thanks venger, just had a look and if i want a xfx card its helpful, but back to my original q is ati or nvidea best and what would be wrong with either one?
i am after a new machine and normally i go for nvidea but am i ruling out ati radeon cards unneccesarily, obviously i am not going to get a machine with integrated graphics!!

It really depends on your budget and what the rest of your components are...
give me info and I can give you more info...
but as a basic rule, if you go top of the range with either it wont make much difference unless the rest of your PC is pretty poop, then the Nvidia will be slightly better because the new Nvidias are not as CPU dependant as the latest ATI's are.
One advantage ATI have is that they don't slow down nearly as much as Nvidia when it comes to anti-alaising and ansiotropic filtering at higher resolutions.
Nvidia have an advantage in the fact that they have better support for OpenGL in their drivers, thus they generally gain a bit more performance with OpenGL games.
Anyways, what games do you play? what games do you plan to play? and what will the specs of the rest of your system be?

You need to give more information, such as your specs and the money you want to spend and games you want to run.
If its a new comp, then the new nvidia cards are coming out infront of the ati ones.I would also go PCI express. Think carefully as to whether you really need to spend £400 on a top fo the range one.

thanks, i am getting a replacement box, mine ate its os the other day as a hint its getting old and was looking at which card to go for in the system, generally in the past i have gone the nvidea route but just wanted to check that i wasnt missing out on the ati ones which seem to be popular in new machines also
games we play??
kids are into roller coaster tycoon and sims2
wife into the myst series and that kind of game which can be occasionally memory and cpu hungry and uses quite a bit of 3d work
we have a 17" lcd which i aint replacing, just getting the box
