For a few years the land was used as a builders storage yard storing sand, bricks, piping and the like. I sometimes wonder why there are new houses on Tadcaster surrounded by the older terraced housing, a couple of idea's come to mind either the area had terraced housing which had a bomb on them during the war or as in one or two places nearby the land proved to be unstable and so the houses had to be demolished for safety.

Thanks mate, I'm trying to find out whats been there over the last hundred years or so if poss - this might sound weird but I live in one of the flats and my girlfriend is convinced that our flat is haunted!! I wouldn't give it any credence but ever since our son was born five months ago all sorts of odd things have been going on!!

Having grown up in the area I've been racking my brains to remember anything that might been there when I was really young but I can't think of anything past the builders yard that you mentioned, and i find it hard to believe that an ex-brickie's yard could be haunted 30 feet up in the air!!!!!

Have you tried asking for info from the church, I'm sure some of the congregation are fairly old and so it's possible the church minister/elder would be able to ask around for you.
I know there is a Norton and Gleadless history group so might be worth contacting them to see if there is aWoodseats group or whether they have any old maps of the area.

Couldn't find anything on the pictures site, one of those 'almost, but not quite' moments when looking at some of them though!! Managed to find an Ordnance Survey map fron 1882 - 1895 though, and the Woodseats Road/Scarsdale Road/Chesterfield Road jubnction is clearly visible, as is the big corner where Chesterfield Road bends down to Heeley and the bottom of Derbyshire Lane, and as far as I can tell from the picture there isn't anything here back then, just fields . . . . no major surprise I suppose, but nevertherless, I'm getting somewhere!!!!

This may sound a little too obvious, but was it the church graveyard?

It's a baptist church, and i don't think they have graveyards?? Could be wrong though. . . . . .

Was it built as a baptist church? Sometimes they change hands.

I'm almost certain the area where the newer houses
(built in the early 1960s) on Tadcaster Rd/Crescent are now used to be a brick works a long time ago, there was an old brick works where Courts/Homebase is too. The area was just open land.

I think there was a little brook (now culverted) ran down through it and a pond at the bottom and then the brook which still runs past the bottom of the gardens on Woodseats Rd. We used to be scared by being told that the pond was haunted by someone who drowned in it! But i think that was just a scare story to keep kids away and safe ... I'm sure it was there ... maybe someone else who lived in the area forty or so years ago might know more?

Perhaps the odd goings on are just the flat sinking into the pond? Not the best place to build anything, a pond :suspect:

ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh! bad Strix, bad, bad, Strix ... stop trying to scare peeps ...

where the flats are was just a big delivery yard used by Cowen & Barretts, might have been those other things mentioned before though, dunno.

The pond was right at the bottom of the area .... in fact, it might not have been a pond at all - just an area that got flooded in very rainy weather? It's a long time ago ... when i was little ... a very very long time ...

If the flats are sinking we're ok for now 'cos we're on the first floor Strix, feel sorry for the guy downstairs though :) I got some info from a person in the local history group yesterday, and she seems to think that it was part of the farm that was based on The Dale, so maybe there were outbuildings or something around here back then ??

:hihi: I hope you get to the bottom of this, though. Farm buildings? That still doesn't provide any obvious answers. Good luck with your digging

If you pop into the Local Studies section of the City Library they have copies of maps from way back that you can buy cheap.
They also have some maps of Sheffield districts I believe - it's worth a look.
