Who is the best world player you have seen in your lifetime?
I think it is Diego Maradona without a doubt.

Dixe Dean, 60 league goals in one season. 383 goals in 433 appearances. 18 goals in 16 england games.

Bill Shankly, "those of us privileged to see Dean play, talk of him the way people talk about Beethoven, Shakespeare or Mozart, he was that good"

i have seen him, he was just very old at the time :D

Without a doubt Nedved

Pele, as the only one who has the achievements to match his skills. Best never got to play in the World Cup at all; Dixie Dean, as pointed out above, only played 18 games for England, and none in the WC as we didn't even bother entering for it. Neither had the chance to prove they were the very best at the top level.

Steven Gerrard is the best player in world football for me. Closely followed by Kaka and Christiano Ronaldo.

I've barely seen any footage of Pele and only a few snippets of Maradona.

I'm surprised Zinedine Zidane isn't on the list. Possibly the best player of his generation.

Shearer wouldn't even get in the all time England XI never mind best player in the world. International class, yes - world class? Maybe briefly in Euro 96.

Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Bobby Charlton, Zidane, Maldini - all absolutely top class in my lifetime.

The best ever.......without doubt Georgie Best.

Of the list I've only seen Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Messi at their best , not that Messi has hit his best yet. Seen as I was only three when Gazza played in the 1990 World Cup I never really saw what all the fuss for him was about. Though one of my first football watching memories is him scoring at Euro 96 against Scotland, quality goal.
The best player I've seen live would have to be Wayne Rooney, my auntie is a Man Utd fan and she got tickets for his debut game against Feberbache. He helped himself to a hat trick after being injured for about 3 months after the European Championships. I wasn't used to watching players like that being a Wednesday season ticket holder I was amazed how normal he seemd to the Man Utd supporters. I was thinking if a Wednesday player did that on his debut Hillsborough would be going mad.
Anyway best player of my generation, I'm going for Zidane

For me, the best players I can remember (I can't remember much of Pele - slightly before my time) but they have to be Maradona, Best and Cruyff.

For those who believe Gerrard is the best player in the world today - I suggest you get yourself a new pair of spectacles - preferably ones without rose-tinted lenses.

fxxk off LFC Paul. Ronaldo appears to have stopped this whereas Gerrard is still a master at it
Maradonna is a cheat granted yes, but you have to question the ability of that Tunisian ref, he must have been the only person in the ground who thought it was not handball. Unfortunately he was the man what mattered

steveb2007

Although Steven Gerrard is a great player,Maradona could score goals and do things with a football that he can only dream about.
Pele(late 50's-early 70's),and Maradona(early 80's-late 90's),were the best footballers in the world of their generation and no one has come anywhere near them since,in my opinion.
Shearer,Dalglish,Gerrard??:loopy:

Maradonas second goal against England was also helped by such ****e defending by Steve Hodge Peter Reid and Terry Fenwick, all three must be in the list of worst England players. Such defending that would embarrass a pub team. Looking at Maradona he seemed to be very one footed too, you watch he seems to only use the left foot.

steveb2007
02-11-2007, 21:34
He was left footed mainly, but he scored loads of awesome goals for Barca,Napoli & Argentina.
You do have a point about his goal against England, but i doubt if any other player in the world would have scored that goal, apart from him!

briggy1967
03-11-2007, 02:55
YES a cheat DOES make Maradona a bad player, anyone who Needs to cheat to score a goal is a bad player and i dont mean ability wise,i mean as a player of moral ethics
And his 2nd Goal against England was one of the Greatest goals ever scored despite **** poor defending, but it does not detract from the fact he is A CHEAT

NEKRO138
03-11-2007, 03:03
Let's be honest, players aren't paid top dollar to have good morals or ethics. A lot of them are paid for the opposite in fact. They're out there to win games.

Let me tell you, if it went the other way and we'd beat Argentina 2-1 with a handball, we'd be loving it. I would anyway.

briggy1967
03-11-2007, 03:13
Agreed Nekro,if say Rooney scored winning Goal in world cup final with a hand ball id have his kids if that was medically possible.
However it Doesnt detract from the fact that morally it would make him a bad player.
And lets not forget that todays top players are role models for youngesters and have a moral obligation towards the good of the game.
Whether they get paid £1000 a week or £100,000 a week it doesnt matter.

His control of the ball was out of this world.

I once heard an England player (can't remember who) talking about how Maradona in a warm up (I think before a game against England, friendly or not) was doing kick ups, but by humping the thing 50 odd yards up in the air, and continuing to do do this for minutes. The thing was Diego stood motionless. It went up, and came back stright to his foot.

I wish I could remember who said it, but he was awestruck.

The French side of 1982/4 was truly admirable and Platini was impeccable, but people forget Rocheteau. Didier Six, and the great Alain Giresse, Marius Tresor and Tigana.

But for some West German brutality and Brazilian showboating, possibly the best World Cup Final was missed.

In my lifetime, I'd have to say Maradona, but there are so many to choose from. Ever, in international football, It's too difficult.

The entire 1970 Brazilian squad, Ferenc Puskas, Johan Cruyff, Sir Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney.

Sod it. It was Jimmy Hagan!

Damn right. Do you remember the goal Suker scored for Arsenal v Coventry a few years ago? Proof that a one footed player can be brilliant.

I was on the North Stand (in United colours :D) in Euro 96 when Suker made a fool of Schmeichel in the Denmark v Croatia match. He nearly did it twice as the Danes were so far forward, he nearly lobbed Schmeichel from the half way line, before he did actually score.

Obviously not a true football fan..maradona was not fit to lace bestys or peles boots,he was a good player at a time when they were few and far between..a bit like the present day lot really.who did the pros pick a few years ago has the greatest..pele closely followed by best

George Best was a great player, probably the best ever in the english game, but he's not in the same league as Maradona or indeed Pele, both world cup winners, although playing for N.Ireland obviously didn't help!

Love him or hate him, his brilliance is unquestionable. Though it would have been (just) before my time at the Lane, would we have battered the skill out of him?

I still say the almost lazy, perfectly timed pass to Carlos Alberto for the fourth in 1970 against Italy is the most delicious pass of all time; in its pure simplicity, unselfishness, and let's face it, arrogance.

The juxtaposition of the time that Pele had to lay it off before Carlos Alberto arrives like a runaway train is incredible; almost deliberately poetic. The fact, however, that the entire move started from left back, and was seamless makes it my favourite goal ever.

It's the same as This piece of rugby brilliance from 1973. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwCbG4I0QyA)

I like him already, just because of this:

"Another time whilst playing against Mark Lawrenson Friday became agitated by the future BBC pundit. He kicked Lawrenson in the face and received a red card before defecating in Lawrenson's kit bag."
