View Full Version : 6 week old kitten question
TattyBear 25-10-2007, 21:06 Hi,
My 2 kittens are 7 weeks old this coming tuesday.
They are eating fine, their poo isnt runny (solid in shape & colour etc....) they are poo'ing very regular and wee'ing regularly.
However they hardly drink! I bought cimicat and lactol and they just arent interested. However I have on the odd occasion seen one of them drink a tiny bit of water.
Should I be worried that they wont drink milk or water? or, cos their healthy should I not worry?
Are they on wet food or dry? If they're on tinned food they probably won't need much liquid of any sort.
Cats have really efficient kidneys (up to 60 times more effective than ours) so unless they're eating food with the moisture taken out then they don't need to add much to the fluid they take in with food.

They are on felix kitten food with biscuits aswell and they seem to really enjoy it. I know felix isn't a top notch kitten food but they seem to like it and they haven't had an upset tummy or anything while they have been on it. :)
absynthfairy 26-10-2007, 10:28 Mine barely drink any water either but love their 2 dishes of kitten milk a day!
If they're eating meaty food then they won't need much liquids at all unless they have diarrhoea or a stomach upset. If they drink milk it will be because they like it rather than because they need it.
SaxonLeigh 26-10-2007, 10:46 my cat dosent drink water or milk. i was a bit worried at first but he's 2 & 1/2 now & is still alive so must be ok. he is also on wet & dry food mixed, he all ways has a bowl of fresh water down but havent once seen him drink out of it.
he sometimes licks water out of the bathroom sink or out of the dirty water drain outside or a puddle. i've been told by a few people that cats prefer to drink rain water, dont know why. i dont see him drink very often at all but i know he must be getting hydration from somewhere wether it be food or the bathroom while i'm out.
i wouldnt worrie too much, cats really are strange resiliant creatures.
Ginger_Kitty 26-10-2007, 10:49 We worried the same about our two kittens, but were assured by the vets that if they were on mainly wet food they'd be fine as they got most of their needs from that (as medusa says)
Nowadays they drink more... preferably out of puddles, buckets, the waterbut-tap that drips... :)
My cat hardly drinks either..
She's always got a fresh bowl of water down but very rarely have I known her drink it..
She's happy and healthy enough so I'm not to worried.. :)
She does however ask for a drink of milk now and then..
Honestly, when I'm getting the milk out of the fridge, she'll jump up at the carton and meow..:hihi:
My lot drink gallons, but they live entirely on a dry diet. It's really amazing how much water they drink compared with when they were on wet food.
