What is this area like to live in?
What are the public transport links into central Sheffield?

Trains from meadowhall to Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds (amongst others). Buses from there are good too. Trams from Meadowhall.

Wasn't top of our list when we were house hunting (check the cars on the drives to see if you think you'll fit into an area), but it was an area that was starting to move more rapidly (price wise) last time I looked (about 9 months ago). Could be good if you're looking to make a profit.

I've forgotten where you're moving from. How's the hunt going? Try searching some threads, there's been quite alot of this sort of thing recently.

It's not snobbery. It's important to feel part of your neighbourhood.

You wouldn't feel at home at Bramall Lane in an Owls shirt. It's the same principle. People choose cars that reflect their personalities, so if your car fits in - you'll fit in!

Simple really

Ok, but how I read what you said was more like: "took one look at the old bangers on all the drive ways and thought 'no, this isn't for us, drive the Merc away darling before it gets keyed'". ;)

I don't know whether Jogenn has an old banger or a Merc (and probably neither, given the interest in public transport). My advice applies to anybody house hunting.

Perhaps your interpretation says more about you? ;) (Not squinting too closely at that avatar :D )

Thanks for the replies.

Strix,

I have already moved from London and am renting a place whilst getting to know Sheffield.
The word was out in London that the market had collapsed so I expected a long haul to get the price I wanted, but I got four buyers the first time the place was shown and at the price I wanted!
So much for the property market collapse in London!

Anyway, Wincobank sounds interesting.
I have noticed there are some big properties there for around 100000,
3 bedrooms garage and detached.
Obviously it can't be a posh area, but like you say it might be a good investment

Perhaps it'll be a good idea to keep the car in the garage? ;) Did you read t020's contribution? :D

If you're really brave, check out the local pubs before putting in an offer too. It'll give you a good idea of how friendly the neighbours might be!!

I personally think S6 is a better option for affordable property.

Strix, I can see the point on the "check the age/make of cars that are along the road" - it may be slightly snobby, but you can tell - in the main - the sort of resident you are likely to expect to reside there.

Not always the case though. Areas favoured by young professionals often have older or cheaper cars in them, simply because the young couples have suddenly found themselves with a massive mortgage to concentrate on and the better cars will have to wait until future promotions/ pay rises. A good example would be Crookes.

Hmm... True, they will be coming out with huge debts.

Hang on!!!!

t020 get's all elitest about Mercs and bangers, and I get it in the neck???

You can get all PC about it, but if your car fits - you're likely to fit. It's about personalities, not price.

Ded simple. No angles. Just that.

Even if you can only afford to spend under a grand on a car - you still have choices. Have a nose around Autotrader, and your local neighbourhood. I think you'll find I'm right.

Come on, it was pretty obvious what you originally meant. :)

Nope.

It was something that suddenly occurred to me whilst driving up yet another 'samey' culdisac one Saturday afternoon whilst house hunting.

The one with 13 houses and 11 caravans was the most obvious though!!!! Keeping up with the Joneses was obviously rife in that street.

We all make judgements about peoples' personalities whilst we're driving. That doesn't stop when they park.

Should I start a new thread?

I know what you're saying! It's just how it reads at first.

Looking at housing that's more affordable, what are people's views on Wincobank? Also which are the better or worse parts of it please?

BertieBasset, i dont know Wincobank too well although i lived there for 5 years as a child. However if i had to put areas on a high to low scale then it'd be just below middle (if that makes sense)

I know a few roads around wincobank which are fairly nice, although again i know a few which aren't. I'm sure others may disagree

Hi there,

I've lived at Wincobank for the past 8 years - well more at the Brightside end really. My road is lovely although like most areas, some roads in the area are not that lovely. I always think that there is good and bad in every area.

I moved there from Stocksbridge to be nearer to work. So now I can walk to work, walk to meadowhall, and I'm not far from the city centre. I've never been burgled (touch wood) and my neighbours are all lovely.

No doubt some people will disagree and there are some parts of the area that I would not like to live in, but that goes for almost anywhere I think.

In my opinion and from my own experiences, the roads in and around me which I find nice are,

Jenkin Avenue, Jenkin Close, Beacon Road / Way. Ridge View Drive / Close. Oxted Road, Stupton Road. Further up the hill are all the Sandstone Roads (Road, Close, Drive etc) but I don't go up there much.

I live in brightside around the jenkin close area and i love it it is quiet no trouble no bangers parked around as somebody asked houses are selling at around the £90000 mark and sell straight away . I would say take a look.
