View Full Version : Being made redundant and entitlements.
pinnacle 26-10-2007, 22:21 ive been made redundant today and would like to know exactly what i am entitled to?
Im sure someone on here will know for definitely what i am due?
Can you help?
dan_999uk 26-10-2007, 22:25 As far as I know, your statutory entitlement depends how long the company has employed you for. There may be a further allowance in your contract.
pinnacle 26-10-2007, 22:27 ive been there 3.5 years
dan_999uk 26-10-2007, 22:30 See here (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/RedundancyAndLeavingYourJob/DG_10029836) - Government website with redundancy calculator.
From what i understand you should be given 3.5 weeks notice and the minimum amount you should receive will be 3.5 weeks pay. Your contract may stipulate something differnt so check that. You are also entitled to time off for interviews.
I've not dealt with redundancy for a while so I could be wrong.

Are you in a union? They should be your first port of call, if so.
Nooooooo!
I have been made redundant!
Can anyone advise me on this tragic process. Thank you x x x
Sorry to hear that. If you have a union, now would be a good time to get in touch with them.
sTaGeWaLkEr 08-11-2007, 18:04 Seek advice from Citizens Advice Bureau asap.
They will be able to help you in terms of making sure you know how much you're entitled to in relation to pay/holiday pay/pay in lieu of notice etc.
They will also look at whether the company has acted in accordance with regulations.
You may find the advice on the DTI website (http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/page15686.html)useful.

It could be the making of you. I got made redundant in 2004 when my company closed down the Sheffield call centre and moved operations to India. As I'd been there several years I got a five figure redundancy payout so spent nearly a year off work just walking, cycling and being idle.
I now have a much better job in the rail industry that pays more and is much more satisfying - in short redundancy isn't always a bad thing and can often force you out of the comfort zone when you've been in a dull job too long.
sezemeseeds 09-11-2007, 10:00 unions are rubbish. was in one for years and when we got made redundant they did nothing. its very upsetting getting made redundant. you stability of you future comes crashing down and there is nothing you can do about it. its like a death. you have to grieve it. give it a few weeks then get yourself back out there. you may find that you get a job much better than the one you had. its hard I know but hang in there.
pinnacle 09-11-2007, 10:06 I was made redundant two weeks ago, i could take them to a tribunal but i cant be bothered. Been there, done that before, its a ball ache. Im now concentrating more on my own business which i started about a year ago (see signature!!)
It could be the making of you!!
Quick start stealing stationary!!!!!!!!!
seriously claire- sorry to hear that! but i agree with basil- sell everything and go and travel the world for a while, you will never regret it!
hels1977 09-11-2007, 10:27 Sorry to hear that but I agree, it can work out really well, did for me anyhow! Not much point contacting a union unless you feel you've been unfairly treated. or have reason to believe that it's not being done "correctly". Being made redundant in itself usually isn't in my limited experience (although I'm sure others would disagree based on their experience). Sometimes business shrink as well as expand and I guess we mere employees can't expect them to keep staff on that they can't afford to pay or no longer have enough work for sadly.
Time to take life by the thingies and do something you've always wanted to do, travel, start your own business etc. I hope things work out well for you :)
Edited to add: Do go to the CAB though, just in case somethings a foot.
chris@25 09-11-2007, 10:53 I was made redundant 10 years ago, and once I got over the shock and looked round for jobs I found a better job than the one I'd had. If I hadn't been made redundant I'd probably have stayed in the first, rubbish, job for ages. So try and stay positive, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
bubbly_bird8 09-11-2007, 11:23 i can;t help you but im sorry to hear about it!
Smithster 09-11-2007, 12:37 I took voluntary redundancy at the beginning of this year and it was one of the best things I ever did. I took a pay-off which was only the statutory amount but I found a job with much better conditions and working hours, and I now have my sanity back. It made me realise how much of a comfort zone I had fallen in to and that making the jump to a new career is nowhere near as daunting as it can often seem to be.
Don't stress. It may seem like the bottom has fallen out of your world right now but it only seems that way. You have to look for the positive in any situation, no matter how dire it may appear. You never know... this could be the best thing to ever happen to you.
I was made redundant a few weeks ago. I've only just started looking for another job as i've enjoyed having a few weeks off and playing about with my redundancy money etc

i was made redundant back in july due to the floods and although im not yet working again.... i no longer see it as tragic... yep i was peeeeed about it and had all the rants etc... but since ive left ive had time to think about what i want to do, get the training and with any luck the next job may be the making of me ... fingers crossed.
chin up..... Be optimistic... Think Positively!!!
Quite important, has the company explained to you why you have been chosen ahead of others?

They used a worthless points score where they can simply score one person ahead of any other.
To be honest i dont care now. Ive already realised it was the making of me, i now work when i like and have already made more money working for myself in 4 weeks than i would do working 4 months with them.
My advise would be without a doubt work for yourself if you can.
