I like Walkley, mainly 'cause it's so close the the edge of the city, 10 minutes (or less by car) and your in the countryside. There is a lot of student accomodation but that shouldn't put you off moving there.

Walkely's OK.

Lived there since the 1980s and although South Road has got worse as a local shopping area (no banks, no Post Office) it's reasonably OK.

Well served by the bus network, though it can get hairy when it snows!

Do you like hills?

:)

Walkley seems alright - I'll be up in Walkley in a couple of weeks, it seems a pretty run-of-the-mill area.

I believe that the Netto I went to on my last visit was only around the corner from the relatives property.

Yes, you have to walk into Hillsborough for shops/banks etc.

I don't think Walkley has a GPO either. (We drove to the one in Crooks last time) - I don't think that is the nearest GPO for Walkley residents though, it's just that we were coming back from Hunter's Bar.

I believe it was the 97 that we took to town. And I also think that we walked from Hillsborough up into Walkley from the Bowl Hills.

I lived in Walkley for about 6 months last year. I really liked it. Lots of local amenities and some really nice pubs. The only problem I have with Walkley is the burgalry rate. I was burgled twice in 6 months! I think this is because of the high student population, people take advantage of that. Just make sure you lock up all the time, even if you're just going to the toilet.

When you wander around in Walkley you seem to be constantly walking uphill, even when you do find a down hill bit if you retrace your steps you'd swear the hill has increased in steepness and seems twice as long.
Lots of pubs scattered around several off the beaten track and there are decent bus services to the nearest decent shops though the basics can be found on South Road. The locals a lot of whom seem to of lived there from birth are friendly if you make the effort and there is not the anti student atmosphere you can find in some cities.

How long do you reckon it would take a fit guy to walk into the Cathedral from Walkley?

Depends where you are starting from, if you're at the traffic lights at the end of South Road I reckon you could do it in between twenty to thirty minutes. If you're coming up though from the bottom of say Freedom Road i'd add another ten minutes on at least but then i always have hated walking up hills.

Walkley is sound. Lived there for two years on one of those roads that goes down fron South Road.

Cracking stone-built houses, close to the city centre, brick-for-brick it has to be one of the best value areas of Sheffield.

And don't be put off by the hills. You'll get yourself fit by walking up them and after a few weeks you don't notice them.

There are some great pubs in Walkley, too. The Firwood Cottage, the Palm and the Royal, to name but three.

From Walkley Library to the Cathedral takes me about 35 minutes when it's not raining or snowing...:)

I'm not particularly fit, but not a total couch potatoe either - I do the walk about 3 times a week on average. Just don't ask me to walk back - that only gets done in dire emergencies or after a late night drinking session when I can't get a taxi....:)

I like the sound of Walkley.
35 minutes walk to the city centre.
Close to the University and even has some terraces around
100,000.
No big social (apart from maybe the burglary rate)

I personally love hills and love walking.

Saves you going to the gym.

In fact one of the things I absolutely like the most about Sheffield is that it is dead hilly.

A few years ago I lived and worked in Jerusalem, and wierdly enough Sheffield reminds me of Jerusalem because Jerusalem is also incredibly Hilly and so you get fit just wandering about the place.
I also think the hills give the city character.

correction:

I meant to say no big social problems apart from the burglary rate someone mentioned
