When I worked in JLP, we used to post them to an authorised repair company in Birmingham.

Hi. It's my laptop that needs repairing. It's a compaq evo 1015v. the problem is the switch that cuts the power to the screen, when the laptop is closed seems to be faulty. i know it's this cos my friend has the exact same model and when he presses the switch down you can see a very faint silloette, which is all i can see. the screen is fine because it's Fairley new. Thanks.

Is it not under warranty still? The switch is part of the system board so you dont want to be replacing it, you need to take it to bits and try to get the switch to work. If the swith is totally knackered then you may have problems, hopefully it's just stiicking. Happens on some Toshiba laptops aswell. How good at you at taking things to bits?
I probably have a service manual for it if your feeling brave!

yeah ive had it to bits. the switch is soldered to the motherboard so thats why i dont want to mess myself. it's not sticking or anything. i'm sure it's that because my friend can replicate the exact symptoms on his by pressing the switch. Cheers, Nick.

Best option is to remove it and short the contacts out. Backlight will always be on but thats better than it not working!

can i be sure it's a push to make or push to break switch? if i short it could it break the signal?

Its a short gap you need to bridge so try it unbridged first, then if that does not do it try bridging it. At a guess I would say it would need to be open for the screen to function but I can't think of an easy way to be sure apart from trying it.
