I went out tonight to After dark to try photographing fireworks for the first time. Someone told me that panning F1 was hard, well I thought fireworks was harder. Quite a few of us must have been out over the past few days so let me know what you think of my attempts, how I could have done better and show us some of yours.
here's what I got...

Wow! They're gorgeous! I especially like the one with blue sparks coming out, that's my favourite! Nothing wrong with any of them far as I can see, just crop the last picture that's all, but apart from that, they're great!!

It's not that difficult... well, it wasn't last time i tried (when i was about 14!). S'pose it depends how far away you stand! :)

fireworks ... let me know what you think of my attempts

Some really good ones there. Most impressive.

Taken with a Point-and-press, or SLR? (or indeed, somewhere inbetween)

Thanks for your comments, I enjoyed taking them and would really like to have another go to see if I can improve. Quite disappointed I didn't manage to capture one of those big chrysanthimum ones but ho hum.
Ash, Moonlight I used a Sony A100 with a 75 - 300, F11, manual focus on bulb setting for between 2 and 6 seconds.
Also Moonlight if you look at the photo album in my sig the panned motor sport pics are there, (ok not all F1 but still bloomin fast)

Thanks hockeybear and thanks *ash*
The photos i took on 06/11/07 are of a display in Heeley, they were taken from my back door overlooking town.
So all my shots are taken from a distance looking down, that's one of the reasons that their's a big difference between hockeybears photos and mine.
The other being I don't own an SLR :(

So here's the rest of my shots folks ............... Firework Display (http://www.sheffieldphotos.com/main.php?g2_itemId=3016)

Well I thank you ProPix, I was quite surprised at the results of my fireworks display photos.
As on the evening before the display was scheduled i took some test shots, and out of about fifty frames THIS (http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1575/7742919/18254536/290114993.jpg) was my best :(
So on the next evening i was well pleased. :)

Stop putting .. Ideas (http://www.sheffieldphotos.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3344) into my head *_ash_*, with all those cranes scattered around the City center they have to be up to summet so perhaps this is the next proposal :hihi:.
'The smoke looking thing on the right'?
fireworks, a bonfire in a garden and in the distance are the lights on the tram track at Park Grange Road.
Hope that helps.:)

:hihi: Quality edit. :hihi:

I see now that it's a crane, I have my brightness very low on screen, and it looks weird darkened.

It's never to late to put a fantastic shot like that up, and that background/forground makes it top notch.

Thanks me-and-pippo. You've got some pretty good shots yourself.
This was my first attempt at taking fireworks with a digital camera so I'm pretty happy with the results, if not with the relatively slow reaction time of the camera.
I'm more used to using a manual medium format film camera that gives the photographer more control and instantaneous response times.
However, now that the nights have drawn in I shall look forward to taking more night time shots using slow shutter speeds with my bridge camera.
