York Museum.

Most steam tours and most steam loco movements but not all as some are kept quiet until after/ some are changed/ some are cancelled.

Where the info is in the public people do put the times where known on here . Keep an eye on this forum.

Alot of the steam specials now go via the back line so they can be serviced at barrow hill round house

Looking through the list there is none listed for this line

I was at work on Fred Mulley road, I do like my steam locomotives and the duchess class being my particular favourite, was a very welcome surprise to see her and hear her. The strange thing is I took one of my model locomotives to Olivias Trains today for some custom detailing and the demonstration model they showed me was the 'Duchess of Sutherland' .

Oh what a lovely picture, I was born and lived on Princess Street (in the background of this picture), I used to look out of my bedroom window to see the trains and wave to the passengers. It's hard to believe that we were so close to the track but I never noticed the noise, happy days

Fred Dibnnah, and pete waterman would have loved these steam loco's on full power, i am lucky enough to have lived through the 50/60s all my family worked on the railway untill dr beeching got his grubby hands on it and decided to close it down, just as he was tod to do.
if he had left it alone we could be moving hundreds of tons of freight on rails instead of clogging up thee motorways and A roads, not forgetting country roads, and they wouldn't be full of pot holes like now. even eddie stowbards buit hiis own railway not forgetting his air line. getting back to the old duch i would have loved to have seen her
