I'm just about to start trying to piece together my family tree and was wondering how many people share my surname (Vintin obviously) out there and to see if I can piece the family together. Anybody know any Vintin's or got any Vintin stories?

Good luck mate.

Have you tried the obvious places such as genes re-united, and the electoral roll.

Plus you're the only Vintin I know. :D

Hi
I know a John Vintin who is an electrician and lives or lived at Crookes, I believe he had been a postman at one time. Don't know where he is now but i'm sure he would not be hard to find.

In the 1950s I went to St. Barnabas School on Alderson Rd., which is very close to Shoreham Street, and remember a lad called Vintin. I think his name was Derek, but not 100% on that. He'd be in his early 60's now.

There were only 24 Vintins in Britain in 1901! Of these, 12 were in Sheffield, 11 in Essex and 1 in Kent.

If you go back to 1841, there were only 13! The families were in Sheffield, Cheshire and Sussex.

I went to school with a Steve Vintin in the 1950's. He lived on one of the roads off Cross Lane in Crookes. I think he is registered on Friends Reunited.

There is a Vintin family live in Woodhouse Mill.
Perhaps the children are grown up now and moved out but I think there were 4 boys.

Think they have both passed on now, but for many years Irene and hubby Vintin ran the scouts and cubs at St. Aidans church, Manor Lane / City Road.
They lived on the Arbourthorne.

The Margaret Vintin of Woodhouse Mill (presumably the same person as the Handsworth one is my mother), Irene and Walter of the scouts fame my grandparents. What I am really curious about is how everyone is related. The aforementioned Walter's father also Walter (born 1889 in Ecclesall Bierlow) seems to be where the confusion began. I believe he was one of 9 children but Walter Snr (my great grandfather clearly) seems to have drifted away from his siblings for reasons I don't know (but would love to) and I believe most of the Sheffield Vintins are the children of those siblings, does this ring any bells with anyone? Derek I've sent you a seperate message.

Being new to the forum I am unable as yet to send private mail. Anyway I have not yet begun my family tree research (not restarted) I did some work a couple of years ago ut was not prepared to pay ancestry. whatever fees.
My father Alan's father was William. Alan had at least two brothers Bill (william) and Eric they grew up in Crookes.

Know how you feel about Ancestry fees but they are good for Census material and lots of other stuff. Recently did the family history of an Italian family and found references of them on Hulk ships, their transportation to Australia and about their life there so can help greatly with your research. unusual names help too.:)
P.S I was born in Crookes too.

I am a Vintin originally from Crookes. Allen Vintin and family are relatives of mine. I have 2 brothers, 2 sisters and two step sisters (one now deceased). My father and mother have both passed away and almost all the family still live in or around the sheffield area. I can provide reasonably detailed information about my immediate family if it would help.

Were there two families of Vintins in Ecclesall Bierlow in 1901? My great grandfather lived there at that time but is not mentioned in the 1901 census house mentioned above. His name was Walter Ernest Vintin and I believe he was the youngest of about 9 children.

The above 1901 household (for which the address is 22 Porter Street) is on the same page as this one:

1901 Census
piece 4353 folio 29 page 15
Ct4 No. 2 Porter Street
(Ecclesall Bierlow; St Simon’s)
Emily VINTIN Head Widr 49 charwoman Sheffield
Harriet VINTIN Dau Unm 22 stay busk maker Sheffield
Walter VINTIN Son 12 Sheffield

This is a complicated family due to several multiple marriages.

In this household:
Walter is the son of Emily and Walter, Emily being Walter's 3rd wife.
Harriet is possibly daughter of Emily by a previous marriage or someone else in her family (born MOSLEY, I think)

William in the other household is the son of Walter (senior) by his first marriage, to Sarah Ann ROSE (Sarah Ann, bn PENNY, was previously married to William ROSE).

In between Sarah Ann and Emily, Walter senr was married to Catherine ('Kate') KILLALEE.

These are the dates of Walter's three marriages:

1867 Sarah Ann ROSE bn c 1839 died 1868
1873 Catherine KILLALEE ‘Kate’ died 1883
1885 Emily MOSLEY died 1934?

Walter died in 1890.
