Hi, can anyone tell me what Tinsley is like?I am moving there on Saturday so it's too late to do anything about it if it's a bad area - but at least I can be prepared!

Thanks

As far as I know, it has quite a large Indian community, a lot of industry and one of the worst air qulity problems in the country arond where the M1 roundabout is.

Here is a Forum archive which might help a little more than me! (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread/t-23737.html)

If you can I would try and move somewhere else. I have friends who lived there and they found it quite intimidating at times, that and the previously mentioned pollution made it a pretty unpleasant place to live.

It's a nice little house and the street seemed nice enough or I wouldn't have gone for it.

I've signed a contract now so I have to stay for at least 6 months.

Oh well we'll all die of something anyway I suppose :(

Perhaps one of these airfilter/ionisers will help - and don't open your windows. Sunbathing isn't popular at this time of year, so I don't suppose you'll be sitting out in the garden much ;)

I thought the rent was a lot cheaper than other areas, but didn't think too much of it, and was just glad to get a 'good' deal :( :( :(

although you've signed a 6 month's contract surely you're not bound to it, the same way the landlord isn't bound to it. you could give one month's notice to quit, couldn't you?

Six months basically gives you time to check out other areas, save some cash and settle in. Polution is worse in the summer so might not be such a problem at the moment. Anyway, you might find it's ok. :)

I have now moved into the house and it doesn't seem too bad at all.

Maybe I'll change my mind when I get lung cancer or something in 6 months :) i'll keep you posted

Dont really want to upset anyone but wasn't there so much trouble caused by gangs in Tinsley that the Pike & Heron was closed.

I was shocked :o to see that Tinsley had Air pollution warnings on its roads. Saturday was the first i knew of this.

Carmina, i doubt you will have any long term health effects if you leave the area within 6 months. I would start looking now, and do as others said, keep windows closed.

In response to the original question,
'What is Tinsley like'
I woud guess it to be like a cross between The Bronx and Chernobyl

Yeah thanks very much for all your comments :o It doesn't seem too bad so far - maybe the street we're in isn't so bad. It can't all be terrible

I have now been living in Tinsley for just over a month and I have to say I can't see what all the fuss was about. It's not the sexiest place on earth to live but so far all the people I live close to have been friendly and neighbourly.

There is an incredible amount of wildlife in the area despite the pollution and the street I live on is very quiet.

Nowt wrong with Tinsley. Great contrast of City and country experiences.

Leave the world behind as you go along the canal and the TPT up to the bird sanctuary next to the Magna Science Park.

Go the other way and get to Centertainment and World class sports venues.

Brannigans is much better than "The Bluebell".

If the Tinsley roundabout had some decent fly junctions it would be better.

We lived in Tinsley for 2 and a half years and never had a spot of trouble. We had a lovely little terrace on a quiet road, with nice neighbours. The view wasn't great out of the window, but it suited our needs at the time.

Yes the pollution was bad, it made the windows filthy but it happens every where.

Sometimes you see the police, but i feel that its good to see their presence in the area. I know of a lot worse places in Sheffield.

We've now rented our house out to a lovely couple as its so close to the motorway etc it made sense to let it out than sell it. We might need it one day.

I hope everyone who moves to Tinsley has just a good experience as we did.

Ah yes - Tinsley, Sheffield 9. Not really the area I'd choose if I were to move to Sheffield; after having the joys of visiting a friend there, one trip was quite enough to an area that is full of crime and disorder.

The demographic population of those types of areas will continue to claim that it's "getting better", or "not as bad as it was". In reality, mud sticks.

Weren't there asian youths rioting down there a few years ago and the Pike and Heron had to closed after threats were made to it and some of the shops,
Also isn't it one of the most polluted areas in the UK because of it's proximity to the M 1.
On the plus side its near to Magna & Meadowhall

Hello Guys, I live in Brinsworth next to Tinsley and that is a really lovely area.
Before buying in Brinsworth my partner and I looked at a property for sale in Tinsley down a pleasent little street near the BOC place and that was lovely.
I think that end of Tinsley is fine, still in walking distance to the Fairways pub in Brinsworth which is lovely and have good live music on Thursday nights aswell.

The pollution should improve over the next few weeks as Outo Kumpu start ceasing rolling. It should all be finished by mid-April so that'll take some of the heavy metal out of the atmosphere. (Berylium and rhodium not Meatloaf and Iron Maiden)

I live in Tinsley above the park and have a great view over the Don Valley.

Its been very quiet over the last few years afer lots of hard work has gone into promoting neighbourly values. The young lads of the area make a name for themselves but thats what they do at that age.

After being all over the UK and most of Europe, I dont think Im missing anything returning back to Tinsley. Its the same as anywhere else.

I have set up a new website for the area called www.sheffield9.net

Did you stay or go after your 6 month stint? Was it as bad as people made out?

Im getting all sorts of negative comments about my proposed move to the Manor, and will post when I know the truth. I hope you will post again about your experiences in Tinsley.
