View Full Version : Old Pub Landlords where are they now???
goldenfleece 24-10-2007, 13:41 Just remembering some of my local haunts in the early 80's and wondered if anyone knew where the Landlords moved on to, perhaps other pubs in Sheffield?
There was a bloke who ran the old SHINY SHEFF on Crimicar lane who was something to do with HMS Sheffield, x Navy man, kept a real tight ship at that pub....can't remember his name now....large guy, real old skool sea captain type.......where is he now???
The X footballer who used to run the RISING SUN in nethergreen, forgotten his name too but he was former United Player I think?? Had mad permed hair and delicious wife.........where is he now?
Landlord Derek Brown who had THE YORK in Broomhill in late 70's and early to mid 80's......he was getting on a bit, well late 40's early 50's at the time but maybe still around.....
The Landlord of the YORKSHIREMANS ARMS 1983/4/5 was a chap called Keith who previously had the BEAGLE in Parson X....still around?
And who was the chap who used to run the old original Sportsman in Crosspool, which is now retirement flats complex....at least I think it was called the Sportsman (opp the Tapton/King edwards school playing fields on Manchester Rd) it underwent a massive refurb in the mid 80's with huge extension on it but was a small stone built trad pub in the early 80's.....
The chap called PETE who had the original SPRINGVALE in Walkley who had an alcoholic wife who did paintings....where is he now?
And the ORIGINAL landlord of the Hadfield before ROB took it in 1988/9.....was he called KEVIN?? Think he took on the Porter Cottage for a while but not seen him since......
anyone know where these old landlords ended up??
The 80's are a bit after my time but the pub pulled down to make way for flats was the Kings Head. The Sportsman is still at the top of Stephen Hill.

Correct - The Sportsman, with people 60 or older - is still referred to as "Blenky's" - a reference to the former landlord who was a star name at Sheffield Wednesday, Ernest Blenkinsop.
CHAIRBOY 24-10-2007, 17:21 RISING SUN - Nether Green - I think Golden Fleece is thinking of former Owls' player, Graham Pugh.
sweetdexter 24-10-2007, 22:09 Dead, alas.
Gone but not forgotten
RISING SUN - Nether Green - I think Golden Fleece is thinking of former Owls' player, Graham Pugh.
Graham pugh & his wife sue had the freemasons pub in hillsborough, think he runs a golf club now.

They moved to the Freemasons from The Rising Sun.
CHAIRBOY 25-10-2007, 07:23 The Old Grindstone - Barry and Audrey Sandsby. They took over the Crookes pub from Bill Brookfield - well before it was revamped and there were some wonderful nights to be enjoyed there.
He was a character, though not to everyone's taste, but he certainly attracted custom from far and wide - from the University Music dept. to Hillsborough Golf Club.
I think it was Barry who introduced "Continental Hours" to this one-time Ward's pub? I am indebted to this landlord as I met my wife in 1982 there, as she had turned up as a support to a friend sorting out an insurance deal with BS.
Barry, I am told, went back to his joinery roots and is living in Blackpool.
Where is Ken & Marie Glover now?
They used to run the pub on the corner of Gower street and Carlisle street opposite the old Cyclops Works.
Happy Days!
Ousetunes 25-10-2007, 12:58 Fred and Ettie Howe used to be mine hosts of the Sheff. I'm struggling to remember precisely when they left. They were definitely still there in 1987 because I had my 18th birthday there. So I reckon they must have left in the early 1990s.
My parents were good friends of Fred and Ettie and I have just asked my mum if she remembers where they moved to. She seems to think they moved to Stradbrook but also told me that both of them are no longer alive (with Ettie departing before Fred).
As for Graham Pugh, he and his wife ran the Rising Sun till 1987. I was there for their leaving do (first time I'd managed nine pints in one night. Sadly, I gave them to the pavement outside upon leaving, but I was still chuffed). They moved to the Masons at Hillsborough as Chairboy rightly points out. Both pubs were tied to John Smith's back then.
Pete and Linda Bain took over the Rising Sun and remained till around 1995. The first thing I noticed was that 'Buff' (Pete) had removed the video juke box out of the lounge (agh!). Fortunately, things improved and these were to become the golden days of the Rising Sun for me and many others, including notorious trips to York Races and minibus trips to Castleton in summer and winter. Then Richard and Clare Cornips (who later established Spinrocs in Crookes) took over. Didn't they return to either Belgium or even go to Tenerife?
Pubs with characters behind, as well as in front of the bars. And they were packed solid almost every night (before all day drinking and smoking bans).
The Wentworth House Hotel, Milford Street - landlord Richard Addy (known as Dick) and his wife Bertha. Her daughter (name unknown) ran a pub outside the city in a rather isolated spot but can't remember the pub's name either!
CHAIRBOY 25-10-2007, 18:48 I remember a landlord at the now demolished "King's Head"- Crosspool - (late 70's) called TOM but can't recall his surname or where he went? This was at a time when there was a piano in the main room and a snug at the back where a certain policeman called Gerry Broad drank along with a few others.
After Tom left, food came on the agenda and sauce bottles from lunchtime were still on the tables at 9pm Sunday evenings. Now I love HP sauce but not with beer, which was Whitbread Trophy.
CHAIRBOY 27-10-2007, 20:55 Travellers Rest (Oughtibridge) - former landlady, Joyce Cooper, died suddenly on Oct. 23 aged 81. Her funeral is at Grenoside Crematorium on Nov 1 at 2.30pm. Her late husband was called Cyril, for those who remember them.
baby barrie 28-10-2007, 18:44 RISING SUN - Nether Green - I think Golden Fleece is thinking of former Owls' player, Graham Pugh.
Graham pugh also run the free masons on the bridge at hillsborough

Till Man 29-10-2007, 15:43 The Landlord of the YORKSHIREMANS ARMS 1983/4/5 was a chap called Keith who previously had the BEAGLE in Parson X....still around?

As far as I remember Keith retired from The Yorkshiremans after being told he had angina and was told by the doctor to pack in running pubs and slow down or run the risk of being carried out of the door in a pine box within 2 years.
I just hope he is still with us and has his health, he was a nice bloke who ran a good pub.
Rocklegend 02-11-2007, 17:22 Graham Pugh now runs a WMC in Woodhall Spa.He would be really pleased at being called an ex Blades player.....:hihi:
handypandy 02-11-2007, 21:22 Not really an old pub landlord, but does anyone know where Brian Spye went after the Rose and Crown at Darnall traffic lights, closed down. Never actually went in the place but he was an old mate from the 70's.

Where is woodhall spa.
CHAIRBOY 03-11-2007, 07:42 Where is woodhall spa.
South-east of Lincoln.
WallBuilder 03-11-2007, 15:10 Keith the old landlord of the Yorkshiremans Arms was a really nice guy and he knew a lot of the regulars by name. Once when I was on antibiotics he overheard me mention this just after he'd served me a nice pint of cider, he immediately snatched the pint back and instructed the rest of the bar staff I was only to be served soft drinks for the next three nights. Rather annoying but I suppose it showed he cared for my well-being and he didn't charge me for the pint.
I believe he went on to work on the security team for the Sheffield Hallam university as I saw him in the mid 90's briefly.
I seem to remember the landlord of the shiney sheff did a stint at the Mill (Halfway) as a relief in the early 90's he was a chubby fellow with a grey beard, this was just at the point of his retirement, where he said that he was moving to Lancashire with his wife. May not have been the same chap but he was a nice bloke.
steamrollus 06-11-2007, 17:18 Big Mick Lee at the Mulberry Tavern, Chuck Charlesworth at the Golden Ball, Johnnie Angel at the Cannon. This would be 1975 to 1980 town was never better!
What happened to Terry Steeples former landlord at the Mucky Duck, last I heard I think he moved out to the East coast

steamrollus 13-11-2007, 16:58 Great landlord Terry, I remember standing outside the Mulberry with Mick Lee when a guy came past and greeted him and had a 10 minute conversation about how great the Black Swan had been in the past etc the man thought that Mick was Terry and they did look alike, Mick being the gentleman he was never let on.What happened to Terry Steeples former landlord at the Mucky Duck, last I heard I think he moved out to the East coast
My Uncle Tommy was the Landlord of the Duke of York at Darnall for a few years

Toastmaster 22-10-2008, 16:43 henry flather at bay horse, bill burkes at big tree and bob huntlery hanarahans. all great landlords
Big Mick Lee at the Mulberry Tavern, Chuck Charlesworth at the Golden Ball, Johnnie Angel at the Cannon. This would be 1975 to 1980 town was never better!
Chuck is now at three cranes on queen st, but not for much longer as the pub closes at the end of next week as he has got to go to the bakrupcy court. Its a terrible shame this. He is a great bloke and what he don't know about the pub trade, aint worth knowing. He puts on a great pint and makes you feel so welcome in the pub. It will be so sad to see him go. Another nail in the coffin of the pub trade thanks to the greed of the pub companies
Ray and Linda from the once Shiregreen Hotel.
Has Ray retired, Heard he ran another pub after the Shiregreen.
If anyone went in the rose and cown on darnall in the early 80s will remember the landlord Chad.He sadly passed away this year but was a good landlord and a real laugh.:(
