There the biggest computer shop in the country and without mentioning there name you know who I mean.
I bought a new PC media centre and got it with an option of interest free as long as you pay it within 12 months.
OK that suits me as I don't have to dip into my holiday money.
Got the finance papers today which explain that if it is not paid within the specific time then there is about a grands interest on top.
NO problem as that was explained in the shop.
BUT it also states that when you pay the amount off there is a fee of £25 on top.
That was not mentioned in the shop.
Don't get me wrong I don't mind paying the extra 25 quid on top of my £1100 quid bill but I do mind not being told of this hidden cost.

Went in on Friday to Meadowhall Retail Park get PC fixed, told that BOTH technicians called in sick.

Suggested that I try Rotherham branch.

Told at Rotherham branch they had a 2 week waiting list...also told that they wished Sheffield would stop sending customers to them as an alternative!

Took the blasted thing to an independant on Attercliffe, done by the next day!

Got the same feeling when I went in that they were moaning about Sheffields profit margins compared to theres.
Bl Bla and he never stopped slagging off the store at Meadowhall retail park.
Still, they soon took my business.

It's your own fault for going to PC World, they're useless.

You may as well have gone to McDonalds to buy the thing, in fact, you'd have been better off going to McDonalds for it.

Call me silly but I'd still rather shop for PC consumables and stuff at PC World than the small backstreet computer shops, cos you get more warranties etc with them and you know they're not going to go bust any time soon, unlike said backstreet computer shops.

But the stuff they sell is crap and overpriced, and the warranties arent worth the paper theyre written on cos most of their technicians dont know their arse from their elbow.

I buy most of my computer hardware from a certain web-based company in Sheffield. It's called eBuyer and their returns policy is pretty fair.

We upgraded our computer - reused some of the hardware in our old machine and we got everything we needed from eBuyer. It's a darn sight cheaper than going to PC W***d.

Incidentally a mate of mine went to PC W***d to buy a new dvd drive. He installed it, and within hours it went kaput and took out the rest of his components. He took the item back to PC W***d who offered him A REFUND for the part he bought from them. Even though this dodgy dvd drive took out his entire system.

He stood outside the store for three hours, stopping customers on occasion and telling them about his problems - they eventually took him inside and offered him a new system.

Big companies go bust, eg like when Tiny went bust leaving thousands of customers without warranty! And lo and behold, they reopen again a little later, not honouring said warranties!

As for myself, i build my own, not too difficult really! More to the point, i do a rolling upgrade, one bit at a time, which doesn't force me to shell out loads of dosh at once, and is much cheaper than finance (and they still charge you for 0%, it's included in the price at the start!).

PC World sold one of our school caretakers a new PC at Christmas. He went in last week and bought an internal floppy drive for it. They waited until he had bought it then told him that his PC wouldn't accept an internal drive.

He brought it into us where we fitted it in five minutes.

Lol. Ive never shopped at pc world. I got parts from Ebuyer, and me and my mate built a pc for myself to use. How the hell can they tell someone a pc wont accept an internal drive? ALL pc's can accept an internal drive aslong as they have a space in the front of the case.

My view on this is that those small independant shops you see tucked away on side streets are actually the little gems of the computer sellers. They have to compete with the PC World's and their only way of getting and keeping customers is through word of mouth and customer satisfaction. So yes you might pay a few pounds more but then your not paying £1 a minute support call and you can drop the pc in anytime and have it back the next day fixed properly.

After all the ones I know in Sheffield have been around for years - and why... because their customers keep coming back.

The vast majority of first time computer buyers are not computer wise so buy from such places as uno who. They go home and start the learning process and eventually see the light and start to buy elsewhere. So now if you go into PC World these days the busiest section is always the returns counter. It is my belief that the more they sell the more customers they lose, and eventually willl run out.
A pottted history of my computer experiences.

PC W***d sold me a 2.7GB Celery powered pc when the same pc with a P4 was only £50 on offer. I didn't know any better then.....I do now!.
Well done PC W***d  You lost yourself a customer there ;) .

I went in a few weeks ago to look at some RAM only to find it cost twice as much as it cost's from Crucial! and yes...The returns desk was packed out!.

Not necessarily. We've just taken delivery of some new HP slim desktops with no floppy drive channel on the board. But these are pc-laptop hybrids and not full sized tower systems.

Spot on, my sisters PC has one of them health checks.. I took it in knowing full well the cd rom didn't work. When I collected I said did you check the CD rom out, I had problems with it etc..

'Yeah, sure no problem mate. The health check is done by CD ROM'

Got it home and what a suprise, CD ROM still in-active. PC World paid the price and I got some pennies out of the lying sods!

There are a couple on West Street plus of course the oldest of them all (as far as I know) is Gemsoft just down towards the roundabout from McDonalds. Always worth dropping by and getting prices and just talking to the people behind the counter. They might even be able to refer you to a couple of customers for a review of their service...

Personally, I've not bought a PC from any of these in years - I bought my last two from Mesh and Evesham but I never discount the local ones when I look.

They tried charging my ma £130 for the Windows Support/Recovery disks that come with every PC you ever buy (if you're actually mad enough to buy one from these places that is). A strongly worded visit from yours truly later they agreed to give her the money back. Cos they paid by credit card they put it straight back on the card but being the bright sparks they are they gave her the full refund on the PC - a grands worth of PC for nowt. Now that's a bargain. :hihi:

I knew someone who got a PC from Time (or was it Tiny? They're the same now anyway...) and they didn't include the recovery disk. The HDD went ka-ka so they replaced it under warranty but said he had to pay £70 to get the restore disk.

Thing is, they used the restore disk and never included it. The new HDD must've been a bit wrong from the off because it died. They charged him ANOTHER £70 for the restore disk, which they still didn't include. He paid it too, the great muppet.

PC world sold me an ex display computer for fairly cheap (OK it probably wasnt the cheapest i could find but i was paying with insurance money anyway) but they said they needed to wipe everything off it first and i could pick it up the next day. I got all excited because it was a really good system and i was looking forward to picking it up i FINALLY had a new computer! I went back the next day full of hope and got told they hadnt got round to it yet and to come back the next day. Still excited i went back the next day and the IDIOTS had broken it whilst wiping all the stuff off. :(

They sold me another with far lower spec for a lot more money the fiends.

I would be angrier if it was my money involved.

Hurray for Ebuyer! (if you ignore their postage charges!)

My dad bought his pc from Time, was supposed to be £600 and they charged us for two, coming to over £1200. He rang them, and rang them, and rang them, and after weeks of ringing he threatened to take them to court about it. They soon paid us back .. :D
