View Full Version : Red lion - London Road - Heeley Bottom
muddycoffee 24-10-2007, 12:09 This once decent, historic local boozer was runined by the greedy owners when they converted it to Mr.Q's in 1999 by knocking out the partitions and with it, the character. It lasted about 5 years after that, until it was closed by the cops due to the antics of the chavs which had replaced the customers.
Anyhow it has been closed and abandoned to weeds and the weather for a few years and all of a sudden builders are in the building, does anyone know what is happening to the place?
Please god no more flats and it can be made into a decent multi roomed boozer again.
BasilRathbon 24-10-2007, 12:13 Good news, it would seem....

The Red Lion is now open again, and is looking quite smart from the outside. When I've been past on the bus I've managed to spot a bank of 4 or 5 hand pumps serving real ale too.
However I haven't had chance to go in and see what it's like yet - have any of you been since it opened and if you have is it any good?
muddycoffee 09-01-2008, 21:23 According to the notices it is opening on Friday. ( 11th Jan 2008 )
Unfortunately the partitions have not been replaced, although they do seem to have restored the area which was the function room to a seperate room.
The lights have been on for a few weeks but I detect that rather than customers, it is for the benefit of the decorators.
I think it is a very strange time to open up at the begginning of January. Traditionally the quietist month in a pub with many people have no money having spent it at christmas and new year.
The_Boy_Hoy 10-01-2008, 09:02 i'll be going down friday, it's on the end of my road and our lasses birthday so why not!!
I've been in when it was partitioned and Mr Q's, it was ok as Mr Qs at first but rapidly went downhill.
I'm hoping it will be a bit more like it was originally rather than full of idiots like it got before it shut.
Snooker, Darts and home cooked food sounds good to me though.
RandumDave 10-01-2008, 14:45 Its looking promicing. I know the geezer who is now in charge and hopefully he will be able to keep the hoodies out who used to gang round the pool tables.
Its not that it was a BAD pub as a Q's its just the staff didnt give a damn cos they where a slave to the wage. I know the pool tables are gone an there is now a snooker table. From what ive been told the function room is now back in action and the owner is thinking about having live bands on which would be pretty cool. heres hoping that now its been taken over it sticks to the traditional boozer feel of the area.
Powerage 10-01-2008, 14:51 I have heard it is being run by the people who used to have the Sportsman in town not sure if this is true or not anyone know?
Claire18 10-01-2008, 15:31 There's a thread on it here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=144739/)
Saw the furniture being delivered today - thought they'd left it a bit late
WhiteHawk 10-01-2008, 15:34 Great news that its back open. We used to go fairly regularly for lunch as I only work round the corner. That was when it was The Red Lion, then it changed to Q's and it was rubbish.
Might have to venture up there at some point again now, if they're doing food that is.
The_Boy_Hoy 10-01-2008, 16:22 the owner is thinking about having live bands on which would be pretty cool.
That would be ace for me if i can get a gig there can walk down the road with me guitar, all one minutes walk of it!!!

They're definitely doing food - the permanent signage on the outside mentions it.
Another bit of signage says 'a very warm welcome' (or something v similar). Isn't that what Ember Inns pubs usually have outside them? If so and it is an Ember Inn the food should be reasonable if pretty generic.
RandumDave 10-01-2008, 16:47 yeah its the same guy that run the sportsman in town, the fodder will be home cooked food usually decent meals like meat an tatty pie an stuff like that.
The_Boy_Hoy 10-01-2008, 16:50 is it Ian, although he had the sportsman quite a while back??
RandumDave 10-01-2008, 18:11 a while back? about 3 years me reckons. No its not Ian, he never really run the sportsman, just had his bar ppl run it while he went drinking in the pubs in the area LOL

Yes it is the guy who had sports man and the pump pub x cabbie
Reason y its open in now rather than december is because stuff was gettin pinched copper pipe lead of roof hence y u see light on early mornin 24 hour security
I am really looking forward to having a nosey and a pint in there shortly.
I have always enjoyed having a drink at the pubs in Heeley and after this closed it did lengthen our walk in between pubs :hihi:
I hope the beer garden is still going to be child friendly!!
:D
Maybe we should arrange a ''Heeley Meet'' in there instead of the usual ''Woodseats one''???
Anyone keen/up for it???
muddycoffee 10-01-2008, 19:35 You KNOW I am..
Heeley is just a short walk for me.
It's been soo long..

Indeed!!!
PM me once you've been in and if the beer/atmosphere is decent etc I'll start a ''Heeley Meet'' thread !!
Any ideas on dates????
:D
Anyone keen/up for it?
I'd be delighted to join you for a pint (or two!) Shiesh :)
Unless the feedback is terrible, then get that thread started! Weekends (fri/sat) after 22nd feb suit me best - but let's see what the meet thread brings.
muddycoffee 10-01-2008, 20:47 Don't I still owe you a Gunness Maggi ?
:D Anyone who's not sure whether they owe me a drink will be especially welcome (by me) at this meet!
The_Boy_Hoy 11-01-2008, 07:18 it was actually open last night, not sure if it was a private do, the front door was closed but side door was open, plenty of people in mind!
Think I'll poop in tonight and have a look, I live only round the corner, so would be nice to have a decent boozer before I reach the White Lion, Bridge and Sheaf, as the Crown is just dire.
myriadmike 11-01-2008, 13:54 Reckon I could get to the bar in less than 30 seconds from my front door, so might go for a pint tonight if its not too busy!
The_Boy_Hoy 11-01-2008, 14:53 i'll race yer.....
samstar999 11-01-2008, 15:31 We're going too - I'll be sitting there wondering what forummers I can spot!
Do you reckon it will be young-people friendly?
Wanted to go in with a group of friends before going into town tomorrow night but quite often we dont get a very warm welcome as we're young and theres lots of us lol...
happyhippy 11-01-2008, 17:15 a while back? about 3 years me reckons. No its not Ian, he never really run the sportsman, just had his bar ppl run it while he went drinking in the pubs in the area LOL
Ian? Booze elsewhere? Shurely shome mishtake :P

two, three, four or five would sound about right for me!!!! :D:hihi:
I will start a Meet thread for end of Feb once the feedback comes in !!
:)
Is the pub any good? What beer is it?
In terms of the refurb they seem to have made inefficient use of space and there isn't as much seating as some might like, also the way the back room has been split off as a seperate function room seems a bit brutal.
That said it's a nice pub and the staff seemed OK.
Choice of real ales, served colder than you normally expect, but nothing wrong with it. Choice includes John Smiths Bitter, John Smiths Magnet, Theakstons Black Bull Bitter and a couple of others, probably Tetleys and Black Sheep Bitter (can't remember).
beckelina 14-01-2008, 08:35 Went in on Saturday night and it was packed with a very mixed crowd of all ages which was good, a lively, friendly atmosphere. Can imagine on quieter times the place would look a bit cavernous, and the decor is questionable, but that's just me.
Didn't take too long to get served, and the beer was nice (Magnet and Deuchars - great) but it was very expensive - £4.90 for two pints of ale??
I won't be walking past the Sheaf and the White Lion to get there, but looks like a good place to start a night off with a group of friends.
:o £4.90 for two ales!!
You'd think they would have some opening offers on at least !!
Heeley Bottom is hardly Eccy Road!!
That's disappointing!!
:(
muddycoffee 14-01-2008, 10:17 My mate and I went down on saturday night but it was completely packed, both times we walked past. So we went to the White Lion and Crown instead.
lyndsayx 14-01-2008, 10:31 That would be ace for me if i can get a gig there can walk down the road with me guitar, all one minutes walk of it!!!
Same thing for my OH, we might have to drop in and have a nosey at the place.
myriadmike 14-01-2008, 11:01 Went in Friday night and although it was nice surroundings and the prices were pretty good (I thought anyway, pint of John Smiths, Contreu on ice and an orange juice for a fiver), I found it a bit too packed with not enough seating (just round the edges) so felt very self concious standing around with a pint, kept getting stares as well (I have a beard, deal with it) so went round the corner to the White Lion where it was quite funny to see everyone following suit, little bit too busy!
sounds good.
any music? events? sky tv?
The_Boy_Hoy 14-01-2008, 15:45 i'm in two minds, went in Friday, obviously pretty packed, took longer than expected to get served, people who came after getting served before but hay ho it was busy so fair enough. If a blind person went in they may have thought it was B&Q with the smell of paint (bring back smoking!). It does seem alot smaller, the seating is all round the edges too, didn't really go round the old pool side other than for the call of nature, just a bit bland for me really, no music on, there is a telly on the wall above the snooker table, i will wait til next month and see how it is then.
myriadmike 15-01-2008, 08:41 Yeah think I'm going to see how it pans out once its been worn in, you're right about teh paint smell, seemed a bit of a rushed opening if you ask me but hey.
muddycoffee 15-01-2008, 09:03 sounds good.
sky tv?
I bloody well hope not.
The main fault with the place before was TVs everywhere. I go to the pub to go for a chat and a pint not to be assailed by TVs everywhere.
muddycoffee 15-01-2008, 09:07 Yeah think I'm going to see how it pans out once its been worn in, you're right about teh paint smell, seemed a bit of a rushed opening if you ask me but hey.
That is an interesting thing to say.
I think that 2 and a half months for some minor building work and redecoration is not what most people would call rushed. I notice that most pubs when having a refurb, seem to be shut for either 1 or 2 weeks.

It was very run down though and had been completely closed for some time. The roof was a reet mess too.
myriadmike 15-01-2008, 15:44 Well the fact they were having furniture delivered about a day before shows they weren't quite ready, shown by several people here saying there wasn't much seating to be had this opening weekend. I'm pleased its open though, the area between the Crown and the White Lion was buzzing Friday, it can seem a bit dead at times.
just poped in to RED LION asked if kids can come in if they r havin food yes was the ans and do they have to b out by nine i asked no seven was ans we serve food 5 til 7 What y bother

Thanks for that clarification.
I would say that is not out of the way for an English pub. But at least there are several other places nearby where you can take them. New india garden was excellent when I went in December, and that is right next door.
They also have beer and other drinks for sale.
:)
Swami Dhyan 15-01-2008, 19:27 I will be popping in there tomorrow arvo to give it the once over. Telly blew up yesterday so have to buy new one. The stress of shopping will need a long look so I hope it's ok. Watch this space for report.
Thanks for that clarification.

Yes and they are the ones that run The Red Lion down in the first place it was a good pub till they took over
Went in last night, it was completely empty, and it seems unfinished. Half of the lights were not working, and it still stinks of fresh paint which is a bit off putting. £2.55 for a pint of lager, could be worse, that seems the going rate now-adays for a lager. Staff seemed ok, especially the fit blonde lass, absolutely gorgeous!!!
brianthedog 16-01-2008, 07:08 Going to give it, the White Lion and the Sheaf View a bit of a hammering on Saturday. Roll on!
Is the food any good then?

Where??? certainly not in the other pubs in the surrounding area, Heeley, Woodseats !! There all charge around £2 a pint (lager) or even cheaper!!
I think the prices will have to come down to maintain custom!
Otherwise it will just fill with pensioners who will pay the extra per pint as they make one last all night and only go in for a warm and a quiet time playing dominoes

If you're referring to premium lager I'd like to know of anywhere that charges £2 a pint. And please don't say Wetherspoons - that's not a pub/bar; just an on-license.
The Woodseats Hotel only charges £1.90 for lager and The Chantry is about the same!
I dunno about other pubs my Hubby can only remember the pubs we normally start in then after a few he doesn't seem to remember

All the pubs in Heeley charge about this for a pint of lager, with the exception of a pint of Czech lager at the Shef View, which is £2.20.
Well all the lights seem to be working now and in my opinion its far to bright, doesn't need the ceiling spotlights over the tables.Other than that was quite quiet when we were in but pleasant enough.
RandumDave 29-01-2008, 14:28 The chantry maybe a cheap pub to drink in but to be frank you need your taste buds removing to drink in there, Im a guinness drinker and in the chantry it tastes like fish an odd thing for guinness to taste of but it does, same with the woodseats hotel, foul foul beer. Id rather spend the extra money and get a decent tasting pint. Did a bit of a pub crawl round the heely area an enjoyed it. The white lion particularly was a decent pub and a a round for me an the missus was under a fiver, Bargain ^^
Also in response to prev posts about the Red lion been rushed, damn right it was, the brewery wanted the new landlord in BEFORE xmas but he refused, how they expected to pull that off i dunno cos the place was a right wreck.
Well, he didnt stay long when he did move in :-0
