View Full Version : BBC Sports personality of the year.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 11:55 I have been on the Everton web site, and they are talking about the fact that Jame MacFadden is shortlisted, because of his goals for Scotland, and that if all Evertonians and Scots voted for him he would walk it!
In fairness though most are saying that it should go to Lewis Hamilton.
This being the case maybe we should all have a few bob on Lewis Hamilton I don't know what the betting odds are though.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 12:54 I have just checked the odds
Lewis Hamilton 1/5
Ricky Hatton 4/1
Joe Calzaghe 25/1
Frankie Dettori 33/1
Jonny Wilkinson 33/1
James McFadden 40/1
Jason Robinson 40/1
Tim Henman 40/1
Amir Khan 80/1
David Beckham 80/1
Michael Owen 80/1
Wayne Rooney 100/1
I will now attempt to insert a poll for people to vote on if they wish.
Lewis should win it with hatton second, if people won the personality of the year for scoring 1 good goal for there country then why hasn't liniker or rooney won the main award then?
BasilRathbon 24-10-2007, 13:15 From your list I'd go for James McFadden, purely on the grounds that he's the only one who plays a sport that matters.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 13:25 Basil the list is direct from the bookies, I just copied down the 7 top faps with a spot for picking your own.
I know that last line is a mistake with you on the ball, no you can't pick strawberry, besides he's American.
When is the award? Depends whether it is before or after Calzaghe's fight with Kessler and how he does in it.
Guderian 24-10-2007, 15:13 If Hatton beats Mayweather, he should win it, without doubt.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 15:19 When is the award? Depends whether it is before or after Calzaghe's fight with Kessler and how he does in it.
I believe it is November 3
Sports personality awards in December.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 15:28 If Hatton beats Mayweather, he should win it, without doubt.
Hatton faces Floyd Maywether on Saturday 8 December Las Vegas.
Awards Sunday 9th December.
So time enough for Calzaghe's result to register, but will be too late for Ricky's result to have an impact?
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 15:44 i suspect you could be right there. Code 13
I think Lewis Hamilton will win it. Partly because his exploits are on terrestrial tv. Whereas, even though I pay subscriptions to Sky Sports and Setanta, I STILL have to fork out on top of that to see Ricky Hatton's fight for example. So much less people will be aware of Hatton and Calzaghe's exploits.
Whatif wewin 24-10-2007, 15:54 Code13. Hamilton is the bookies hot favourite at 1/5.
Just imagine the odds if he had won that last race and the title.
ReginaldD 24-10-2007, 16:02 I hope Lewis wins because I had a fiver on him just before the odds got really short. I think I get about £25 back, like others said though if Hatton wins I reckon he'll win. Everyone in Britain gets really hyped up when someone wins something so when the voting starts it may all be still get loads of press attention if Hatton has won.
Guderian 24-10-2007, 16:59 If Hatton batters Mayweather on the 8th, the BBC will look daft giving the award to a runner up (who bottled it)the day after........

I hope Hatton wins he. he has a championship belt and is at the very top of his sport. Hamilton bottled it in the last race. Why reward runners up
I don't know why they call it the "sports personality " award, maybe if they called it the "sports achievement" award then I could understand it more.

It's supposed to be about choosing a personality, not merely rewarding achievement.
Blame the voters for being too thick to know this.
Yet the voters voted for the personality free zone, that was Nigel Mansell. And, indeed, Steve "Interesting" Davis.

I understand what your saying, but contrary to his nickname I have always found Steve Davis interesting, witty and informative about snooker.
briggy1967 25-10-2007, 20:00 Always used to look forward and Enjoy Sports Personality of the Year until last year when they gave it to a friggin Royal for Horse Jumping!!!
She aint been heard of since and aint done much since, she won it because of who she is not what she achieved.
How they can justify giving it her instead of Joe Calzaghe or Ricky Hatton is beyond me.
Oh,and Hamilton will win it even tho he hasnt won anything and hasnt got that much of a personality
I understand what your saying, but contrary to his nickname I have always found Steve Davis interesting, witty and informative about snooker.
As a commentator, analyst or person being interviewed, very much so; but whenever he went into the arena to play, he always checked in his personality at the door.

Err ... because she won the popular vote.
Boxing's not on terrestrial television; as far as the general public is concerned, Joe Calzaghe is a pizza delivery man from Cheadle.
briggy1967 25-10-2007, 20:34 Of course Boxing is on Terrestrial T.V,Amir Khan fights are always shown on ITV sat night,or dont you class Khan as a boxer or ITV as terrestrial T.V ???
And when was the last time you saw Show Jumping on Terrestrial T.V ???
Of course Boxing is on Terrestrial T.V,Amir Khan fights are always shown on ITV sat night,or dont you class Khan as a boxer or ITV as terrestrial T.V ???
Calzaghe's changed his name to Amir Khan, has he? Or are your referring to Hatton?
And when was the last time you saw Show Jumping on Terrestrial T.V ???
Less than a month ago.
I didn't think she was a worthy winner either. The point is, nobody cares what you think. Or what I think. The winner is whoever gets the most votes. It could be Alan Partridge if enough people decided to vote for him.
briggy1967 25-10-2007, 21:09 You seriously 100% believe in telephone polls with all the crap thats beeing going on at the BBC?
Actually i believe most people voted for WHO she is not WHAT she did, seriously if any ANY other show jumper was in the running do you think she/he would win???

I think the public like an achiever, she did win the European and World event last year, what else do you need to do?
She seems very determined to win a gold medal in the Olympics just like her dad, who also has silver; although his were in team events.
Hamilton- No contest at least he has a personality.
Whatif wewin 28-10-2007, 11:43 From the poll so far, it looks like the bookies have it covered, as usual.
Does no one have their own favourite ?
I should think so aswell.
Lewis has been the best thing to happen to F1 in years, certainly this millennium.
I should think so aswell.
Lewis has been the best thing to happen to F1 in years, certainly this millennium.
But now he is getting too big for his boots saying he is going to live as a tax exile abroad. He has made it then acting a big time charlie. Give me someone down to earth like Ricky Hatton anytime
I should think so aswell.

or sinc shumacher, or fandango, or any number of amazing racing drivers.
He's good and he's made it interesting this year but he's not a legend and he's got alot of years before he can qualify to be one.
Hamilton- No contest at least he has a personality.
Yeah but I would rather give it to somebody who has proved they are best in their sport this year and Hamilton has proved he is not by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in the final race of the season. Then he moans about the people following him and hassling him for autographs saying he has had enough so wants to go and live in of all places switzerland, famous for...................................clocks and............................................... mountains and ................................ sorry cant think of owt else. Let the arrogant prig go and live there as a tax exile thats the real reason
xcatauctions 05-11-2007, 11:34 Struggling to understand why Jonny Wilkinson is even on the list.
The Pizza man should get it for me. He HAS just taken another 2 world titles from a pretty decent champion - although I do agree that this weight division is a little short on world class fighters right now.
Rotherhamer 05-11-2007, 20:44 As predicted in the Calzaghe thread. This will go to a loser in a sport sic where the only thing that makes a winner is who can build the fastest machine
Whatif wewin 06-11-2007, 10:19 double post by mistake.
Whatif wewin 06-11-2007, 10:23 As predicted in the Calzaghe thread. This will go to a loser in a sport sic where the only thing that makes a winner is who can build the fastest machine
I believe that Calzaghe really has a fighting chance, especially after his wonderful performance last week.
Ricky Hatton's fight is to take place the night before the awards so all he can do is perform well and he will get many of his fans voting for him.
The vote is on the night, from viewers, so no problems there then:rolleyes:
skipskap 12-11-2007, 16:54 Whoever wins they will not be in the studio to collect the prize. Hatton is in Vegas fighting, and both Hamilton and Calzaghe are going to watch. Rumour has it that the BBC are sending replicas of the three trophies over to Vegas to be presented by video link.

How can you know who will win, it could be someone entirely different ?
Rumour has it that all the Scots will be voting for Scot Carson for some unknown reason.
I suspect Lewis will win it, although in my opinion he wouldn't deserve it.
Problem is.... I'm struggling to think of someone who does....? Maybe we should give it to whomever it was in the FA who signed the form to sack Steve Maclaren from the England job ;)
Rotherhamer 26-11-2007, 16:46 well if Lewis is the favourite,a loser,we might as well throw another loser into the mix, stand up and be counted Mr Steve McLaren,if its on public votes dont forget there are a lot of Croations living over here
musicinmotio 26-11-2007, 17:18 i would have thought that james toseland would be up there with a chance,he might just get it.
if anyone wants to see him ,he is turning the xmas lights on at 5pm on the 1st dec at kiveton park seeing as he is a local lad and still has his roots in the village think he,s at his mums for xmas
Whatif wewin 27-11-2007, 11:14 Unfortunately James Toseland does not get a mention because not many people follow this sport.
Whatif wewin 04-12-2007, 11:36 There is only 5 days left for the phone poll, only 4 days till Ricky's fight I am trying to reignite interest in a forum poll on what our general concensus is, before I place a bet.
not wanted 04-12-2007, 11:50 If Hatton wins on Sunday morning he deserves it. If he doesn't then I would go for Calzaghe
ReginaldD 09-12-2007, 23:50 I had my money on Hamilton but if anyone else was going to win I'd wanted it to be Clazaghe.
I bet the bookies loved it, I put a fiver on it and thought it was buying money, though I'm sure many others put much more on Lewis.
Tanya T 1 10-12-2007, 09:45 I am glad Joe Calzaghe won last night and also that Ricky Hatton got 3rd place!
I am glad Joe Calzaghe won last night and also that Ricky Hatton got 3rd place!
Me too - Joe's fights tend to be on terrestial tv so the masses can watch them; he's a true winner; and he seems like a good guy with it. I wou;d've liked to have seen James Toseland get 2nd though, for the same reasons, and i think the british cycling team deserved the team award - again - winners.
Rotherhamer 10-12-2007, 10:50 Justice has been done, finally Joe gets the recognition he deserves
sharpend 10-12-2007, 12:25 i think the british cycling team deserved the team award - again - winners.
In this country we seem to prefer heroic failures over people that actually win...
England Rugby Union Team - Didn't actually win anything but beat a team that did...

Yeah, i know what you mean. Even accepting that it's a sports 'personality' ceremony, i still can't understand why the cycling team didn't get it (if 'personality' applies to the team award).
I didn't watch the show and frankly, don't know what cycling team won what. Even if you go to "other sports" on the BBC website there is no mention of cycling. Perhaps there should be but the fact is that the RU team featured a lot more in the public consciousness than the cycling team.
Tanya T 1 10-12-2007, 14:45 Was Ricky Hatton a little drunken last night, he seemed to be?
sharpend 10-12-2007, 15:14 Perhaps there should be but the fact is that the RU team featured a lot more in the public consciousness than the cycling team.
ummm.... but didn't win.... - which I would have thought was a bit of a requirement for "team of the year" whatever sport..
Not necessarily, because it is, presumably the BRITISH team of the year, so a side could still lose to a non-British team but have produced the best British team performance of the year.
yea, but ultimately the england rugby team won the same as the scottish, welsh and irish rugby teams...i appreciate that it was a great effort, but they're hardly all household names
sharpend 11-12-2007, 10:57 yea, but ultimately the england rugby team won the same as the scottish, welsh and irish rugby teams...i appreciate that it was a great effort, but they're hardly all household names
Agreed. Great effort, BUT the purpose of elite sport (whatever the sport) is to WIN. Not come second or third or no where.
I am sure the Aussie team won't be getting an award for a "good performance" against England.
Whatif wewin 11-12-2007, 15:46 Was Ricky Hatton a little drunken last night, he seemed to be?
Do you mean before or after the fight?
If you mean after the fight, it is called being 'punch drunk' , any one would be after being punched around the head for ten rounds.
I think I must have been drunk, I eventually came off the fence and bet on the fight to be drawn at the odds of 22-1.
What a waste of £5, I should have known better. :(

The thread is about Sports Personality of the Year, so i mean was Ricky Hatton drunk on Sports Personality of the year? :hihi: Didnt think the fight went 10 rounds? Sure it was the 8th! :gag:
Tanya T 1 12-12-2007, 11:05 Sorry it was the 10th round
Whatif wewin 12-12-2007, 12:05 Yes Tanya on Sports Personality of the year he was probably a little 'punch drunk', he looked surprised when he never got the top award.
James Toseland came fourth and only missed out on third by about 700 votes , not bad for a sheffield lad eh?
Whatif wewin 20-12-2007, 08:40 We won a pub quiz last night, but one question I didn't get was
'Who is the only person, beside Muhamed Ali (Cassius Clay) to have won the BBC overseas personality of the year award'.
Does any one know the answer, with out looking it up ?
I was surprized.
