View Full Version : How Do You Knit...
gina2007 02-11-2007, 17:52 Might Sound So Silly (lol)
I'm pregnant and in desperate need for somthing to keep me busy, so was just wondering..
How do you knit?
My nan can't teach me cause her arm's are all messed up and can't lift them up now :S (Don't know why...)
But...any fellow forumer's, who'd like to give me a guide if that's possible...
Then some nice little blankets and socks for my child might be on the way! :D
Thank You In Advancee

Plain Talker 02-11-2007, 17:58 the Wool Baa at Hunters Baa I mean "Hunters Bar"does classes, where you can learn to knit, if that's any help!
gina2007 02-11-2007, 18:02 If it was in hillsborough...or near s6 then i'd have gone but hunters bar is miles away! :( Thankyou anyway!
knitbird 02-11-2007, 18:19 If you can get to the city centre there's lessons at John Lewis, (free) give them a call and book a place! If you really can't get anywhere, then get yourself a copy of stitch and bitch (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stitch-Bitch-Handbook-Instructions-Generation/dp/0761128182/ref=cm_lmf_img_3_rsrssi1/026-5520035-3186843) or something similar, and teach yourself.
gina2007 02-11-2007, 18:35 Thank You for that! Would I sound silly though, i'm only young and people stereotype on knitters being like oldies?
gina2007 02-11-2007, 18:35 Oh No offence to people who are like only in their 30's/40's and so on who knit!! I'm 16, so everyones old to me!
Lucy-Lastic 02-11-2007, 18:38 Hi Gina - Welcome to the group! Id recommend trying to get to one of the classes (either Wool Baa or John Lewis ones) - I learn so much better watching how its done than reading a book! There is a bus from Hillsborough to Eccleshall Rd - 82 I think which is good for the Wool Baa. I did learn from the Debbie Bliss How to Knit book, but since then have found Knitting Help (http://www.knittinghelp.com/) which is a fantastic resource full of videos of how to do most of what you need to learn. There is also a thread close to the top which has a lot of links including others which have video which you might find useful.
gina2007 02-11-2007, 18:48 Thank you! Great Help :D
Congratulations Gina!
If you can get to the Wool Baa at some point, Jill would make you very welcome!
The ladies in John Lewis are great too.
Some of the local libraries have knitting classes during the day, so it might be worth checking out to see if they do any in Hillsborough or Walkley.
Wool4brains 02-11-2007, 19:21 There are lots of young knitters about, well they are young to me but I suppose they might be old to you. I started knitting when I was younger than you and no-one thought it was strange then (although ladies of the older variety did tend to take my knitting off me to show me how to do it properly). I find videos more helpful than books, there are loads on Utube on knitting (and spinning). Ask your Nann if she's still got her needles, chances are she might have a spare bit of wool too and that will be enough to get you started.
littleblue 02-11-2007, 19:36 Apparently I'm no longer young, but perhaps I can fall into the ¨younger¨ catagory.
And knitting is amazing :D
I started knitting when I was pregnant. I first tried with books, I couldn't do it. Then I went to John Lewis for the free lesson and after the first one, I could then understand the books better. Also, if I'm stuck on how to do something, I find videos on the internet to help. I've found one then helped with purl and stuff. This lady is quite good for learning from http://hobbies.expertvillage.com/videos/straight-needles.htm and these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RiFyvL6NHk (they don't say anything, but you can see clearly what they are doing) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3A4BUz3Xgs (this is in a foreign language, but again, you can see what they are doing clearly).
Hope this helps.
First, congratulations!
If you're in Hillsborough, have you tried asking the ladies at Craftastic on Dixon Road? They're really nice and there seems to be at least one person who knows about each type of craft there! :hihi:
I've just taught myself using the "Stitch and Bitch" book, and the internet, but it's complicated by the fact that I'm left handed and just can't do it right handed!
I'm 24 so am classed as a 'younger' knitter although to be honest, I don't even think of the people on here and the knitters I have met in terms of age...it just doesn't seem to matter when you all have a hobby in common! Congratulations! I taught myself to knit 3 years ago from a couple of books I got from Hobbycraft, but the internet is a fabulous resource - try the knitting help website that lisaH linked to :)
Hello there, I'm a young 37 year old knit-ter! Congrats and Welcome to Oldsville :D
Plain Talker 03-11-2007, 00:19 ah, the heck with it! we're all young-at- heart! lol
(and BTW, I apologise, for not offering my congratulations, on your "happy event" in my original post. so here's a partyhat for celebration :partyhat: )
If it was in hillsborough...or near s6 then i'd have gone but hunters bar is miles away! :( Thankyou anyway!
