View Full Version : West Street - full of life or a hellhole?
royjames 24-01-2005, 21:55 What do those who go down town think of west street?is it the place to be at the weekend or is it a nightmare.
I find that the place is very busy with the student population and I enjoy this but some of my mates think its a nightmare, full of drunken students .
Its pretty unpleasant late on friday/saturdays, but most of the time its really quite enjoyable i think. Could do with more eatin places tho IMHO
Not West Streets biggest fan but as Edd says, More comfortable and bearable during the day time..
Funky Dave 24-01-2005, 22:25 Despite the drunken students it's still better than it was a few years ago. Uggghh....
I used to love West Street, but when the Hallamshire Hotel got laminate flooring that was the end for me.

Its not the laminate flooring - its when they got rid of the formica bar it started to go downhill! :D

The begining of the end was when they cleaned the toilets and you could actually play pool on the pool table.
Ah, happy days.
royjames 24-01-2005, 22:46 Well I like the witherspoons pub on west street it serves decent food and you can actually have a decent conversation without being put off by loud music.
And then finish off at aslans for a good kebab. sound.
West Street is just horrible. At kick-out on a Fri/Sat it's like all the animals have been let out of the zoo. So, not wanting to get caught up in that lot I'd say no it isn't a good night out.
I prefer Trippet Lane. Only ever go to 3 bars max though... and usually only one because if I get settled I don't like to move! Anyone would think I was 55 not 25! I think West Street is more suited for people who want to visit multiple bars with the hope of increasing their chances during the weekend pull-a-thon!

It's not the students, it's the white shirt/black shoes brigade. Why does a city the size of Sheffield have so few bars, meaning you have to queue at places like Varsity to get in?
Agree with you Melanie. Trippets is a fab place.
West Street is definitley not full of students on a weekend. As Greenback says its packed with the "white shirt/black shoes brigade" which is why students avoid West Street on a weekend.
The people who go to West Street on a weekend make the area a very undesirable place to be at that time.

Played a few gigs there in the late eighties, memorable because you could count on one hand how many were in the audience. Lugging all the PA system and drum kit up those narrow stairs. There is still some skin off my knuckles on the walls up that staircase.
BUT! A superior PUB then to the, a-hem, BAR it is today.

Me also big fan of Trippets. It's non-chrome, non-chain & independent but with an atmosphere and a cool vibe all of its very own! I know that Evil DrNeil is trying to organise a forum night out there soon... Hope we'll see u there.
I could launch into a story about how that bar changed my life, but will save it for the forum meet...

I like going out round west street. It was loads better though about 4 yeas ago, when S1 was the Foundry and Firkin. I remember when the NME did the west street pub crawl a few years ago. They hated it!
its just got a bit horrible.
Westerways is ok. The Bedroom is asful. BRB's is ok and do nice food. Cavendish and Vasrsity are both hellholes with gangs of drunken lads/lasses falling over everywhere. The Lounge is a long way away and well rubish. Swim is full of idiots. S1 is ok in the day.
The Bath and Red Deer are nice 9off West St)
I cannot understand why so many people rave about Trippetts. Ok is plays nice music but it is vastly overpriced 9last time I went there and asked if they had any offers on they said 2for1 on a cuban lager. Ok, but £4 a bottle!!!!
I've seen lots of fight in there as well (mainly due to it getting that busy you can hardly move and a lot of idiots becoming aware of it)
The seating is basic and often dirty.

E-Man Groovin 25-01-2005, 17:27 I'm gonna have to correct you on a couple of issues Robbie

I can... because it's great ;-)

It's not bargain basement, but that's not the sort of clientele they are after. You generally find a loyal 20-50 year old crowd, people who don't mind spending for quality. Also the beers are two pounds fifty a bottle.

I've been DJing there every week for two years and have been a regular on Fridays & Saturdays for the same period and I haven't seen a single fight. I've seen a couple of paraletic people escorted out but no fights. Whereas I DJ at Halcyon occasionally and I've seen fights there - although I have nothing at all against Halcyon, it's a lovely place.

The seating's basic, yeah but that's the joy of it. It kinda reminds me of an italian ostelria. As for dirty... where'd u get that from?
I'm not too bothered about the bars actually on West Street. As someone has already said, The Red Deer is fab though. :)

But, but The Lounge is FAB! Its my fave coffee bar in/around town!
Swimm is fine during the day/early evening - and has pretty good beer/food very cheap.

Red Deer? You serious? You MUST be a civil servant mid to late 30's (if not further). :hihi:

last time I was in the tables hadn't been cleared all night. To be fair on my more recent visits I haven't seen any trouble 9so they may have sorted that)

They had a fantastic jukebox that was the size of a transit van and they never changed the records in it. I used to like the Mailcoach, The Saddle (the original one) and the Hornblower (which was like the inside of a ship, complete with rigging and plastic crabs in nets).
West Street just doesn't apeal to me now, the pubs have no character.
