My nominations are:
1) XL Fisheries at Wickersley - never found any fish and chips better than these and I've tried a lot.

2) Lily's Bakery - Penistone rd. - Meat & potato pie chips, peas and gravy to die for.

There's a huge great long thread on 'best chippy' so can it be just the others? Chinese, Indian etc?

It depends where you live really,
You will always find a decent one wherever you live, and everyone likes different things.
I live in Dinnington and have 6 or 7 to choose from, some do pizzas better, some do burgers better, its nice to have a choice.

Is there anywhere in sheffield that does cripsy chips rather than soggy ones. Sorry all those from yorkshire, but I prefer my crispy chips from the west midlands!

Hario's at Hillsborough is grand. They do proper tasty pizzas and a corking collection deal: 2 x 10" pizzas for £5.99.

Gets my vote when we feel lazy!

Big up to the Broomhill Balti King from me! (and no, I'm not a student)

Consistently the best on personal experience.

Special mention for Everest too on Chessie road of course. Top spot.

err, balti king, the best, you need to get out more. Balti king is the fun drunken place to go, but their curries are awful, esp, when busy.

There really can't be an Indian takeaway anywhere in the UK to beat Bilash on Sharrowvale Road.

I did say on _personal_ experience. They did try and put me off by having Vinnie Jones feature on some promotional material, but the food still hit the spot so that was ok.

Can't say I have ever eaten there stone-cold-sober, but at the same not always sozzled when I go there either - always seems good to me. Only slight criticism tends to be food comes out a little _too_fast_ sometimes [i.e. suspiciously so] - but the taste usually sound. There you go.

Its good when you're drunk, but when you want some quality it's not the right place to go. Mangla is good, so is the one on sharrowvale rd already mentioned. Elif's top kebabs too. Not sure of best pizza or chinese takeaway (close to city centre anyway).

On reflection I have to agree. Mangla is amazingly cheap yet still hits the spot quality-wise too. Glad someone else has mentioned Elif ! Kebabs have such a stigma attached to them, but as anyone else who's sampled the delights of Elif will tell you, the food from there truly is superb. "Proper" kebabs for sure .. just go easy on the garlic and chilli sauce LOL.

All this talk of food is making me hungry :|

Suprised this has not been mentioned but New India Garden on Chesterfield Road has the best quality Chicken I have ever tasted.

I am always sober when I eat there to.

I get drunk afterwards :)

Everest is good as well.

Indian = Mangla - just has to be, Good food, cheap and a pub across the road to grap a drink between courses.

Pizza in town = Murdochs - it been there for years and no friday night out would be the same without it.

Chinese = Rainbow on white lane - the best for years and then some.

Memories of Kashmir on Bradfield Road, Hillsborough has absolutely fantastic quality curries if you go for one off the Chef's Specials list. It's not dirt cheap but still good value; for about £6 you'll get a great curry with choice of rice and a chapati.

Personal favourite is:

Kari Gosht (lamb) with mushroom fried rice.

Great people in there too. Take away only though....for eating in agree Mangla is the best.

Elinas on Sharrow Vale Road is fab but the best Indian take away is Tak Dir, Delish!!

technophobe
16-03-2005, 12:37
Mangla is great but a little scarey considering where is located!!

I think New India Garden is fab and also Tak Dir...

Worst curry believe it or not was in Islamabad, Pakistan, it was like meat soup!!! yuk the very thought of it makes me want to gip!! :gag:

For chinese I really like Canton Orchard at Fulwood, although its not a takeaway and is quite expensive.

Top Wok at Dronfield does great chinese food and is reasonable priced. Comes in those little boxes too which adds to my liking..

Heh, they've been using that same promotion since I first came to uni in Sheffield (now in my 3rd year). Balti King's bearable for pre/post-drink munch, but the portions are tight and the meat is a bit iffy. Plus loads of my mates complain that everything's too hot, bloody southerners eh?! ;)

Taste of Kashmir on Barber Road, Crookesmoor used to be good, gone a bit downhill lately though :suspect:

Sun Yee (chinese) on Crookes Road is good, and pretty cheap.

Danomms on Abbeydale Road is nice aswell & cheap, they do some good offers like buy 1 pizza get another for £1.

Indian = Rajputs on Commonside
Chinese = Golden Lee on London Road
Chippy = Admiral on Crookes

Better off getting pizza from supermarket and sticking in the oven for 10 mins.

Another vote for Bilash. In fact, I'm off there now.

Not only is the food excellent, the service is brilliant - they're really polite and also it's VERY inexpensive - perfect proof you don't have to pay a premium for good food.

I also echo comments about Balti King. Put simply, the place is garbage.

agreed with the admiral, although the chips aren't quite what they were a year ago, a change of oil required perhaps.

Also has anyone noticed Rajputs has a sign outside proundly boasting its the number 1 takeaway in commonside... not much competition is there???

Anyone remember the "ISLAMABAD" curry house down the cliffe it was the first in sheffield.

Probably not so ask your Ma or Pa !!!!!

A bloke named Sofi had it and they used to sell this kind of leaf with grated nut wrapped in it which you chewed on after your meal to clean your teeth & breath, you didn't swallow it , just chewed & then spit it out.

Them were the days, proper cooks, cooking proper curries.

The BALTI PALACE Firth Park do a nice Bhuna and the mixed kebab .......... luverly jubberly
