i attended the 9'o clock service and never saw anything untoward going on. it was quite a shock to hear of all the wild things that were supposed to have happened. chris was a great guy and i feel he was the victim of a conspiracy.

I agree, I found Chris to be a really nice, friendly bloke, but then again I wasn't one of his victims who thought differently. Do you have any evidence it was a conspiracy?

I wonder if Prince Philip and the other lizards were involved? ;)

I recently found a video of a BBC documentary about Chris Brain and NOS and, when interviewed, he appeared to accept that he had behaved inappropriately.

Hopefully someone will come along who has more details but essentially Mr Brain (irrc he was merely a self proclaimed reverend) abused the trust of his followers, indulging in sexual and fiscal shenanigans. It's an age old story, as old as religion itself.

He was alleged to have abused some vulnerable women in his church. I don't think any of them brought any charges against him, but he was thrown out of the C of E.

The C of E rushed him through vicar-training faster than usual because he was attracting hundreds of young people to his services. It seems the fame went to his head and corrupted him. At his ordination service he decided he had to wear the same costume Robert De Niro wore in The Mission and it had to be the actual one used in the film.

Of course Chris seemed like an amazing guy!
Of course you could not tell what was going on on the surface.
If he had seemed like a rapist /cult leader no one would have joined!

I was involved for 10 yeard and only when it ended and the conspiracy of silence was broken did I become aware of things that had been going on. Having been involved for many years I can confirm that I know everything that came out in the media was as close to the truth as you can get when people in pain are not speaking out publicly themselves.
When it all came out I was relieved to know I wasn't mad or imagining things that I had felt were intrinsically wrong over the years.

He is down south working in education media and as far as I am aware will always be 'observed' to make sure he has no involvement in youth or religeous groups because he is a dangerous, deluded man.

The church completely sanctioned his behaviour for years allowing vulnerable people to be ostacised from friends and outcast because they spoke up to what had happened to them. Even after the truth came out they never apologised to the members for preferring a succesful church to build and grow, regardless of what was going on within it's core.

Still I gained the most amazing friends and life experienced that I personally would not change a minute of my time involved in it - but it is THE PAST :)

I wanted to set the record straight (this is my personal experience so I don't speak for anyone else) but Chris deserves no more 'fame' than he has already managed to generate for himself.

[QUOTE=Robster44;4194402] So apart from all the 'stuff' that went on, it seems like an OK modern way to worship. Did you find it so and are there other places doing similar without the bad bits?

What was the worship like, and do you go to a similar place now?

I used to go to the 9 oclock service many years ago , the worship was awesome and there should be more worship like it but as for the leadership of this guy, he shouldn't be involved with any young people he is paedophile and sholud never be allowed near any impressionable young person. The now Arch Deacon of Doncaster told me he was in america and is still there. The hurt and destructuion of young peoples lives comes to mind here.
I will say one thing it was not God who did this thing but a man.

Thanks for the reply. Clearly he was at fault. What I would be keen to recreate is this type of worship, perhaps in a 'milder' format. Just something a bit more upbeat to the usual C of E! Is there anywhere doing this kind of thing?

It was current modern music, with video, film & slide images. Over the years the styles changed alongside the most forward thinking music and imagery and technology and oftern did it better. There were two tpes of services; Communion which was based around a sun and crescent moon shaped table with glassware representng different elements such as fire, soil, water, blood, etc and chanting, whirling dervishers, bells, smells and whistles :) the other server 'Teaching' service' was more of a full on worship, rave, dance party with a relevent and usually challenging sermon in the middle using video or other medium footage to enhance the message.

I've never seen anything or heard of anything like it before or since but am not looking for it so there coul d be tons of them :)

I have no faith at all now and woud not attend church services out of choice. Funerals and weddings are enough!!

I have no idea where this man is now, but I do know that his ordination into the Church of England was rushed by the selector who was so taken with him - The selection in Sheffield was always more vigilant afterwards, as a result.. He leeched onto those who were vulnerable and I know a man who is a priest today and who attended one of these services as a child - He said that this individual was totally disinterested in accepted scripture, and also pretty disinterested in the young men in attendance, prefering to attend to the young women... I may have attended myself as a youngster had I lived in Sheffield as a child, but I am sure I would never have returned... He was a misguided charismatic at best, distrubed and evil at worst... I knew a lady who commited suicide after what had happened to her here as a young woman...
