View Full Version : White Peugeot police car...
Has anyone else noticed the white Peugeot 307 police car that seems to constantly cruise around Sheffield centre? It's virtually unmarked apart from two stickers on the doors. Every time I see it, it's filled with 2 big (i.e. bouncer sized ;)) policemen. Any idea who or what it is? Anyone else seen it?
Possibly an armed response unit. I've a feeling there are a couple in town that are unmarked, (I could be wrong though).
I didn't think those guys cruised around? The car I'm thinking of seems to constantly be around West Street, Division Street and those roads between the Moor and Peace Gardens.

Interesting...I thought they only drove round in marked Volvo estates (for the sniper rifle to fit in, you understand...)
Agent Orange 05-09-2003, 12:52 Armed response drive around usually in a Volvo estate, a bit like the ones the traffic cops use. They, in fact, need an hefty car I do believe to car their equipment ie guns etc.
As for the virtually unmarked car, I've seen it while out on my lunch, but I have no idea why it has the markings it does or what it's purpose is. Maybe, due to budgetery cuts, South Yorkshire Police can't afford to have their cars made up with all the signs and stickers anymore!!
Lindseyw 05-09-2003, 12:55 Yup I know what you mean, and no it's not an ARV it's just an unmarked car - usually used for clerical transportation, and there are two.

Clerical transportation? The guys inside the car I keep seeing are huge - like the ones they send in to riots! Are they just carrying files with them? :o
theres loads of those "unmarked..hardly" cars at crystal peaks police station!
some even are sponsored by crystal peaks shopping center
Lindseyw 05-09-2003, 14:16 They are runaround type things - defo not ARV's
I would hazard a guess that these are cars for police that haven't reached a sufficient driving grade to use their woo-woos yet. But that is just a guess.

Erm, would have been a great guess if it wasn't for the fact that when I saw one it was hurtling throught town with siren blazing!!
Maybe they use them to try and keep a low profile so that they are seen to be not using aggressive police tactics in the fight against crime???!
Perhaps they're rounding up women for the inspector !!!!!
If it was in town, it may have been a viper unit. They tend to use unmarked cars, mainly peugeots. They also tend to recruit from the bulkier end of cops.
Must be the drug squad, as the police are clamping down on this at the moment because it is the cause of a lot of violent crime.
Are these guys in Uniform or plain clothes?

there is also a volvo with the same markings, often used for driver training and checking or as chase vehicle in training, poss 2 volvos and at least 4 peugeots
1Man&hisBMW 10-09-2003, 04:17 Hello folks - first post on the forum!
I think you are referring to the White Peugeot 307, which I think is originally stationed at Woodseats PS.
Mostly out friday/sat/sun evenings - personally I think the officers in the car are fully trained, but don't want to provoke anything, and are there in the city just to keep an eye on this in a somewhat stealthy manner.
i would hazard a guess that they are police tht are either townones that only use small cars because its busy in town or they might be training drivers :o (more likely) or they as some one else said an an undercover unit which dont want to spotted (well thats the police for u init)
Just saw said white police car on Devonshire Street. One big policeman standing by the bonnet holding some shouting guy onto it with one hand, and chatting casually about getting some backup on his radio with his other.
Maybe it's for supercops.
1Man&hisBMW 12-09-2003, 20:44 they are the Police's version of the stealth bomber! Problem with sheffield is if a crim in the city centre sees a big jam sandwich coming with the rozzers flashing, he is likely to hide or run into one of the many little streets especially around the Devonshire area.
they are CID, seem to be getting more and more recently.
Lindseyw 19-09-2003, 13:33 They are a as I said ages ago it is a sort of Admin car. Also it is a cart that is left in the station and used as a last resort...nobody wants to take them out. I asked my mate at the start of this discussion who is a bobby.
ah, well CID must use them sometimes as one of my mates got approached by some once in a case of mistaken identity.

Why doesn't anybody want to take them out? They are new cars - Pug 307's infact, similar or better to the other Panda cars on the beat. Maybe they don't like its "stealthiness"!

I think its community officers (they do have blue lights on the top) as they hurtle up Parsons Cross one behind the other most evenings. Likely tackling this ASBO commitment.

I'm pretty sure that alcohol causes most of the violent crime in Sheffield.
Don't forget that it is the stupid drug laws which create drug gang violence in the first place. It's not the drug users who get violent, it is (the often straight) dealers.

I don't understand where you are coming from with this post.
It's just like saying it's stupid gun laws that creates drive-by shootings.
I would like to think that the drug squad would certainly ideally prefer to target the dealers rather than users
wearetherobots 29-10-2003, 17:22 I'm just stating the fact that drugs themselves (with the exeption of alcohol) do not cause a violent reaction in the user.
The 'drug' violence that was spoken of is actually 'criminal' violence between drug dealers. To blame it on drugs would be silly. Should drugs ever become legal these same violent people will be using their skills to rob banks.
Drugs and violence just do not go together in my opinion.
Ridiculous drug laws and violence however do go hand in hand.

I concur. Legalise the lot and start paying tax on them.
How you go about leglaising them is a lot easier said than done. It's not sure to elimate crime or the dealer entirely.
fnkysknky 29-10-2003, 22:44 Someone told me ages ago that they are for the special constables (volunteers) as she was one herself. Suppose they might use them for other things too though?
This thread is about the white police car, please keep it on topic :(
I will get in touch with my contact at the SY police and see what he has to say regarding this car. I think Lindsey may be referring to a different car as this one is certainly not an admin car (out late at night, always two fully "kitted out" policeman etc. etc.)

As far as I am aware Special Constables don't go out alone. They always have an experienced officer with them. I can't see why they would require an unmarked police car in any case.
