I'm thinking of changing my surname back to what it was. It costs £30+ to do it and all the hassle that goes with it..

Anyone changed their name by Deed Poll if so is it easy?

(yes i have looked on deed pole .com lol)

AFAIK it's just straight forward, going into a solicitors and having them draw up the documents. Once you sign em off, take em to your bank, dr's, passport office and jobs a good un.

There may be more to it, but when my ex's mum had hers done, it seemed pretty straight forward!

Did your Ex's Mother change her name back to her maiden name.
If so it may be different from changing your name to a new ID.

You don't even have to change it by deed poll, you are free to call yourself whatever you want (providing it is not to defraud, evade etc.) the deed poll thing is just so you can produce convincing paperwork.

I have three surnames, one being an anglicised version of my swedish name, an one being a common british corruption of the spelling (british keyboards don't have 'ü') and one being my actual (on my birth certificate) surname.

I have never had my name changed by deed poll, and no one has ever batted an eyelid. My driving licence, chequebook and passport all show different surnames.

Save yourself £30 and just call yourself something different. I'm thinking of maybe changing my name to 'Skydancer' or 'Cobalt Stargazer', maybe even 'Slam Thunderhyde'.

P's right. I think you may need to put an ad in a local paper advising 'whom it may concern' that you are changing your name and will no longer be responsible for any debts incurred in your old name.

I got lucky. They'd spelt my surname wrong on my birth certificate, so I just demanded it back and changed my first name while I was at it. Free and easy.:D

When I got divorced I wanted to change my name back and I took some advice.

I was told that I didnt have to have a deed poll or anything else, I could call myself whatever the hell I liked

So I changed it, I wrote to the bank, the doctors, the dentist, the tax man, the insurance people, my boss etc.

The only people that were a problem were Abbey National who wanted an official something before they would change the name on my account. So I withdrew my £20 and took it down to Alliance and Leicester and opened a new account in my new name...

...that was in 1990 and I have never had a single problem ever since.

Dont bother with deed polls, they are an outdated unnecessary expensive anachronism.

Of course you cant wriggle out of paying old debts, whatever your name is, deed poll or not, that easily

You do not need to pay anything to change your name, I changed my name in 1977 by going to see the Magistrate who asked me if I intended to use that name for the rest of my life and I said yes.

She then stamped and signed my birth certificate with the new name and that was it, done, no charge, simplicity it's self.

If you do change it by deed poll, remember to attach the deed poll to your birth certificate, some organisations will not accept the name change without seeing the two documents together.
