i am just starting out on this

my new computer says dvd rw on it , so my question is .....

can i only use blank dvd that say dvd-rw ??

i am looking on e-bay , but i want to get the right ones , and still i am a bit confused , so best to seek advice before buying

You can use WORM (Write Once, Read Many) DVD disks (either +r or -r (dependant on the DVD RW), DVD-RW or CD (WORM or CDRW).

Try using the drive info tool that comes with Nero (if you have it).

you can use dvd -r or dvd +r or if yuo want to reuse them you need dvd rw

Hi Sharon.

With blank DVDs there's 2 competing formats, + and - R and RW, R means you can only burn on them once, and RW means Re-Writeable. There's been a battle between + and - type discs for years, with varying results although most people reckon the - type is better for video and stuff.

Quick tip though, don't buy second hand discs on eBay, you can get blank DVDs dirt cheap for like £7 for a pack of 5 from most computer shops and even some Supermarkets.

From a personal viewpoint though you're better off paying a bit more for better quality discs than buying cheapo ones, in my experience the cheaper discs tend to break after a couple of uses.

Yeah you can still use the R ones, you're better off with RW though then you can re-use the disc after you've burnt whatever onto it, with DVD-R you can only burn once and that's it.

TBH They're pretty much the same these days. I've been using cheap CDR/DVD+/-R/W for years, and have never had a problem (even when copying old CDs onto DVD).

i use rw discs for backing data up....then when i add more to the folder i can wipe the disc and reburn the freshly added to stuff again.

i use r discs for whatever i want to keep properly...music, films, etc etc

my dvd drive plays both +r,rw and - r,rw discs, if you have nero burning rom installed it has a little program called info tool...fire that up and itll tell you about your puter including what formats your drive will play / record to (ticks next to the ones it will)

i prefer v6 to v7 - less bells and whistles, makes it easy to use

nero 6.6 is still apparently the best version.

unless you have vista then even 7 with the patches doesnt work perfectly still?

i agree, ive got nero 8 is it just me or does it take about a week to load
