View Full Version : The jewish people - actual race of people? kirky 27-01-2005, 10:25 are they an actual race of people or a religious group,i keep hearing on the news about the polish jew,the german jews, dutch jews etc.....where did they they originally come from. DaBouncer 27-01-2005, 10:30 Jewish I would say (happy to stand corrected tho) is a religion but we refer to people of the Jewish faith as Jews. So it kinda crossed over from religion to race, similar to Muslim. Muslim is a religion rather than a race, but we refer to people who follow that faith as Muslims - again crossing over to a race type of reference. However I'm happy to be proved otherwise if I am incorrect. alchemist 27-01-2005, 10:32 Originally posted by kirky are they an actual race of people or a religious group,i keep hearing on the news about the polish jew,the german jews, dutch jews etc.....where did they they originally come from. from an area called Judah in the middle east dave Siān 27-01-2005, 10:39 I'm no expert either - so like Dabouncer I'm happy to be corrected but I thought that whilst once Jews were once a race (in Biblical times) that since the Diaspora (when Jews were exiled from their own land) that was no longer the case & that these days Judaism is a religion nomme 27-01-2005, 10:45 For more information than you probably want: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew Nomme NatalieSheff 27-01-2005, 10:51 its also seen as a culture, bit like islam i suppose nick2 27-01-2005, 12:26 What is a "race" anyway, a group from a certain place, with a certain physical characteristics, a certain religion, a certain language ? Edit: Oops! now I see what Wikipedia is. Anyone can edit or add Not necessarily the best reference then? kilauea 27-01-2005, 14:32 I looked this up recently as I found myself asking the same question. From what I could work out they are an actual race, but as a lot of their documented "history" is taken from the bible I have problems believing a lot of what they take as fact. Such as the whole exodus business for instance. I am not by the way in any way anti-semitic and don't wish to cause anybody any offense, especially today. craigb 27-01-2005, 14:34 IMHO there is only one race.... the human one. Unfortunately the majority of people seem to want to split that into all these sub-categories? Never did understand that personally sccsux 27-01-2005, 15:37 Originally posted by craigb IMHO there is only one race.... the human one. Though I like the sentiment. Phanerothyme 27-01-2005, 16:00 Originally posted by cgksheff Did you scan down this page to "Jewish Culture" They've been Hacked!! Edit: Oops! now I see what Wikipedia is. Anyone can edit or add Not necessarily the best reference then? Well yes they can, but if no consensus is acheived, that part of the topic stays in discussion, until someone else triggers another discussion on any topic. If you read the actual discussions behind each entry you can see how the entry was arrived at. It's a fluid thing, but you can be sure that a lot of the contentious topics on wikipedia are backed by lengthy and extremely well informed debate (in a lot of cases at any rate). Which is not to be confused with a state of aggression. That'll be Israel. |
