What is it like to live in Swallownest?
How long would it take to commute to central Sheffield?

Commuting time to Sheffield is about 40/50 mins in the rush hour, 20 mins at other times.

I used to live there, and it's ok. No real problems, reasonable choice of shops/take-aways, handy for the motorway.

I'll second that, but prices in nearby Woodhouse have risen by a higher percentage over the last four years. Woodhouse has a train station (10 mins to town, 20 to meadowhall). Swallownest is probably just over half an hour by tram. Both handy for motorway and crystal peaks shopping centre. Rothervalley country park is on the doorstep.

Swallownest isn't actually on the tram route - the nearest the tram goes is Crystal Peaks, which is about a 10 minute drive away.

Agree with you about Rother Valley - it's an asset to this side of Sheffield.

Do some parts of Woodhouse still experience the smells from the water treatment place? About 27 years ago my parents went to look at a house there, in the middle of summer, and it stunk! :gag:

What water treatment place? There's a wildlife reserve on some ex-waterworks at the stone lane end of woodhouse.

Just checked the map.

Swallownest is further out than I thought it was. It is probably further out and less well-serviced by public transport than you'd like, Joggen

2 buses an hour from Swallownest to Sheffield, and 2 to Rothetham. I think there's also one bus an hour to Crystal Peaks. There are occasional services to Dinnington, Worksop and Meadowhall.

You'll pay your council tax to Rotherham.

Swallownest is great, I have no problem with the buses, you get 4 an hour in the morning (7 til 9) and at night (4 til 7) to Sheffield. Other times you get 2 an hr. Last bus 11.15pm.

In the morning it takes between 25-40 minutes to get in but going home rarely takes longer than 25 mins.

The co-op and Dels supermarket are adequate, a nice butchers and several takeaways. 3 chineses! an indian, a pizza place and a chippy to be precise.

The pubs aren't too exciting, however there are lots of good places to walk, Rother Valley - Ulley.

It's only 15 minutes by car to meadowhall and centertainment and only 5 to crystal peaks.

As mentioned the tram doesn't come to swallownest, the closest it gets is Crystal peaks. Once we got off at Sothall and walked across Rother Valley country park, it took about an hour and a half!

Council tax is Rotherham and they seem to me to be better at recycling collection etc than Sheffield.

Swallownest is great, you can get a cool house with lots of space and its on the edge of loads of countryside, but only 15 mins to meadowhall and town by car.
If you want to see some properties for sale there look at www.2roost.com there are several on there, all very nice.
If you are looking I can help you.

Thanks everyone for all your comments.
Although it does sound nice it might be a little
too far out for me I think

If you have no transport then you would be better looking at Sothall, Beighton, Halfway, all nice areas next to tram stops and bus routes, without paying over the odds for a particular post code.

I'm in the process of buying one of the Persimmon homes at Swallownest (moving just down the road from Aston). You will be looking at £200k minimum for a house on that development.

There are few high tension power lines in the area.I am not sure if they are of any concern. What is your view?

Our house is very close to, although not directly under, the power lines. Not a problem as far as I'm concerned.

I'm mad enough already...............:loopy:

Yes there are, if the estate we are speaking of is 'Aston Manor'. Only last week My Partner was called to re-direct the geopathic stress for a property on the said estate.

One can do things to decrease the EMF transmitted by the overhead power cables and pylons but personally I wouldn't live within close proximity to one.

I was quite interested to read this atricle on the experiement by Richard Box, a friend of a friend.

My Doctor told me that you are more likely to get radiation from an X-Ray than a health problem from a Pylon??
Which realy cheered me up as I live near some pylons and have had lots of X-rays recently, oh joy!
So any more info here will be appreciated.

Your thinking of Woodhouse Mill and the sewage treatment works there and yes it does stink in summer.

I'm moving to swallownest.

If I had to be in North Sheffield, Hillsborough area for 9am, what time would I have to set off?

Malkin

@exile

via public transport or private?

Public transport you'd probably have to get the 7.49ish bus to town and then a tram or you could somehow get to crystal peaks and then on a tram all the way.

Car would prob take about 40 mins if you avoided the parkway and city centre.
