View Full Version : How much should a kitten eat?
TattyBear 31-10-2007, 18:22 Hi,
How much should an 8 week old kitten eat?
At the moment I put him down Felix kitten food and kitten biscuits. I do put him fresh water down aswel and occasionally I see him drink it. But when I give him the felix kitten food I add a bit of water to that (even though its moist anyway). (he wont drink lactol or simicat).
Well now smokey has gone I have noticed he doesnt eat that much. He was always smaller than smokey but i thought thats cos smokey was fluffier but now im worrying he isnt eating enough. :(
It's hard to quantify how much a kitten will eat. At such a young age their stomachs will only hold about 5-10ml of food at a time, so the most important thing is making sure that they fill their tummies lots of times a day.
I was a little worried that the little one I'm fostering wasn't eating enough, but I have to remember that it's been ages since I had only one kitten at a time- and then I found him snaffling adult food from my grown up cats too.
What I'm trying to do is to make sure that he's got biscuits to browse on but he's also eating a full meal at least 4 times a day.
absynthfairy 31-10-2007, 18:27 Hey chicken...how you feeling?
Ok a guide to mine...I give them whiskas kitten sachet 3 times a day - sometimes only 2. They have whiskas catmilk at the same time and a constant supply of fresh water (which they dont drink either) and a bowl of that Royal Canin Baby Cat dry food (which they don't seem to eat but figured if they were hungry they would)...they went to the vets this morning (finally wormed! and a free checkup so thanks for the heads up!) and vet gave them a clean bill of health - said their weight was fine...they'd both put on loads since I weighed them last week.
He'll seem like he's eating less because you'll be putting less out...:(

Charlie always has biscuits down which he does randomly nibble on. If I put food down he goes straight for it and has a couple of nibbles and then walks off and goes back to it later. But I often throw it away after a few hours and put fresh down as I dont like him to eat food if its been down all day.
When you say a full meal, what do you class that as. I feed mine the felix pouches.
thanks meds
(flipping fireworks tonight! animals arent bothered but they do my head in lol)
If you've only got one kitten and you're sure that your other animals aren't eating the food then one tablespoonful counts as a full meal- there's half a dozen of them in one sachet.

Thanks. Im not too bad, still sad but Charlie seems ok which makes me feel better.
I havent taken him to the vets yet.
When I got him I went to the vets (but didnt take him as It was a saturday and I went to vets now without an appointment :o) and I got some panacur worming liquid (gave him 0.3ml for 3 days) and it says on bottle I dont need to worm him again for a month! (I thought it was every few weeks but the vet told me panacur is different. And I also flea'd him with frontline spray, and I dont have flea him again for a 8 weeks.
So do I need to take him to the vets? Is the panacur liquid and frontline spray good medu

Yeah im sure the other animals arent eating it because when we are at work or out he is in the front room on his own (safely away from other pets until he is bigger) and then when we come home and he mixes with our other pets we sit in the front room and we make sure the other cats dont have any lol (they do try )
It sounds like he is eating enough. I think its just because Ive cut down on the amount because there is only one of them now :( But I would say he has about 1 to 1 and a half pouches a day.

I think this is about right for an 8 week old kitten, I know mine ate tiny amounts several times a day at that age.

She gave me the Panacur too and said the same...got to give them another dose tomorrow...I only booked them in to make sure everything was ok and to get them on the books and they were so good news.
well, I made some 'mush' up this morning and straight away, 2 of the 3 kittens (4 weeks old) started lapping it up (but the 3rd one is always out of step with the other 2 when it comes to feeding). I was so pleased - very first time and they took to it straight away! Will have to keep it up - try again at lunchtime. Soon as I put them in the litter tray afterwards, mum decided to go in and christen it.
I have recently got a new kitten as well, she has had the runs for a day and has been sick a couple of times as well.
I have taken her to the vet who gave me some food that is aparantly quite bland. The vet also gave me some worming powder to sprinkle on her food as well.
The thing is she isn't eating much at all, she seems to have no apetite at the moment and hasnt had much of one since we collected her.
Has anyone got any ideas why she may not be eating, or anything I can do to try to stimulate her appitite without her getting the runs again!!
Any advice would be great, this is the first kitten I have owned and I am a bit concerned about her. She it 9 weeks old and she is seeing the vet tomorrow for her injections as long as she is better.
Thanks
Mike
