View Full Version : Trying to trace an address, Cleveland Square
Sara Latham 24-10-2007, 19:49 Hi. I am currently working on tracing back our family tree, and have no knowledge of Sheffield at all.
I know that a Charles Oxley (the person I am trying to trace), died in Dec 1949 and was married to A Oxley. According to the records I have, they lived at 4 Cleveland Square, Sheffield which could have been in Attercliffe and he worked as an insurance agent.
On all maps I can trace a Cleveland St, but this is not in the North East part of the Borough but Cleveland Square does not seem to exist anywhere.
I am hoping there maybe someone out there who may know of the street and even if they knew of the Oxley family.
A huge request given that it was a long time ago, but I thought I would consult the forum for someone who may be able to help.
Regards
Sara
fox20thc 24-10-2007, 19:53 good luck Sarah, there are a few local history buffs on here who may arrive to help. Most of attercliffe has now been demolished some time so if you are looking on modern maps you won't find it.
Off Darnall Road, near on to Bridport Road
Sara Latham 24-10-2007, 20:32 Hi there. I don't know Sheffield at all, so does that mean Cleveland Square actually exists or is this off any old map?
Hi there. I don't know Sheffield at all, so does that mean Cleveland Square actually exists or is this off any old map?
I have an old 1958-9 street guide that says it was off 108 Darnall Rd. Attercliffe . Long gone I would say , as with many old Sheffield roads .
Plain Talker 24-10-2007, 21:07 I think what it means is, that, like many of the old streets around that area, it no longer exists, but you may find its location if you look up Cleveland St on an old map (from prior to 1070, say which was the rough time(s) when there were most of the clearances off Darnall and "the 'cliffe", you'l find where the "square" ran from, off the bigger road.
My grandpa's house at Attercliffe is buried under the Arena car park

No longer there, closest modern map location, the small building to the top side of Wilfred Road would be about it.

I have got an old map (must be old cost 18p!). Although Cleveland Square is not shown it is shown in the index and it says it is adjoining Darnall Road.
Sara Latham 25-10-2007, 20:22 Everyone. Thank you so much for this information.
Can I ask if anyone knows of any cemeteries in the area which would be worth searching?
I really appreciate everyone's help.

Hi
Let me know if this is the correct family as there are others of the same surname.

Sara Latham 28-10-2007, 17:13 Tuppie - thank you! This is an absolutely fantastic result and has saved me so many hours. I was just arranging to visit Sheffield Archives to start the search. This is definately the right family.
Can I ask how it would be best to trace any family members ie brothers/sisters/children of Charles Oxley? I just don't know how to start!
I can't thank you enough for this.

Sara
Hi Sara.
You need to work backwards one generation at a time and proving as you go.
Do you know the names of any of the children of Charles and Alice OXLEY...?
If so then a copy of the birth certificate will give the fathers name and occupation and the mothers name...plus the important detail..her maiden name. This will enable you to find a marriage certificate for these two, which will list their fathers names and occupations. From their ages on the marriage certificate you should be able to get the correct birth certificates...and then hopefully be back to the 1901 census. You do this by using the General Register Office indexes available online as pay to view or at the archives.
Check out this site and use the "getting started" link.

If you are stuck post a message on one of the Genealogy message boards...there are always people who will help you.

stewpot54 24-01-2010, 09:07 I have been trying to find out what happened to Wigan Place in Carbrook. My dad's family lived there in the 1900's and I think they kept pigs somewhere close by.
I would love to know more about the place and when it ceased to exist.

There's a strong possibility that the road you want was one of the roads that were wiped out, in the late 1960s and early/ mid 1970, when "slum" clearance "did-for" most of the streets in Brightside, Carbrook, Attercliffe and very many in Darnall.

My grandpa's house at Attercliffe is buried under the Arena car park
It's many years since I visited Sheffield and your post made me curious. Do you know if Brown Baileys steel works is also buried under the Arena somewhere? Thanks for your help.
Wigan Place was off 249 Dunlop Street. I'm having trouble linking to a map but it is easy enough to go into Google maps and find Dunlop Street. There are two un-named roads at the end and one of them was Wigan Place. The houses have been demolished. I am sorry I cannot tell you the history.

I'll need to consult the 1950's maps to determine exactly where the arena covers.
I do know that the car park between the Carbrook School, and Broughton lane covers all the housing between Carltonville Road, covering Campbell St, Ravensworth Road, Melville Road and the little cul-de-sac next to Melville.
The car park goes as far as the railway bridge, on Broughton, that part, and the arena itself, covering where the co-op depot was.
I also know that the Terry Street rec, on the other side of the school was swallowed up by being turned into the Don Valley Bowl.

That's very useful, in helping pinpoint more closely where this road might have been, grahame. Thank you.
Plain Talker 24-01-2010, 13:23 Had a look at the old map. grahame's suggestion is fairly close, but "just" the wrong side of Yarmouth St
to roughly locate it, on a modern map:-
Find Weir Head, off Carbrook St (Carbrook St bends,to the right, at this point)
make a line, from the corner opposite Weir Head, to Yarmouth Street. Approximately half way between the two points along that line is where Wigan Place was.
If you click on the satellite photo of the map grahame kindly posted, it's about where the line of light/ shade appears on the roof of the long factory building, about in line with the l of Dunlop St.
Hope that's helpful?

Thanks harmston. I'm going to google the area. Apparently my grandad and his brothers worked at a steel works which is now buried under Meadowhall shopping mall. They used to go to the slippers baths once a week.
