View Full Version : Help please - stuck in safe mode. Halibut 02-11-2007, 08:28 As the title says. Came down yesterday morning found PC in safe mode and can't seem to get out of it. I have Windows 98. Any suggestions gratefully received. Halibut 02-11-2007, 09:09 There must be something I can do to try and solve the problem...... orbrey 02-11-2007, 09:10 I'm assuming when you reboot it just loads straight back into safe mode? Does it give you any other boot options as it's loading? Halibut 02-11-2007, 09:21 I'm assuming when you reboot it just loads straight back into safe mode? Does it give you any other boot options as it's loading? No, you're right - straight into safe mode. Ivor&Mel 02-11-2007, 10:10 You haven't got BootSafe=1 set in msdos.sys, have you...? Halibut 02-11-2007, 10:14 Thanks for the reply - I don't know. How would I find out and what should I do if I have? Ivor&Mel 02-11-2007, 10:17 Instructions for checking are here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q306615) Halibut 02-11-2007, 10:19 Instructions for checking are here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q306615) Thanks - I'll give it a go. Off to work in a few minutes, but I'll post later this afternoon. Ivor&Mel 02-11-2007, 10:20 A further possibility is described in this post (http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1143129&postcount=3) Jabberwocky 02-11-2007, 10:32 We had a comp a few years ago that was getting on a bit and kept doing this. It might be an idea to make sure it IS in safe mode because we discovered that the screen dimentions had gone out of whack, all we had to to was reset them, we had to reset about once every three months until the comp finally gave up the ghost. Greybeard 02-11-2007, 11:35 Jabbers has the most likely answer. 640x480 looks like Safe Mode but doesn't have the 'Safe Mode' labels on the screen. Not sure how 'Safe Boot' might get into msdos.sys unless put there deliberately, but I've never encountered this. Anyway before attempting to edit the 'msdos.sys' file copy it to your My Documents folder in case something goes wrong. It may be that the registry has got corrupted, in which case you could use the 'scanreg /restore' function to revert to a previously good working copy of the registry. See... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221512 and use the oldest copy of the registry to revert to. Halibut 02-11-2007, 14:32 Thanks Jabbers, and Greybeard - it looks like it may be the screen dimensions thing. I tried Ivor and Mels solution, but when I opened Msdos.sys thing in NotePad I couldn't see anything remotely resembling English.... However, when I go to the screen resolution thing it doesn't offer me any option to change it - all it tells me is that I've got 640x480 16 color. Any ideas how I can sort that? orbrey 02-11-2007, 14:49 Sounds like you don't have the drivers for your graphics card installed. Look in device manager (should be in the control panel), this should show you what graphics adapter you have, you can then google for the drivers. Hope that helps, Halibut 02-11-2007, 14:54 Have set the display back to 1024x768 and all now appears to be well. Many thanks to all who've posted. |
