View Full Version : Smokey is going.
TattyBear 30-10-2007, 16:45 The woman that Jackie told me might not want him when she got back off holiday has decided she does want him.
I wasnt getting attached at first, I was fine until jackie said she didnt think the woman would go through with taking him, so due to her saying that I have grown to love him and so has my partner.
Charlie is going to be so lonely and cold without him. My other cats are older and although charlie isnt frightened of them he doesnt have the connection he does with his brother.
They are only 8 weeks old today. So young.
I feel so sad for him and I feel so upset.
shihtzumad 30-10-2007, 18:07 awww, tatty bear, isn't there no way you could talk this lady round to you keeping smokey.

No she cant unfortunately because the woman had picked the kitten she wanted out of the liiter before jackie got them (jackie only took them to wean) so techincally jackie was fostering him for her if you get what i mean. and the only reason I had him was because jackie was having some work done on the house and needed someone to have them quickly for the last 3 weeks and the woman was on holiday so i took charlie and smokey.
That's one of the reasons why when people bring kittens or cats in to the Shelter they sign that they give up the rights to choose what happens to those kittens or cats. It sounds draconian to some, but if they aren't prepared to do the work and put in the time and money themselves then they need to understand that by turning them over to a charity then they lose the right to decide over the animals' future.
I accept that the animals that I foster are fostered on behalf of a charity that is equipped to home check and find the best homes and I'm fine with letting them go- they aren't mine and I don't think of them as mine whilst I'm looking after them.

I knew smokey wasnt mine, and i was happy to let him go when he was strong enough. Its just that I was told last week the woman hadnt been in touch and he was mine, so thats why I let my guard down. :(
Sarah1982 30-10-2007, 18:30 The whole "didnt think she'd want him" rings alarm bells with me
If you're thinking about taking in a new kitty its a pretty big decision - not i'll maybe take it on!! I think its unfair to move him if hes settled
TattyBear 30-10-2007, 18:56 This is the last pictures together that I have taken today. The one where charlie has his arm round smokey is as if he knows and doesnt want him to go.........................Im so upset :(

TattyBear 30-10-2007, 19:11 He's gone :(
TattyBear 30-10-2007, 19:21 Smokey was already hers before jackie got him. The kittens were born to a ferral in this womans garden. and this woman took them all in but didnt know how to wean them. so she phoned jackie and asked her advice and jackie said she would have them to wean them. But the woman picked out one of the litter 'smokey' and said jackie could rehome the other but she wanted smokey back. which was also agreed with the rspca.

CPL do the same and rightly so. I'm just about to start fostering for them- have got my cat pen now, awaiting its first resident.
Tatty, he'll be fine- he's already had to get used to losing the rest of the litter and his mum so as long as he gets plenty of fuss n attention from you, he'll soon adapt. Hey- he won't have to fight to get to the food dish, the litter tray and the toys, will he? Plus, he still has the company of your older cats and your two labs, so don't worry. You might find your older cats become more tolerant now that there's only the one newbie - they sometimes go into a sulk because they see new kittens as a threat- our barmy bengal Alfie is in a bit of a strop now with the 3 kittens in our house, but I keep reassuring him he'll always be the favourite baby and he's started spending a lot more time with me at night- insisting on sleeping on my legs, whereas he used to sleep downstairs or wander around yowling. doesnt stop him grumbling whenever he sees kitties or Ashia though
Charlie has lots of company with his humans and your other animals Tatty- he'll be fine. Just let it all happen and let him start coming to you or the other animals for comfort.

thanks, that'd be nice.
I have to say Charlie isnt as lost looking as i thought he would be.
I think I miss Smokey more than I thought I would. I just keep thinking he will be so scared and whenever I think of him I see his little face looking up at me.........................:(
cuddlycats 31-10-2007, 15:10 Aww-sorry. Im sure they will both be fine though. If it was me, and id decided to keep him id already be looking for another to keep charlie company.

Hunni said I could have one of hers. I just dont know what to do. He seems ok on his own (unless he is upset and I cant tell :()
He does get on well with my cats I already have so I dont know whether to get another one or not :(

My reasoning would be-we planned to have 2 anyway so what the hell! I reckon your house will feel a bit empty (even though you have quite a few other animals) with out 2 kittens running around.
If you decide to get another kitten, now is probably a good time to do it as it is easier to get 2 kittens to bond at very early age, generally. Ours arent too bad- we got Amber in Aug04, Ashia in Nov 04, Aero in Jan 05 and Alfie in Mar 05 and they were all 13 wks old when we got them. There were a few hissy fits but they all get on pretty well with each other and our old moggie Minty.
If Charlie was completely on his own I would say yes, def get another as they are great company for one another when they are youngsters, but it's not such an issue with you also having the older cats n the dogs, he'll have plenty of company - so only do it if it's what you want, rather than what you think Charlie will want. He's a cat- he'll adapt to whatever you decide.
